"Excellent "independent" stay, Thank you!"
Very comfortable room with nice decor. The common areas could use some serious updating. Excellent location.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Our clock radio, TV remote and telephone were not working at some point during our stay. The telephone needed to be replaced. Though when we complaint the staff was sympathetic. Our room was very noisy. The walls were paper thin. The breakfast was absolutely pathetic. An old piece of fruit, a container of Dannon yogurt, granola bar and a carton of juice. "great boutique hotel - wonderful location"
Staff were lovely; accommodating, helpful and friendly. We liked everything about this hotel: the location cant be beat! Free wine and cheese in the evening, yoghourt and cereal brought to your room in the morning and good coffee round the clock. My only complaint-- I couldnt get the wi-fi to work. Not critical-- there is a free use computer in the […] lobby. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient and Classy"
We enjoyed the attentive service and the complimentary wine and cheese on arrival. We were there on a Tuesday night and found the neighborhood to be oddly noisy in the wee hours of the morning. We could hear the sounds of revelry on the street way up in our fifth floor room. However the hotel itself was outstanding.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I was a little worried at the first time to book this hotel due to others' comments. However, i should not have worried about it! The hotel was so great and room was so clean and lovely. Staff were kind but I had to wait him to show up when I wanted to check in at night. That was the thing but other than that, so great! I would go there again if I go […] to philly. "Philly in a day"
Fabulous staff, very helpful and accommodating. Good location, good price, free internet!!! My only problem was the outside noise. There is a parking lot directly across from the hotel that a lot of people congregated at very late at night and were very loud. Could not sleep until they decided to go home.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Recommend with some minor reservations"
Service was very good. I didn't appreciate seeing "work space area" doors open with untidy work environment. Bedroom was rather small, but shower was spacious by comparison and efficient. There was considerable street noise that was tough to ignore.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Quaint Gem convenient to history"
This is a really nice hotel. The rooms are airy and comfortable with modern features like flat panel TVs hooked to DirecTV, with a refrigerator, microwave and Keurig coffee maker. The bathrooms are well lit. The stall showers are great. The staff is very helpful and the location is terrific. There are dozens of bars, restaurants and shops within a few […] blocks in all directions. Less than a mile from Independence Park and right at a train stop. "Quiet and Romantic"
The Independent is a great hotel for couples looking for a quiet and romantic getaway. Our room was big, beautiful and uniquely furnished and decorated. Although simple, the breakfast delivered to our door in the morning was most welcome, as was the in-room Keurig coffee machine (I wish they would have provided a few more K-cups though). Door to room was ridiculous to open and close...full strength to shut, and had to use your foot/leg to open...loved the double head shower...and how the bathroom didn't get hot when you showered...very comfortable...hotel staff at the desk were nice, but needed to warm-up to you...the amenities in the "lobby" area were awesome...loved the free frui […] t!!! interesting take on hotel. The building is old, but inside the decour is contemporary which as a suprise to us. Parking is a disaster, but it was as expected when being downtown. We enjoyed our stay, even though the room was spotless, and we found the coffee filter holder in the sink with water running on it ( who knows for how long). the harwood floors […] int he room were a nice touch and the bathroom was pretty nice, but other details were not up to the same grade. I.e. cable box barely balanced on the dresser right underneath a nice lcd tv. Overall it was a nice hotel and the staff was attentive, we only stayed for a fewhours as we got in to town very late, which may or may not have contributed to our take on the hotel. That being said, the Hotel is better than a chain hotel and is very reasonably priced for the location both of which are large plusses in our book. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The glass on the windows was glazed and that made it dark. I like well lit rooms, especially those that have windows. Other than that it was a very nice hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Relaxing, Classy and Free Wine and Cheese"
The only reason I gave this hotel a 4 over a 5 overall is because the insulation by the door is pretty limited so during busy times when people are coming and going from their rooms you hear their voices, door slams and footsteps. OTHERWISE I love this hotel and will put it as the number one hotel I will stay at when visiting Philadelphia (which I do […] once a year). Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"This hotel is ideal."
This may be the best hotel I have ever stayed in the USA. Friendly, convenient, service oriented, gratuities that would make Hyatt cringe. I plan on going back to Philly just to stay here again. Regrefully we had to transfer to the Hyatt on Penn's Landing. We wished we could have stayed at the Independent.Genuine Expedia guest review
The room was spacious and comfortable, and the shower head (double, Speakman) was AWESOME. Nice to have a simple breakfast included in the price. Also nice to have complimentary wine in the evening. I'll definitely stay here again if I'm back in Philly.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Service and staff were very friendly, accessible, and helpful. Amenities were good. Location was excellent. We found parking on the street, but yet could walk to Rittenhouse or Washington Square areas. Hotel was handsome, Room comfortable, with cushy pillow and down comfortor.... and clean. Large bathroom with strong shower and full length mirror.......Very […] good value for price. Street noise (mostly from neighborhood bars) was sometimes intrusive on Friday night as we were on a low floor....but not long lasting, just passers-by.. We plan to stay there again mostly due to the ease of the location, the congenial service, and comfort of the room. It was a very good price/value/comfort relationship. Check-in was easy and fast by a courteous and helpful front desk. The room was large, clean and very homey. The neighborhood is right in the middle of everything. We never had to take a taxi and there wer restaurants and nightlife all around us. Can't wait to go back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Place to Stay."
