As expected from the other reviews, this place appears to have undergone nothing but basic cleaning and essential maintenance since probably the early 80s. So much so that it's something of a curiosity which I found mildly entertaining. What's more the style it was last decorated in isn't that classic - it would have been very fashionable in the 80s […] which adds to it's peculiarity in 2012. The staff were nice enough to us and allowed us to come back in the afternoon having checked out hours before to use the spa facilities - we didn't have time to do anything other than shower and changing area but these are in the same state as the rest of the hotel - a bit moudly and dilapidated. Location and parking are very convenient and we had a very nice meal in the shiny and new looking branch of ASK Italian on the opposite side of the High Street. Read more

A terrible hotel. Old rooms that haven't been updated in years and years. Curtain rod was broken. windows so dirty you really couldn't see out well. Sheets were at least clean. Towels were tattered. Carpet and bed spread were so old they need to be replaced.

Nice location for Lewis but - these rooms need some capex spent on them, they look like early 70's not updated and look / are beaten up. Car park is not that good but not much can be done about that give its central location on the main street.

A beautiful front of house with lovely fireplaces and beams. Its a shame we were stuck in a hole of a room in "the lodge", an annexe in the car park. It was small, too hot, even with the heating off. The window had no safety catch so if we opened it to get some much needed fresh air, there was no security. The room was on the ground floor so someone […] could easily have climbed in. We arrived at the room to find that it hadn't been cleaned yet and were turned away. It was only a 30 min wait so we didn't mind too much. What we did mind was that when we got back to our room later that night after a lovely evening in Lewes we found that what had appeared earlier as a clean room was in fact just a tidied one. I went to get a drink and both cups were dirty as were the glasses in the bathroom. So my boyfriend and I spent an uncomfortably hot and unsettled night in a too hot and insecure room. I stayed in the 70's Annex at the rear of the main building. It was very run down and tacky. My door handle and lock were hanging off and my Window wouldn't lock or close properly. I reported this to reception and the next day I had a do not disturb notice over my rooms still broken door handle and my room was not cleaned or made up. Strange reaction […] to a valid complaint. The leisure center has very old and rickety equipment - again dating back to the 70's or possibly 80's at a push. The Hotel staff were great. The Log Fires were welcoming. Best to book a room at the rear of the hotel as the rooms at the front can be noisy.

We couldn't fault the staff who were very friendly and helpful. The evening meal was supberb as was the service in the restaurant. Breakfast was buffet but still freshly cooked none the less. We are non meat eaters but had sufficient choice. The only down side was the hotel needs an overhall. The bathroom was small and the shower took 5 minutes before […] it became hot enough. The towels also looked as if they are not laundered on a hot enough wash which they should be for items of multiple users. Our room was 'quircky' as it sloped down to the headboards! But this didn't stop us sleeping. Which was partially due to ....Hooray they still use blankets and I hate and cannot sleep with quilts. I could have done without being woken by loud talking voices in the room next door until 2.45 when a bang on the wall seems to remind the occupants that it was only a partition wall. Read more

'Characterful' hotel in the middle of Lewes, very convenient from train station (just up the hill and turn left!). Breakfast is good too, especially since they now seem to include hot buffet as standard (on previous stays this was a paid-for extra). The Double bed was dreadful, we both seemed to roll in to the middle. The room was very warm even with the rad turned down. The tiles on the bathroom floor had little grout so some were loose and it made the bathroom feel dirty. The peach coloured bathroom was so out dated as well. This hotel has character. The building is old and historic, it is rather quaint. It isn't a 5 star hotel, and neither does it charge 5 star prices. It was better than some of the reviews I'd read led me to believe. It was excellent value for money. The gym is a little tired, but the pool and sauna were clean enough, pleasant and relaxing. My first room was at the front of the hotel, I am a light sleeper and I found this room too noisy. I asked for a different room for the remainder of my stay and the staff organised this for me very efficiently. The second room was a good size, clean and quiet. Unfortunately, the bathroom was rather small, the loo didn't flush well and the loo prevented the bathroom door from shutting!! The breakfast was of good quality and plentiful. We stayed (family of four) in the annexed building. Run down. Crackling noises with every single step! Smell of dump; we had to change room as it was unbearable. No sound insulation. Awful matresses. I thought I will fall on the floor. No wifi despite advertised otherwise. Central location; free parking. Avoid it if you can.

I wanted a couple of days in Lewes to sample a few real ale pubs & wanted a central location.@ reasonable cost. The White Hart did a good job for me with a good breakfast included & a hot swimming pool in a very cold spell.I would visit again if only for Harveys Christmas Ale in bars with 2 log fires.

After seeing the reviews I was not expecting to be delighted and as arriving as we did at 10pm on a Saturday night we had to park in the Main Street not in the car park and there was a large noisy boozy wedding going on BUT despite my fears the room was spacious comfy and warm if dated and the bath was long and there was lots of hot water and the noise […] did not extend to our space so after a good nights sleep in comfy beds we were ready for our breakfast. This was really impressive being served in a wood pannelled grand room with attentive staff, buffet style with huge range of choice, just what we wanted before catching the ferry. I stay in hotels for business for about 6 months of the year and this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. I really wish I had taken notice of the reviews beforehand. PLEASE TAKE YOUR MONEY AND CUSTOM ELSEWHERE! From arrival the staff were rude and unapologetic and just stood watching as I struggled through the door with my bags and up two flights […] of stairs. The car park is very very small, if you drive a large car, think again! The room was dirty, lights not working, tv broken, hair in the shower, filthy cups and a door right beside the headboard that was stammed shut all night by other guests. When I told reception about the problems they didn't even apologise. I was informed the pool closed at 21.00 but at 20.20 I was rudely turned away. It also didn't open again until 7.00 which in my opinion is too late for a business traveler. I was told the 'walls were too thick' for the wifi, which was a load of rubbish because there was a hotel hotspot that had full signal in my room and after all the poor service I'd had I was refused the password! The next morning after a fairly comfortable nights sleep, besides the breeze flowing under the door to the window, I found that the shower didn't work... The icing on the cake!! I didn't stay for breakfast and laughed as the man checking out after me was also complaining of an awful stay. Please don't book here and find somewhere better to go! Read more

Warm, welcoming staff knowledgeable about Lewes. Hotel appeared to need a refurbish/redecorating here-and-there, nevertheless, the Hotel still had a certain charm with wonderful views from the dining area of the Sussex Downs.

Quite an experience, staying here. Closest thing to time travel back to the 1950s you can get. The hotel and location is not suitable for an elderly person with mobility problems. There is no lift and ground floor rooms are in the annex across the car park. Also Lewes is very hilly. I'll summarise this quickly. The hotel is a nice looking hotel with good friendly staff. However for business use it's a waste of time, with wifi only accessible in the down stairs lounge, which isn't the nicest of rooms. In addition the bed was far to hard, and i got the impression the breakfast was done on the cheap. A fairly bang average stay.
