Life is a never-ending summer in LA’s Beach Cities. Redondo Beach and surfing are forever intertwined. On weekends, many Angelinos head to Santa Monica to relax in the ocean and hang out at the Third Street Promenade. The Getty Center, an art-world powerhouse, is nestled in the nearby hills north of Brentwood. Santa Monica’s neighbor, Malibu, is home to The Getty Villa and its antiquities.

It was quiet when i stayed there in late November. The pretty young things had packed up their thongs and margaritas, and the poolside was bare. I could see the pleasant lights of the ferris wheel spinning multicolored tapistries against the night sky. The valet parker could not have been more solicitious, so I gave him a five spot. Nice place to stay.

As an LA Native, I've driven by the Hotel Shangri La several times, and always wondered about the rooms, lay out, prices etc. The opportunity to experience all of the above presented itself when I had an out of town guest come in for the weekend, and I thought it would be a nice treat to stay closer to the beach, and walking distance from some great restaurants, 3rd St, bars, the pier. We stayed on the top floor, overlooking Ocean and the beach. Gorgeous room, gorgeous view. The best amenities. I didn't want to leave the room!

my granddaughter and i loved the hotel. it is a primarily adult oriented hotel but children are certainly welcome. the concierge was fabulous and when i told her the rediculous itinerary i had worked out she gently guided us to something more doable and enjoyable. we had massages in our room and i can't tell you how wonderful that was. the staff was all pleasant. we sat by the pool and enjoyed the sun and a great hamburger. loved breakfast in the restaurant with open windows looking across to the park and the pacific. i would definitely return alone, with friends, with my grandchildren. thank you so much for a great stay.

I loved the Hotel Shangri La Santa Monica. The staff is very friendly and will accomodate any special need you have (and we had a few strange ones. My friend and I got tattoos on Venice Beach, and later that night needed saran wrap and tape. We called the front desk and, within minutes, no questions asked, a bell boy was standing at our door with a big box of saran wrap and tape!). The pool is nice, although it gets a little crowded on the weekend, and finding a chair near the pool can be a challenge. The hotel is minutes from Santa Monica Pier (you can see the Pier from the hotel), and right across the street form the beach. The only thing I wish I had known before booking this hotel is that its pool bar plays very loud DJ music until about midnight every night. If you need to get to bed early, forget it. The sound of the music and the voices by the pool carries up into your room as if the party was right in your bathroom. Other than that, everything was great about this hotel.

Reviewed by Scott of West Hollywood on Jul 7, 2009
My wife and I stayed at this hotel on our wedding night. When we arrived the front desk staff was very friendly and we were checked in promptly. The lobby was beautifully decorated and the recent renovations were very nice (though we've never seen the hotel before). Our one-bedroom suite was very clean, comfortable, and ready for our arrival. I was, however, expecting a better ocean view. The desk clerk said our room had an ocean view but we were on the side of the building so you had to look out the window at an angle to see part of the ocean. Most of our view was just the building across the street. The bedroom itself was very comfortable and the bed was one of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept on (we wished we could take it home with us). The only major problem was the bathroom. Although clean, there was a slight leak in the shower head fixture which caused water to drip onto the floor and flooded the bathroom a little bit. Also, the design of the bathrooms does not include a shower curtain or door and so even in the absence of a plumbing issue water is sure to splash all over the place and get anything in the vicinity wet. I know they're going for an ultra-modern feel but a stylish glass door (or shield) would be a good addition. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the location and would give it another chance.

I loved the hotel shangri la. The only problem was that construction was still a factor and the staff has not gotten acquainted to existing as a Four star experience. Everything we requested from advil to an ironing board was either unavailable or slow to arrive. Besides that, which wasn't a major impedance, the hotel was gorgeous, the room exceeded expectation, and the week was a fun one

Reviewed by Michele of Mill Valley on Jan 27, 2009
The hotel is under construction which starts every morning around 8:00. The hallways are littered with construction debris. The room is extra ordinarily small. The bathroom only has a tube and when you use the shower head it sprays the sink and floor. There is no bar in the bath tub so that is VERY dangerous and against the law. There was no iron, ironing board or hair dryer. This definately is NOT a 5 star hotel but more of a 3 or less star. Even though it is under renovation all their decision in the room are wrong. The room is too narrow, the bathroom is glass with smoked glass on the bottom. So when you are on the toilet no one sees you but as soon as you stand up you are visible even though the door is shut. I tried to slid open the outdoor window and the knob even fell off. The staff is still being trained and although I am sure they may be trying they are not achieving. We asked for our car a half an hour before we came downstairs. And because there were three rental cars like ours and they hadn't makred them properly there was mass confusion. Enough said! I hated the place.
