"Enjoy a relaxed time"
The Sunset Beach Hotel is an older hotel and if you are looking for the Ritz, this is not it. But it is realtively clean and convienent. The best is the staff. Pam the general manager went above and beyond during our stay. We requested and had both a refridgerator and internet in our room. We traveled off-season so we knew that many of the ammenities […] would not be available. But the breakfast was nice and the private beach really nice. Cape Charles is a great place to relax and not get caught up in all of the activities at VA beach. Its close enough to drive to Bush Gardens. We were able to relax and enjoy our stay. If we ever travel back to Cape Charles, which we hope to do soon, we would stay at the Sunset Beach Hotel. You really can't beat the value. And the staff is the best. "Lovely location, but need better maintenance"
Surrounding is lovely. Nice and quiet, lovely private beach and walk way... Room is not the greatest. Kind of old and a little dirty for my taste. It's between a motel and hotel cleanliness, but not the worst. For the room rate, the room should be more comfortable, think I only paid a price for the private beach access. I'd recommend this hotel for […] visitors who are not picky with room comforts and just want to rest and enjoy the beach. Good for journey rest stop though. I must add, the staff are very friendly, which is a good thing. WIFI in the rooms are bad, you have to work in the lobby area for internet service. Cell phone service in that area is bad too. Thanks! The gentleman at the front desk was so courteous and friendly at check in. He explained all policies regarding pets which made me feel good that my dogs would be staying in a safe environment and I did not have to work about flea infestation. The room was nice. There was some evidence of aging but overall it was a nice place to stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Had a Ball!"
3 of us were there for 2 nights! We used the lobby the first night to watch their TV. We had a new TV in our room the next day! We used their lobby with the round tables the next day to do a project and to play cards! The front desk worker were most helpful and kind in every way. We had a great time!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A little worn"
The hotel needs some repair. But rooms are clean and comfortable. Price in off season is good. Price in season is too much for an aging hotel. Location is good. Staff is very helpful and are local to the area. Overall a good budget motel. Nice beach restaurant in season.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Terrific Sunsets Indeed!"
While this place reminded me of your typical motel (which my husband and I prefer), the property in the back was wonderful! Large grounds for outdoor activities, areas for grilling outdoors, a long driveway lined with huge Crepe Myrtle trees that lead you to a lovely beach area/restaurant/pavillion. Complete with palmetto trees and a spectacular su […] nset! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"OK but Shows its Age"
Good functional hotel. Bed was comfortable, as was the room, but the room was indicative of a '60's era hotel in need of significant renovations. In the off-season, I would likely stay there again, but for people seeking a 3-4 star place to stay, this is not it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best of the options"
I needed a late December hotel room on the Eastern Shore and there are not many options. Room was fine, clean, most everything worked. Minor complaints would be that the coffee maker switch did not work ... plug in/unplug for on/off, and there was a soap dish in the shower that was hanging off the wall. Staff were polite and accommodating. I'd be […] comfortable staying here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Sunset Beach Resort"
Booked a trip to stay at this motel as a last minute New Year's Eve trip and was expecting a substandard motel based on some of the reviews on-line. I was pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and all of the staff were friendly. The Bed was comfortable. The motel was dated but there was evidence of some recent improvements noted. The location was […] convenient to Cape Charles and nearby state park. The continental breakfast was horrible but you get what you pay for and since it was free, I can't complain too much. I would stay there again.
Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Prima locatie, maar opfrisbeurt nodig"
Prima gelegen hotel, met strand vlakbij. Jaren 70-stijl moet aangepakt worden. Klemmende deuren, muffe lucht, oude badkamer. Van buiten goed in de verf: van binnen sleets. Slecht ontbijt met brooodjes met schimmel en buitengewoon karig. Wel aardige mensen, maar wij komen hier niet terug.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Comfortable but weird"

