"Maintenance Required in the Room"
First, the drapes in our room facing the street didn't work. The outer drapes were controlled controlled by a motor, but the motor was burnt. Inner drapes were manually controlled, but didn't close all the way so they gave us safety pins to keep lights/noise out. Secondly, the shower lever in the bathroom tub couldn't be pulled all the way, so we had […] low pressure from the shower head while rest of the water was coming out of the faucet. The sink drain in the bedroom was also clogged..... Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Central to SLO"
Came to visit my sister at Cal Poly SLO and the hotel was right next to campus. Very convenient making multiple runs to and from campus. Quiet, no hwy noise. The only thing was a noisy refrigerator. So tired from hiking the entire time, that i didnt hear it the 2nd night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Not used to so pleasant an experience.."
To the many who, like me, have experienced such woeful Inn's, through the years, this Inn was a refreshing example of the good in this world. From the perspective of an old man whose life lessons have taught him to part from his hard earned shekels with the reluctance of knowing they are irreplaceable and, in retirement, fast dwindling, I was fortunate […] to have tried Hotels.com and trusted the reviews about the Sands Inn. The Manager, Jason, took me to be an old friend. There were many courtesies extended me, not only by Jason, but, over the two days and nights of my stay, by every single member of the Sands Inn's staff; including the exceedingly pleasant lady who manages the extraordinary cleanliness and up keep of the Inns rooms. We've all had various offerings of "a free breakfast", but not like "their breakfasts". You'll see. I asked if this Inn was a "chain". The answer surprised me greatly. Not only is it not a chain, but the owner, who was away on business during my stay, shows up to work every single day. I realize that by writing such an accommodating review lessens our chance of the Sands Inn being available on dotcom sites because of people who will inevitably re-book as well as spread the news of so good a place, however, there are just so many places that a man can recommend for the safety and contentment of women and children, families and the elderly. This is such a place. Happy Trails and God’s good grace to all. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"clean, friendly, and reliable"
Overall I was really happy with my stay. My husband and I stayed with our 9 year old and he loved that he got the free, cookie at check in and that there were movies to pick from. The staff was very friendly. The room was very clean. The breakfast offered more than any other breakfast I've ever gotten for free. If you want more or something different […] you should just go out and pay for it. The TV was a bit weird with limited channels. The pool was clean and well heated so we were able to swim at night instead. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The hotel is easy to get too close to 101 and downtown, the service is way above 5 stars and the breakfast was an awesome way to start the day fresh you make waffles eggs and sausage with great coffee.Rooms are spacious and clean alitte outdated but great none the less and free DVD rental overall this is my choice when I return.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Hotel close to downtown and Cal Poly"
Very nice staff!! always available and serviced minded.Genuine Expedia guest review
Very nice place to stay. Good breakfast choices, hot and cold offerings and juices. Hot tub was great and pool is heated. Only negative item is noises. We could hear people taking outside and there was a vey irritating humming sound that kept us awake. It sounded like an electrical type hum. This would not necessarily impact rooms in another location. […] The staff was very efficient, friendly and answered whatever questions we had Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Almost retro, but not on purpose."
