Grand Midwest Express - Discovery Garden - Dubai

This was supposed to be a four-star hotel. Giving it two stars is being generous. It took over 40 minutes to check in because they couldn't find the reservations for the two separate guests checking in before us. The lady handling the front counter was rude to the gentleman in front of us and wouldn't even respond when he would ask questions. She completely […] ignored him. The other gentleman was just as irritated and wished us luck while we tried to check in. Checking out was just as bad. They have the worst customer service. Good luck using the telephone to call the front desk, operator, or customer service. No one would answer the calls. If you pushed the speed-dial buttons for the front desk or customer service you would end up reaching Room 107 which was occupied by a guest which irritated them. The room was dated and hallways smelled of garbage. The first day they made up the room but didn't replace the towels. The second day they didn't even make up the room until we returned that evening and requested them to at least provide us with towels. On a positive note the hotel is located close to Ibn Battuta Mall and a short taxi ride will take you to the new metro. Also, the spa located downstairs gives excellent 30-minute foot and leg massages which were nice after being out and about all day. I would recommend you pay more and stay somewhere else closer to the heart of the city. Read more

This hotel is OK for short stays but take note that the location is probably not as advertised. I would say that it is accessible but definitely not close to Ibn Battuta or Dubai Marina... but then again it all depends on your perspective. It's a 5 - 10 minute walk to Ibn Battuta (and another 5 - 10 minute walk to the Metro station) and believe me under […] the sweltering heat of Dubai that would seem like 30 minutes. There's a bus service but the route going to the said mall goes around Discovery Gardens costing about 20 minutes of your time, more if a traffic jam occurs in that peculiar intersection towards the mall. It's all up to you whether to take a painfully shorter walk, a taxi, or a longer but more comfy ride in the bus. Dubai Marina is actually several Metro stations away, and the city centre (Bur Dubai, Deira, Karama area) is about an hour away from Ibn Battuta station so make sure you factor that in your schedule. There was a cockroach in my room and during the night I heard what I can only think of as rats scurrying inside the ventilation ducts. The kitchen and washing machine might be great for extended stays but the TV channels were mostly not in english so no help there. But unfortunately in both of the rooms the bedsheets and bed covers were looking as if they were not washed, we felt very bad about that. The hotel's policy states that cancellation is acceptable if done a day before your stay with only one day being charged and Expedia policy states that you would be fully responsible for your entire stay, but you don't get that information until after you receive an itenierary. As far as I am concerned, I've had a good experience with the exception of the reception desk. Receptionists do not have the initiative to be helpful nor they are welcoming. Overall, good experience. I'm staying here again this November for a longer period of time. I just hope they could give at least 1 night free for every 5-night stay.

I requested for early check in however, when I arrived in the hotel the receptionist was adamant to charge me for few hours until the check in time. Could not care less if I travelled 7.5 hours but insisted for me to pay. So I left and went to my sister's flat instead to rest. This hotel is rated 4 star but it is badly managed. One day I left the sign to clean the room and I came back the sign was turned back showing "Do not disturb" hence my room was again not cleaned. The fridge was not working and I called the technician to fix and he turned up bare handed and took my personal adaptor for my computer to replace the faulty adaptor for the fridge! Once we were told by the housekeeper that he was all alone on duty in the evening to clean up the whole building and so annoyed why we asked for a clean towel! I would rate this apartment 1 star instead of what they claim as 4 star. The location is so far away from the city centre. It's good I know how to use the bus and the metro but then so time consuming as most taxis do not know where it is. Read more

Wasn't sure what to expect as I have never stayed this far out from the old Dubai, but I was impressed at the location and the local services available. Discovery Gardens has excellent (and frequent) public transport network. The nearest Metro Station is Ibn Battuta on the red line. You can either take the feeder bus from the Metro station - 10 min […] (F43), or walk it - 25 mins cutting across the Ibn Battuta Mall. You can even take a taki to/fro the Metro to the Hotel - 5 mins, 10 Dirhams. If you are using the Feeder Bus (F43) from the Metro to the Hotel, get off at the stop directly in from of the hotel (i think its the 4th stop, the one after you pass the mosque. There is only one mosque in Discovery Gardens (DG). To catch the bus from the hotel to the Metro, you will need to walk to the bus stop BEHIND the Chelsea Garden Hotel building, no more than 5 minutes at a brisk pace. If you are walking from the station to the hotel, the quickest route is to cross the bus depot and head to the nearest entrance to the Mall which is in the Persia Court (not the Geant entrance) you then need to bear left once you are inside the Mall and make your way to the India Court. As you approach the elephant statue, take a left and exit the Mall, head across the Car Park and as you face the Main Road, you should see the mosque a fair distance on your left. Head towards the mosque and the pink buildings which comprise Discovery Gardens. As you near the area, pass the mosque and cross the main road (carefully), you will see the new midnight cafe restaurant (very good btw, with free internet access) which resides on the ground floor of one of the pink buildings. Walk past it and the GMW hotel is two blocks away. Walking from the hotel to the Metro is of course, the reverse. Once you figure out the route, you will realise how easy it is.