The rooms are perfectly clean, so it's a fine place to stay if you just need a place for the night and don't need Wifi. The wifi is only available in the lobby, and maybe in one or two rooms nearby. We were here for the thanksgiving weekend actually, because we were looking for a place away from people. It definitely fit the bill in that regard: it's literally as far south as you can go on the Delmarva peninsula, and there's nobody down here during the off-season. The lobby is in a building that once housed a restaurant and bar, but from the looks of it that has been closed for many years. In late November, the lobby building was not heated. There were space heaters scattered around, but they didn't really help. Since that's the only place to access the wifi, this was pretty annoying. The continental breakfast was extremely bare bones and not fresh or...good in general. We might come to Cape Charles again in the future, but we'll definitely choose one of the properties with higher TripAdvisor rankings.
"Manage Your Expectations and Enjoy"

Let me reiterate some of the previous things that have been said and which we experienced: the hotel and the rooms are outdated, it fronts a major road and has an RV park on site, the beach is about 150 yards long before you hit protected beachfront that is protected, the beach is 100 yards from the hotel, the rooms have a musty smell, rat traps are located throughout the property and the continental breakfast is pretty minimal. On the plus side, the room was clean, the rates are low, they allow dogs, the staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating, the beach is private and the grill is a great place to watch the sunset. We stayed for two nights and had no real complaints. Expect the Ritz and you'll be disappointed. Expect a reasonably priced hotel with minimal accommodations and you won't be. Get out and enjoy the beauty of the eastern shore and save yourself a little money in the process.
"Not fancy, but a comfortable place to stay"
09/30/14 Ross R Austin, Texas
I recently spent three nights at the Sunset Beach Inn while attending a sea kayak symposium nearby. I didn't spend a lot of time at the motel, but my room was clean, relatively large, and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The actual name of the place is the Sunset Beach Inn and Grille, but the "Grille" no longer is in operation, so you have to drive 4-5 miles up the peninsula for a cafe or restaurant. While I didn't take time to enjoy everything the Inn had to offer, it appears to have beach access and ample spaces for campers or RVs. For kayakers, there is an outfitter literally next door. There also was plenty of room to park large boats and trailers, so it should be considered a plus for folks who like to fish or otherwise sail or motor on the Bay. The breakfast was Continental, but the cafe was roomy, and I was able to fill up before each day's outing. I couldn't access their free wifi in my room (may have been a function of my phone), but I could get it in the cafe. Overall, if you're looking for comfort at a decent price, want to spend more time outside rather than in, and don't require a four or five star establishment, you won't go wrong with the Sunset Beach. I definitely would stay there again.

About 65 members of my family converged on Sunset Beach Inn for a reunion. The Sunset Grill catered the event, but what made the event a success was the oversight and attention of Betsy Rowe. The property needs a great deal of love and care and many repairs, but we found it clean and comfortable. The view of the bay is fantastic. It's a simple pleasure to go there.
"Another GREAT Weekend"
09/04/14 JACKJONES0308 Richmond, Virginia
When you want to get away for a fun, relaxing weekend at the beach. And you don't feel like spending it with 50,000 of your NOT closest friends, then Sunset Beach is where you want to come. You can't beat the price for the accomodations and you have the feeling of having an almost private beach to enjoy. There's even a small restaurant/bar right at the beach so you don't have to travel far if you need refreshments. Always a favorite for me and my friends.
"Roll the dice"