The Sands is on hotel row in San Luis Obispo, surrounded by older and newer places. You could probably do better than this hotel. We got the room in the worst place, something that happens too frequently with reserving through Expedia. Turns out, it was very quiet in Siberia, as long as you were up before the hotel laundry started directly below. Furnishings […] were nice once, but well worn now. The pool wasn't heated and the deck around it was crumbling. A bit shoddy for the price. Breakfast was nice, thoughtfully presented, and featured more things than the usual place. Response by Sands Inn & Suites Hello Carl, Thank you for the feedback. We appreciate your candor and will use your observations to improve. You mentioned that you felt your room was in an undesirable location due it to being reserved through Expedia. I want you to know that we do not treat reservations made through sites like Expedia any differently than those booked directly. I am sorry that the sound from our laundry room was disturbing. We are happy to offer alternate rooms if the one presented is found to be unsatisfactory for any reason. If no suitable room can be found, we will refund your money and do everything we can to help you find comfortable accommodations. Something to keep in mind if you ever pass through our hotel again, which we hope you do. Thank you again for the review, Matthew F. Wilkins General Manager Sands Inn & Suites
Our room was clean and comfortable, if a bit small. The shower had an issue with the valve that diverts water up to the shower head. You had to pull up on it really hard, and the bath spout was very loose from people doing that. When I alerted the person at the front desk about this, she sounded sincerely concerned and said she'd send a maintenance […] person to investigate. The breakfast was pretty good, with things like eggs, sausage, cereals, breads and waffle makers. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A reasonably priced good place to stay in SLO"
We picked a suite for this stay and it was comfortable and relatively large. The bedroom could be closed off from the living room with the bath in between. The hotel appears to be dog friendly, having seen a number going in and out of some rooms. They have a pretty nice spread for breakfast-- make your own waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, OJ, […] cereals, coffee, tea, fruit, etc. We had two relatively minor problems -- the antenna cable in the bedroom TV was broken and one of the motors to open the bedroom draperies was not working -- a bit of an issue since they covered the 20 foot tall windows. Not really spending much time in the room during the day, this did not detract from the visit. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
This is definitely an older hotel, but reasonably well maintained. My major complaint was that the beds were some of the most uncomfortable that I have ever slept in. I suppose if you brought some memory foam, you might get an ok nights sleep, but otherwise don't count on it. The breakfast was pretty decent. Scrambled eggs, microwaved sausage patties, […] some basic pastries, and the waffle makers. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We showed up close to midnight for check in and they checked us in no problem and filled up our water for us. The rooms were clean, had a nice fridge and microwave. They had a great continental breakfast in the morning. Overall a great place with really friendly staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Overnight Stay is Okay"
Hotel is about 30-40 years old, but is in decent condition. Noticed some minor maintenance issues that needed attention, with the most annoying being that only one outlet was accessible for easy use by guests. That outlet was a single outlet in the bathroom area intended for use with the in room dryer. Unfortunately that outlet was so loose that our […] iPhone, Samsung, and Toshiba power cords would all fall out to the floor. I found another plug behind/under the desk and unplugged a lamp and the microwave so we could charge our electronics. The rooms and common use areas have furniture, décor, and fixtures that are dated, but in decent condition. Hotel could achieve higher rating with a remodel of the rooms and continental breakfast area (both of which seem to be a little cluttered with some unnecessary furniture and displays). The complimentary breakfast area was clean and well stocked when I ate at around 9:30 (half hour before ending). Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Clean, servicable hotel close to town"
Needed to book a room in town because the significant other had a show at SLO Brew. Just really needed a place to crash, but places in town can be pricey! The Sands met our needs perfectly; a little dated but clean and spacious. The bathroom looked newly remodeled and was immaculate. The room had a microwave and a fridge, nice touches although we didn't […] use them. The sink was outside the bathroom, which I like since I can apply make up while the boy showers. All in all, it felt safe and clean, which is what we wanted. Upon check in, the hotel clerk, Chris offered us fresh baked cookies and a map of downtown. Very sweet! Since it is a motor hotel (where you park your car outside your room), there was a little bit of noise in the morning as the early risers packed up and left, but that is to be expected. Overall, I would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
