it was a special treat staying at the shiv niwas given its history. kids will love watching james bond's octopussy and seeing so many familiar sights. the service was excellent and 2 of us were ill. they did everything from finding a doctor promptly to making us special foods. our room was lovely and the view spectacular. the bathroom needs an update […] and the outside looks like it needs a huge renovation and there were a few language issues, but all in all, the shiv niwas is a gem. I stayed at the Shiv Nivas Palace in 1982 and was very impressed with the hotel then. It was run by the Taj Group at that time. The location is great, overlooking Lake Pichola, the rooms then were exquisite as they had mostly original furniture from the Maharaja's possessions, and primarily, the service was impeccable - one felt as if one truly was […] staying as the Maharaja's guest. However, the years haven't been kind to the Shiv Nivas. The beautiful crystal chandeliers have dust and cobwebs, the paint is peeling off the walls, the place is dirty and noisy with people preparing for events, the food is mediocre at best and the service is less than professional. It appears that the focus of the hotel has changed from providing a glorious experience to visitors to being a place catering to weddings. The hotel still has potential - the views are spectacular, and the layout is lovely - however, it is not run as a five-star hotel despite the rates. Having had an incredible experience at the Lake Palace Hotel at the same lake, one can see what the Shiv Nivas could truly be if run along similar lines. We had a marvelous stay here. The hotel was very quiet as it was low season and very hot, but nothing was lacking. Service very considerate and attentive, the room was huge and well appointed - the hotel very very atmospheric. It is a maharana's palace, built early part of last century - and looks like one. First of all the hotel really has nothing to do inside and the staff is not very accomodating. We had a flight at 8 in the night but had to leave our room at 12:30 and were not able to stay till even 1:30..... Location is great, only 2-3 miniutes walk to visit the City Palace, 4-5 minutes walk to visit the most active temple in Udaipur. The hotel is romantic palace style, quiet, however the room facilities is kind of old. Wifi is not consistent.
