Reviewed by Derek of San Francisco on Nov 10, 2009
The hotel is Kimpton through-and-through: classy, contemporary, comfortable. The staff is mostly very helpful and responsive, bright and courteous. Because I like to walk, I'd definitely stay there again. The neighborhood, which is the Western edge of Hells Kitchen, is remote. The hotel is situated in the middle of Manhattan's Auto Row on 11th Avenue (who knew there was one?!), and a vigorous walk is required to get most places. The most convenient landmark is the Javits Convention Center (and several gentleman's clubs, if you're into that sort of thing), so if you have an event there, this is your hotel. There's not really any restaurants super close by (a diner here and there serving the mostly working-class folks who work in the neighboring warehouses) and the hotel doesn't offer much in the way of room service, so if you get hungry, get ready to walk. The good news is, 10th Avenue is changing fast and there are some really good restaurants about a 5 - 10 minute walk away. The Central Park Hansom Cabs and their horses are stored overnight in the neighborhood, so you hear their comings and goings early in the morning and in the evening, which is nice, but walking by the stable buildings there's an unexpected odor... It's also where the major UPS and FedEx depots are, and where the taxi cab dispatchers work; there's even a taxi cab car wash (if you're into that sort of thing...) But, it's just one block from the Westside Highway with it's terrific running and bike path, so that's a plus. And if, like me, you love to walk, all the major Broadway Theaters are up 47th Street. And the A-B-C subway line is on 8th Ave, which isn't too bad a walk.

Spotty service; questionable cleanliness; noisy room, uncomfortable bed, horrible continental breakfast (restaurant was under construction so food was brought in from elsewhere). Clearly this is a trial run period but they have a way to go before they are ready for "prime time." Front desk had a difficult time answering the most basic of my questions. Positives were: friendly elevator attendant (not sure that service will be there once they're fully operational), decent wines offered during wine reception, small but adequate workout room, great salad offered for cold room service although it set me back $36. I've stayed at a number of Kimpton properties; this one fell way below my expectations. Will not stay there again

I wanted to try this hotel as I'm fairly sure the prices will rise once the entire facility is open. I checked in very late on a business trip and was given a handicapped accessible room on the third floor - the room/condition was excellent. After I figured out the light switches, HVAC, and shower controls, only then did I realize I could hear a fairly constant drill/power tool - this was Wed. night around midnight. I was too tired to call the front desk to move rooms, so I just cranked up the fan on the HVAC control. If you get a good price (and you don't need easy access to the subway or midtwon for business) grab this reservation! But if you can't check in early, try to make sure to check out the room for noise prior to accepting it. Once the work is done this won't be an issue, and this will be a great weekender hotel, but then these great prices may not last either.

Hotel was clean, and the rooms were actually big. I've stayed all over NYC for business and pleasure, and I will say that the room that I stayed in was by far the largest I've been in in NYC. The hotel was clean, staff was friendly, and the rooms were comfortable. The only negatives were that the hotel had a tiny lobby, which got quite crowded during check-out, and the hotel was located in an area where not a whole lot is going on. I think it's a very good place to stay, has good bang for your buck, and if you value space, this is a hotel worth considering.

We got a great rate during the opening weeks of Ink48. We've stayed there twice, we liked it so much. The location was perfect for us, the staff was professional & personable, and the low-rise surrounding buildings gave us a lovely view of the city & river. While the rooftop restaurant and bar were still under construction & not open, our rooms were bright and comfortable with high ceilings and windows that open. The glass bathroom doors were elegant but weren't exactly soundproof, but that was the only complaint we could make. We highly recommend this lovely hotel.

The only things I did not like about the hotel were the thin windows. Our neighbors had their window cracked and we could hear their conversation as if they were in the same room as us. Bar, restaurant, spa, roof deck, etc all NOT OPEN. There were also some maintenance issues in my room (toilet ran all night and didn't flush right; one of the sink drains didn't work) that could be expected with a new hotel. The service was good, but unfortunately I had to wait 15 - 20 minutes at 8 PM to be able to get into my room. The said they were fixing a light, but it was clear they forgot to clean it and had to send someone up to do it when I checked in. oops. Still, the room and bathroom were huge and it was very upscale, comfortable. I would stay again.

I stayed at Ink48 on two seperate trips and both were fantastic. My first trip, I was in one of their smallest rooms, on one of their lowest floors, right on 11th avenue (close to traffic nosie). Believe it or not, I didn't notice! The room was still huge for NYC standards, there was still a great view of the city out of my ENORMOUS window, and the noise was barely noticeable (and I am a light sleeper so that's saying a lot!) My second stay with them was even better- I splurged on one of their Hudson View Suites because they were offering such an amazing deal- it was one of the nicest/cleanest/biggest rooms I have ever stayed in! The bathroom itself needs to be noted- there was a shower AND a separate bathtub. I am not a big girl but at 5'5" I am not tiny and when I sat in the tub, the edge almost came up to my chin. So romantic couples take note: definitely big enough for 2! The only con about this place (and its not really bad in my opinion) is that people who are not very familiar with the city might find this hotel a little too out of the way. Its not hard to find a taxi on 11th ave but sometimes you do have to wait a bit and the location is not that close to any touristy things (for NYC standards...). However, if you do know NYC and how to get around then the location isnt bad at all!

Though within Manhattan, and walking distance to Times Square, the hotel feels like it's in some far off forgotten borough of the city until you open the window of your room and see midtown an arm's reach away. Once you know where you are, it's actually nice to retreat the few blocks off the beaten path to find this chic, clean, top end hotel as your refuge from the mighty NYC. It will, within a short time, become one of NYC destination hotels for the fashion, art, and media crowd, who will happily brave the surrounding gas stations and car dealerships to hang out on what will become a little known but very trendy rooftop bar. This is only my humble guess, but I've spent a few hundred nights in NYC hotels over the years, and Ink48 has all the makings of "cool".