This motel is an excellent deal for the price. The Norris family creates a welcoming environment and they only hire the nicest people – even the knucklehead working the desk at 11pm! A full breakfast and extremely clean conditions are also nice. The chain Motels on this side of town are good too but they will want a few more bucks. Trust me, this is […] the best deal on Monterrey. Full disclosure: I love almost every square inch of SLO so maybe I tend to be in a great mood when I am there! "Excellent hotel for the price point"
Arrived late and had no problems checking in around 1130pm. Room was clean, smelled fresh and quiet. The complimentary breakfast was amazing. Eggs, sausage, fruit, yogurt, granola, cereal and you could make your own fresh waffles. If I had yawnyaelf and two daughters out to breakfast the extra expense would have been at least $30 so consider that into […] your price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"One night stay no frills needed"
Sands is simple and clean and the place to stay if you just need a bed and shower. King mattress was firm, comfy and nicely made. The room had a lot of floor space and counter/table top space. Drawers opened easily. Shower head was high and strong. Refrig was a good size. Noticed the Thomasville furnishings in our room behind the pool. Free breakfast […] and parking makes us even more happy. Good TV reception and free limited variety DVDs at front desk. Nicely located close to 101 access and Cal Poly entrance. "Decent place, great location"
No frills, but worth the price. The bed was a little firm, but ok. The bathroom was tiny, but clean. The breakfast was free, but lackluster (compared to other hotel breakfasts). We were looking for an affordable hotel that was close to campus and downtown, and this met our expectations. Fine for short stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Convenient and comfortable stay in SLO"

"This place deserves a higher rating"
I was hesitant about staying at the Sands because of the very mixed reviews. The Sands deserves a higher rating, I think. I arrived about 8 pm and was warmly welcomed by the resident manager. I was given keys to a room in the single story section, at the rear of the property (no stairs AND no one above me; I could park immediately outside.) My room […] was meticulously cleaned. The bed looked fresh, with white coverings in lieu of what had looked like very dated and tired bedspreads shown in the photos. It was EXTREMELY comfortable. The A/C/heat controls worked perfectly and made the room temp exactly as I wanted it. I believe the curtains had been recently replaced, but clearly with an eye to budget and NOT decor. Oh dear: marbleized-effect sky blue and white plasticized fabric, which does not match ANYTHING else in the room. In any way. It DOES very effectively black out the light from the windows in the morning. The breakfast room, right off the lobby, was very attractive, and offers the now fairly standard but generous free breakfast fare, including waffle machine, toast, eggs, sausage, cereal, coffee, milk, but only orange juice, labeled glass containers with servings of vanilla yoghurt (so you can't take it with you?) and no fresh fruit. All in all, I was favorably impressed with the Sands. It was as nice or nicer than I expected. It does look like a renovated, more upscale motel, but it was very comfortable in every way, and I felt safe there. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice Motel - but walls are paper thin."
Nice and easy motel within walking distance to Cal Poly. Nice pet policy too. But walls are paper thin so you can hear everything.Genuine Expedia guest review
Good Value. Nice single story section with nice bedroom and comfortable bed. Bathroom a little small but OK. Well maintained. Good breakfast and eating room. Patio dining was unusual and pleasantly quiet. I'd stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Don't understand how customers can rate this place so high-at the most a 2 1/2-3 for me.Separate single story (room 149) building from two story (maybe) nicer units .Dated, mold in smallish shower stall, noisy fridge-needs total upgrade to get to a 4+ rating-but a very nice staff.Breakfast good.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great value and pleasant setting."
Comfortable room, pleasant and helpful staff. Room was nicely appointed. Bathroom was nice but older. Great breakfast and an ideal location in San Luis. Catch the trolley in front of motel and head to the Farmers Market on Thursday evenings! Walk to Cal Poly - if you like to walk. It's about 1/2 mile from the motel.Genuine Expedia guest review
Booked this hotel for Labor Day weekend so not much inventory since it was a last minute booking but this had really good reviews and cost a little more but worth it. The hotel had a great free full breakfast and also the rooms had a mini fridge and microwave.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Comfortable hotel near CalPoly"
Great hotel for the price! Located close to the campus, which was really helpful. The staff was really friendly and helpful. Good breakfast! Just slightly bummed that the hot tub wasn't hot the first night I stayed there, the pool was perfect though!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice but a little pricey"
This hotel is fine and the staff was friendly, but the price seemed a little high for an older hotel such as this. What killed us was a $38 special fee that perhaps the city of San Luis tacks on? Not sure.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Dog Friendly Plus a Treat!"
It was dog friendly so that was a huge plus. Wish we had known they were going to reseal the parking lot while we were there. We would have stayed somewhere else. But otherwise we had a great room. Pretty clean minus a few dust bunnies on the bed spread. So we just pulled that off. The breakfast was delicious. My son loved the waffles and so did I. "The place to stay "if you have to""