This hotel is great. I don't think I've ever stayed at a small, "boutique" hotel like this before - it was fabulous. More like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. "Great location, great room"
The Independent is a lovely boutique hotel in Midtown Village. My room on the second (lobby) floor was enormous, with a king-sized bed, very high ceiling, large windows, and a large bathroom. The staff was very helpful with ideas for places to go and things to do. The lobby is small but nice, with a fireplace, drinks, sofas, and more. The location is […] fantastic, within a short walk of just about all downtown Philly sights and near great restaurants and shops. It's in a busy urban neighborhood, so on weekend nights there is street noise from people and cars, but that's to be expected. The free breakfast delivered to your room is a good idea, but the offerings didn't really appeal to me. Access to a very large gym two blocks away is included. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Great little hotel in a great central location location. Clean and very nicely decorated. They bring breakfast to your room in the morning as part of their normal service. The staff was helpful about restaurant choices, they were friendly and available. We enjoyed the wine and cheese happy hour the hotel offered in the evening. Great location, clean room, friendly service. The bed, however, was very uncomfortable. It's a sleep number bed so we were looking forward to trying it out. We were so disappointed. No matter how many adjustments we made, we both had 2 horrible nights sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"What a great value"
Loved the room; had a microwave, coffee pot, excellent free wine and cheese at cocktail time, and a breakfast delivered to the room that was all included in the price... what a great hotel. "very happy with The Independent"
Very happy I chose "The Independent." It's a cute, artsy feeling hotel in downtown Philly. Staff were very friendly. Room was clean and quiet. "Great Location for Kimmel Center"
We stayed here because we prefer supporting independent businesses over chains, and we were attending a concert at the Kimmel Center. It was a very quick walk to the Kimmel! Loved the old building, and the room was very comfortable, large and nice, tall ceilings. Sometimes the lighting was a bit dim, and there was noise from a generator or something […] behind the walls of the bathroom. The electric fireplace was a little tacky (gas would be much better). Really nice small hotel. On my arrival they had a wine and cheese reception that evening. Continental breakfast is cool. Really nice rooms with good decor. "The Independent- A Nice Night in Philly"
The hotel was charming and spacious, well appointed with high ceilings and updated amenities. It had a romantic lighting scheme that bordered on dim, especially in the bathroom. The breakfast service was a bonus as was the quiet of the whole hotel. It should be noted that parking is only half a block away and not too inconvenient. Our only issue was […] that the entire building lost hot water in the morning. No one's fault but the place still has a couple wrinkles to iron out. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I did not know there was no on-site parking. When I called, upon my arrival, I was told to use a parking lot and they would stamp my card for free parking. When I left the following day and walked down the block to my parking lot, I was told that it would cost me $15 dollars because I was not given some kind of additional paper. My room was absolutely […] lovely and the bed was so comfortable, I wished I could have taken it home with me. I truly felt as if I was sleeping on a cloud. I would have liked a light in the shower, since the lighting was dim in the bathroom. Their personnel was extremely nice. When I had a problem with the internet working, a gentleman came to my room to help me with it. We discovered that the username and password, although printed in Upper case on the card they had given me, needed to be entered in lower case...problem solved. The following morning, a light breakfast was brought to my room and left outside my door at the time I had specified. (juice, apple, yogurt and a croissant, but no butter or jelly to have with it.) The lady at the desk asked me if everything had been okay. I told her that I would have liked it better if there had been a security bolt on my door. She proceeded to take me to a room and show me how theirs worked. (Though no one had mentioned it to me the night before.) All I had to do to throw the dead bolt was push the door handle up. A simple solution that would have put me more at ease if I had known. I had dinner at the restaurant downstairs, which was more than good..it was spectacular. (If you like Cod..I suggest that..it was just delicious!) As far as being close to things, I didn't have time to search as I had to leave early in the morning. All in all, I thought the hotel was reasonable and top of the line in every other respect. I wouldn't hesitate in going back there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"The Independent in Philly - Comfy and Convenient"
I was very grateful for my tasteful, comfortable room after a long day of traveling. The hotel is very well located in downtown Philadelphia and the staff were friendly and helpful. "Charming, but not quite there"
I stayed here during a conference in Philly last weekend (1/5). While the hotel is conveniently located and visually nice inside, the rooms are just not very comfortable. Firstly, the layout of my room, which was a king deluxe, was very strange. All of the amenities were situated around the perimeter of the space, with the bed perpendular in angle to […] the TV, and with no movable chairs you're forced to turn your head 90 degrees to the right just to see the screen properly, or lay stomach side down across the middle, which is unbearable after about five minutes. Secondly, the building is very old, and while that is part of its charm, it clearly poses certain maintenance considerations. The most important of which is the fact that it's not insulated properly and has gigantic single-pane windows, making it impossible to heat properly during the winter months. The one positive comment I can leave is that shower was excellent–two heads, high pressure, instant heat. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I was a little nervous after reading a few negative reviews about the hotel and neighborhood and a most changed hotels. I am very glad that stayed with the independent.