My wife, toddler, and myself along with another party stopped here for a night after 12 hours of driving before we pressed on to obx the next day. We pretty much knew what we were in for based on reputation and previous visits. Before writing this review I have concluded that the new staff cares very much about improving this hotel and is trying very hard to satisfy their customers. It looks like some people have great rooms while others have dated, dated, worn rooms in need of major overhaul. I see that with every complaint the staff says that they should have been notified or someone should have said something so it could be fixed. My response would be that anyone taking out the trash after each customer can clearly see the obvious problems that are easily fixed and may completely change a customers mood towards the fact that the room is just a cheap bed for the night. Upon walking in our room smelled like a smoking room that had been changed to a non smoking room. The loud ac control buttons were worn and needed pliers. The dead bolt screws were all loose and there was missing door knob parts between the door that led to the room next door and there was a tissue in the hole to block any possible peeping. The shower had very poor regulation. It was either cold or suddenly scalding with the slightest adjustment so there was no was we could wash our baby after a 12 car ride. The electrical plug by the door did not work therefore neither did the lamp in that corner. We didn't really move into the room but when I open the dresser drawers that were built into the tv stand the slides were junk and dropped and dragged when pulled out. Stains on the ceiling and walls were painted over. The beach was nice and the staff at the restaurant very, very nice. The food was simple cooked frozen burgers and crab cakes but not bad. The picnic tables outside where we ate were weathered and splinter hazard for our little one. The beach location was nice but cigarette buts and dog poop were barefoot hazards. The crowds at the camping area looked a bit wild which made me so little wary to leave anything in my truck over night. Here's my suggestion to the resort.. I have no issue staying in an older, dated hotel but when there are so many silly simple things that can be easily fixed, that aren't , it makes me wonder what else has been ignored like clean sheets and bedding. !! I am not saying my sheets were at all dirty, but it crossed my mind several times considering!! Curb appeal is huge, hide all those rat traps!! Good luck to you and your very friendly staff!
"Save your money and go elsewhere"

It started with a dirty lobby that smelled. We do not complain a lot but do want our monies worth when traveling. Sorry about this owners.......I think you already know what I am about to say. This should have been a sign of things come. We were there and would make the best of it. Our room keys would not work and had long walk to office to fix. Room smelled bad like musty dampness. Would have preferred smelly cigarettes to this stinky room. Interior Looked like back in time to the 80's. I would not lay on covers. Didn't know when cleaned, found dirty sock in corner of room. Drawers were dirty and found matches in one and food rapper in another. Did anyone clean this room and really look around. Not really. Bathroom was not cleaned well and hot water would not work until ran for about 6 minutes. Looks like front doors are original and have never been replaced or maintained. There are parking areas near hotel for campers and RV's. They were loud, running around in small vehicles late into the night, partying late into the night with music. They were happy in their own little world. Not concerned about those staying in hotel. Not a fun time for us. There was al total lack of caring for cleanliness and how people would see this property. The beach was dirty with smelly fish laying in sand. They were cleaned so someone threw them there or cleaned in boat and threw overboard. I will say management did their best to clean the beach when I told them about beach. We were going to stay 4 days but left after 2. The area is beautiful but this is not the place to stay. It looks as if management- ownership are trying to milk the last bit of money from this place before a major renovation is to take place. It is a shame. Such a beautiful place this could be if done property. I work in hospitality industry and owners and management should be ashamed of marketing this place like this. Go elsewhere and stay. Should not be open at this time. Serious remodel this place and I will be back. To the management. Care about what people say and what should be done. I know you just work here but have serious conversations with owners about doing this place right or just close down until renovated. I would discourage anyone from staying here at this time.
"Needs some major work"
Stayed at this hotel to be close to family for a reunion. Had I known what we were in for I would have drove farther up the road to find a place..The rooms door was falling apart at the bottom and you could see light through there. The tiolet leaked everytime you flushed it and the AC did not really cool the room. There was a place for a fridge but there was not one. Also it said free wifi but I was told I could only get it in the lobby... I would think for 300.00 for 2 nights it should have been better...I will never stay there again.Save yourself the pain and drive on up the road. SSW
"A nice place with beach access on the Eastern Shore"
08/10/14 Pat R Richmond, Virginia
We loved the private beach access and thought the beach grill was unexpectedly good! The rooms are clean and the beds are fine. The lobby looks like it is still in the 60's but I like the quirklness. They could stand to improve the breakfast and figure out how to improve the air conditioning in the dining area. It is located next to a wild life refuge, which is great and free! We enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.
This place reminded me of a dive a teenage kid would pick during spring break in PCB. $110 dollars for a musty smelling outdated room. More water came out of the spigot then the shower head and took an hour for the water to drain from the tub. Took kids to the beach and it was disgusting. Dead fish carcass everywhere. Even my 4 year old said Mommy this beach is gross and it stinks bad.
