EAST ASIA BUSINESS HOTEL - Tianjin

Despite being renovated and modernized, The Astor has a really nice atmosphere. The Tea Lounge is especially nice, though a bit pricey. The breakfast buffet is the most diverse I have seen with Indian, Japanese, Western, and Chinese menu items. They even had some sushi! The room is also super comfy. Nice bed, and the T.V. in front of the bath tub was a fun novelty. The only draw back of this hotel is that they don't really have a full size pool. Instead they have 2 Jacuzzi tubs and then two longer resistance type pools that jet out water to swim against. It is an ok substitute, but not really a full pool. Otherwise, everything about the hotel is great and a nice break from modern block hotels.

The Ocean has a few shortcomings. The laundry service was has been inoperative for some time as they presumably renovaye it, and the building shows some signs of age, but the rooms are clean, room service is good and available 24-hours, and the staff includes a couple of English speaking clerks who are helpful. The hotel is on the river and many rooms have a river view. It is within walking distance of "The Old Italian Village" which is picturesque, authentic (i.e., the buildings date to the time when this was an Italian Concession), and atmospheric. It is full of touring people which can be distracting, but the restaurants are a good switch if you want some European food, and the Bavarian Beer Hall serves German beer, as do most of the restaurants. I think given the reasonable prices, this is a good hotel for the traveller who is looking for a reasonaby priced lodging.

Good service

Hotel is centally located. Freeway bus to downtown is one block away. Staff is curteous and speak good English. Hotel offers one of the best breakfast buffets. Restaurant in second floor offers variety of good Cantonese & Mandarin dishes for lunch and dinner. (Menu is illustrated with photo. It took us 25 minutes to review). 4 star restaurant, 2 star price. Hotel rate is unbelivably low. We stayed at Tianjin after the Princess cruise. You may be able to return to the U. S. from Tianjin, not necessarily from Beijing. Ex. there are flights from Tianjin to ICN (Seoul, Korea)
