AZIMUT Hotel Koeln City Center - Cologne

It was great. The breakfast buffet is good, but not included in the price of the room. One could actually eat at the really good sandwich chain (Kamp I think). The hotel is one train stop away from the main train station. (I had a train pass for the week), but can be walked as well.

One disappointing problem was the internet service. I selected this hotel because the description says there is wireless internet available in the rooms. This is NOT true. I only travelled with my tablet, not laptop, so the WIRED connection was of no use to me. There was also no option of a kettle/coffee maker, even on request, they said they did not have any. My room was huge, but the 2 sides of windows all directly overlooked the train tracks! The silver lining of that is that the hotel is super easy to get to, right at the hansaring stop. The neighborhood is not very interesting or nice, but it's easy to get around from there. I would stay here again, because the room was really big and clean, and the bed was reasonably comfortable, noise doesn't really bother me. For what we paid this hotel was a great deal. Room was very large, bathroom was big, with six foot tub and clean. It is about a ten minute walk to the Cathedral and the train station is less than a block away. On the downside - parking is expensive and not really possible as an in and out thing. For the price, I thought the value was pretty good. Hard to find parking, but easy to get to and close to lots of places (if you have a car). Rooms are clean. I didn't like that the 1st floor where breakfast is served is a smoking floor.

The hotel is right by a train stop so you will be able to hear the trains. The noise was not unbearable but if your a light sleeper ask for a room not facing the train station. It takes about 5 mins to get to the main station and trains run frequently. The room we had was HUGE. You walk in and you have a hallway the size of the bathroom. After four days in a noisy, more expensive hotel in Amsterdam, I was so pleased with my room at the Azimut. I was worried about the trains that were mentioned, but they were a mere rumble in the background with no whistles. I could see the Dom from my window. Though I was there for six nights and the hotel was full up for most of that time, I never […] heard another soul once I got to my room. No noise through the walls, no noise from the hallway early in the morning. For those who like quiet to sleep, it was definitely peaceful. There are good overlapping blackout curtains as well. The bed was firm but comfortable with Euro style duvets without top sheets. My room was very large (a corner one, maybe they're not all that way) with a little sitting area and a large bookcase in the entryway where the closet was. The bathroom was also roomy and properly appointed. The location is great if you're planning to use the S-Bahn or U-Bahn trains. I just walked across the street and hopped on. It's an easy to use system - even the ticketing kiosks have an English button and the maps are easy to use in any language. If you're heading to the Dom area or Koelnmesse, though, it does require a transfer on the U-Bahn, but trains were frequent, safe & clean. The internet was via ethernet cable, and I had to retrieve a code every 24 hours but it was a super-fast connection. The front desk was always cordial and helpful. Read more

This was quite a bad hotel experience. The overall quality of the hotel is good, location is good and rooms are relatively clean and large. However the problems I experienced with my stay far outweigh the good points: 1) Free Internet did not work over our entire stay of 1 week. We found out from the staff that the internet has not been working for […] weeks, even before we arrived. No compensation or assistance was offered by the hotel. 2) No hot water in the morning. The hot water was fine in the evening but every morning, I had to deal with a luke-warm to cold shower. 3) No English TV - only 1 channel (CNN). Everything else is in German. Added to this, the TV in each room is probably about the size of a large computer screen so its very difficult to see from your bed. I will likely never stay at this hotel again. Read more

Went to Cologne over a long weekend in mid-December to enjoy the Christmas markets. Chose this hotel based on the positive reviews we read and also because there was a good deal on. We arrived at the hotel at nearly midnight and had no problems getting there from the airport. It's right by the station. The first thing that hits you when you walk in […] is the smell of cigarettes. However we had no problems checking in and chose a non smoking room in a non smoking section of the hotel. Our room was massive, clean and very comfortable. We were given a room in the 'inner' part of the hotel so was also very quiet. Overall we had a very pleasant stay at Azimut. We did not use the breakfast facilities but there are two bakeries by the hotel for breakfast. The walk into the old town centre took only 10-15 mins and was a pleasant one. A couple of evenings they put out some hot punch at the reception so we can have a warm drink when we return from the cold. The only things that made it slightly less than perfect for us was the cigarette smell in the communal areas of the hotel, the fact that the free wifi is only available at the reception and the lack of tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. Very disspaointed. My first impression was good - friendly reception, a nice looking room. It is close to the local train which runs every 5 minutes into Köln. Now for the negatives. On the table was a "complimentary" bottle of water with a very high price tag attached. I never tried it. I then requested a kettle to make coffe. They do not supply coffee […] or tea and I can get hot water in the bar. The free wi-fi in every room had absolutely no signal. It will not work beyond the first floor. Having a bath or shower is only fine if you like cold water. We tried in the morning and in the evening - at best it was luke warm. There is no public area in the hotel where a non-smoker can relax. The hotel was lovely, staff were helpful and friendly. Sauna and gym were a nice addition. It was a fair but pleasant walk to the old town but really not a problem. Only suggestion would be that they should have tea and coffee making facilities in the room.
