Many other 2 or 3 star hotels around this area with the same price range and I choose this because it seems newer and quieter than the others. For the price and the location its not bad. But its about 15 min walk to nearest metro station. Along Gaylang, lots of cheap eats and bar/restaurants but hotel is tucked away in a quiet lane.

We chose Fragrance Hotel - Emerald since this is the one closest to the MRT. The area is quiet since this is relatively remote from the red district area. The room is comfortable, has good air conditioning unit, and has a bath tub (get the Family Room if you want one) which I am surprised as most of the reviews mentioned not having one. One downside […] is that they do not accept early check in. We were there at 12 noon and was advised that we cannot check in yet. We had to deposit our bags as we have limited time to stroll around the city then went back around 5 after visiting Marina Bay. Overall, this is a great value for money as hotels in Singapore can be costly. If you are looking for a great place to sleep with security and comfort to consider then I would recommend this hotel. I have stayed at the Fragrance Emerald a number of times over the years. It is a clean and inexpensive place to stay in Singapore. The rooms are good - nothing special, but ok. The is not a "destination" hotel room that you are going to want to lounge around and relax in, but it is a base in Singapore and you can get cabs easily. The room was extremely small, and the bathroom was odd. There was no shower curtain or tub separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom, so when you turned on the shower the entire bathroom would get soaked. As a result, there was mold all over the bathroom, and soap scum on everything...it was a mess. The AC in the room worked really well, the TV was decent, and the bed wasn't too uncomfortable. If you ask them to recommend some place to eat, they will just tell you to go out to the main road, turn right and you'll see plenty of places to eat. You get one thin sheet, and one thin blanket for your bed, and sometimes you'll come back to your room and bed made up, and sometimes you'll come back to your room with your sheets folded and placed on top of the bed for you to make up. I was a bit leery of the neighborhood (traditional red-light district), but that turned out not to be a problem at all. Hotels in the city center are absurdly expensive, so I gave this a try. Room was adequately sized, not at all new but impeccably clean, aircon worked fine, as did wifi (paid). Shower flowed strongly with plenty of hot water. No complaints […] here. I asked at the desk if the other Fragrance properties were as nice as this one (I visited one other location and it seemed fine as well). He told me this one was probably a bit nicer as it is the closest to the city center, and that it was going to be remodeled soon as well. So my initial concerns that this was going to be a flea-bag hourly hotel turned out to be groundless. The area is hopping at night... a few clubs and LOTS of eateries and even more cell phone / electronics storefronts line the streets. There were plenty of ladies who were obviously working the streets but they were very subtle and never aggressive, so easily ignored. The vast majority of the people in the area seemed like normal folks just out for a stroll and a bite to eat. Safety was just never a concern. During the daytime it was pretty deserted. Access to the city was easy enough... #2 bus boards 1 block away (Lor 8) and takes you past Bugis St. to Chinatown. There's an MRT station (Kallian?) about 15 mins walk (or a SG$ 3 cab ride) from the hotel. If you're just looking for a cheap, safe place to sleep this property fills the bill. Read more

I would not recommend this hotel simply because the service was so awful. Although the rooms are certainly not nice, they are not horrible for the price. The same goes for the location. However, the people at the counter were consistently rude and not attentive.

Despite some of the very negative reviews on this web site, I took a chance on this hotel and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is part of a chain of hotels in the Geylang area, which altho is meant to be in the Red Light area, I didnt see many working girls. The Geylang road is VERY lively, and a better bet than the sterile city centre with tons […] of eateries and tech stores. It takes about 10-15 from the hotel by cab to the city, about 30-45min by bus. Expect to wait for 20min though to get a cab on the street in rush hour. The room is OK for 2 people, altho there is a very thin bed blanket and the matress has a plastic covering which makes the bed hot. The room has a small old-style TV with a few English channels, like Euronews. There is a drum group that operates from a nearby property than has a concert at around 10pm every night, so dont plan on getting to sleep then as the concert is noisy. The windows are sealed, so no fresh air and you have to keep the Aircon on all the time and you can still here the drum concert. There is a DVD player and a kettle with coffee sachets and bottled water. If you are looking a day or two to stay in Singapore, the chain of hotels is OK for it. Not recommended for families though. The MRT station - (Kallang) is about a 10 minute walk: West on Geylang, North on Lorong 1. Geylang is a bit of a grungy area, and I really wouldn't recommend eating at any of the local eateries if you value your health. There's a 7-Eleven in Kallang Station, and a couple of quick eateries just outside of the MRT station. Try the chocolate or creme-caramel pancakes at Soy Tree just outside the MRT station. Purchase your pre-paid EZ Link Card from the Ticket Counter: You'll need at least SGD $35.00 for 7 days, unless you plan on travelling to the more remote areas of the island, (i.e. Tuas, Western Singapore). Public transportation system is pretty easy to navigate. All buses and trains are well marked. Because of the high heat and humidity levels, be sure to bring t-shirts, shorts, and sunglasses. Safest places to eat are in the malls. Sure they're more expensive, but you can't put a price on your health. Parco Bugis Junction is located two (2) station stops away at Bugis Station. Most malls direct entrances from the subway. Lots of food choices located in the basement and street levels of Parco Bugis Junction mall. Highly recommend Ajisen Ramen and Nando's on the street level, and Beard Papa's for Japanese cheesecake sticks - (heaven!) in the basement level. Great tropical juice stands in the basement level, as well. Other great place to eat is also Food Republic on top level of Orchard Central Mall, the food court in the basement level of Plaza Singapura Mall, and the make-shift hawker centre at the Singapore Flyer: (Be sure to try the Grand-Slam Nasi Lemak plate at Selera's). Last 2 times I stayed in this hotel, I was very satisfied with almost everything. But this time I was very badly surprised because the room they gave me was twice as small as before. It was horrible because inside the room there was basically enough space only for your shoes and nothing more. Even the bathroom was twice as small. When I asked why this time I am given such a small room, they explained that the price I pay is for this room and the bigger rooms are "subject of availability" which was extremely annoying because it turns out that last two times I was just pretty da*n lucky. The thing is that you can never be sure in advance what room you will be given so you must be very careful in your consideration. If they give you a room facing the main entrance - it's fine. But if you are unlucky to receive an even numbered room facing the back of the hotel - it's totally not fine. Something else - in my previous review I just forgot to mention that the internet they provide is EXTREMELY expensive. They charge something like S$ 5 for 30 minutes! So the best option is to catch some free wireless hotspot but they are not available in all the rooms! It was very difficult for me to choose a hotel in Singapore because I needed a cheap and convenient hotel for my 1 month stay there. Reading the reviews I was confused if it would be a good choice because if it was for only few nights, it would be fine if the hotel is not good but since I was planning to stay there for a month, I had to be sure. The room was just excellent - very clean, big enough for me, with basic but very convenient bathroom with all the things you need. There was a special installation (very effective) for sucking the steam out of the bathroom. Yes, it could have been better if there was a curtain or glass separating the "wet" department from the toilet but it wasn't a big deal for me. In the room there were TV, hair dryer, electric jug for boiling water, enough packs of dry tissues, glasses and packets of coffee and milk and mineral water. They never let me to run out of these. I don't know should I mention this but the AC was great. Old but very effective. Maybe the only problem which initially p***ed me off was that I couldn't open the windows. They were just locked up with sign "Please, do not force to open the window for security reasons". The bed was not as comfortable as I was used to simply because they were using a leather case for the mattress and the sheets were slipping on it all the time.
