You cannot stay closeer to the airport. You walk from the Hotel elevator across to the the departure gates. Staff was very helpful with directions on using the train to get into the city.

We liked the hotel and would stay there again. Staff was accommodating and helpful during our stay. Hotel and rooms were clean. Rooms were spacious. The room options are confusing. We reserved 3 standard rooms, one of them had a kitchen for the same price but no silverware/china/pots. We did not spend Euro 15 for breakfast there. A butcher and baker are in walking distance and serve breakfast there too. Several restaurants nearby. Commuter rail to Duesseldorf not too far away.

THE ARENA HOTEL FIRST OPENED IN 1952 AND IN ITS EARLY DAYS WAS USED BY LORRY DRIVERS FROM THE STRASSENVERKEHRSGENOSSENSCHAFT ASSOCIATION. SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT UNDER PRIVATE OWNERSHIP, AND THE CLIENTELE HAS CHANGED. TOURISTS, BUSINESS TRAVELLERS, SEASONAL WORKERS AS WELL AS FAMILIES AND LONGER-STAYING GUESTS NOW FORM OUR CLIENT BASE. VELTINS ARENA IS JUST A FEW MINUTES AWAY BY CAR AND IS WITHIN COMFORTABLE WALKING DISTANCE OF THE HOTEL.

The thousand-year-old village of Gelsenkirchen boomed during the Industrial Revolution and was for decades the centre for German coal production. Now, former coal mine buildings house exhibitions and training academies. The city has two impressive castles, the 13th-century Berge Castle and the renaissance Horst Castle.
