Spent Christmas 2012 with my wife and daughter to RIU MoBay. My father joined us. We all had a wonderful time; actually, we'd stayed at this hotel once before, so we expected nothing less than good food (including native fare), appealing and comfortable accommodations, and helpful, competent staff. The hotel was okay, food was average at best, no servers to serve you drinks at the pool or beach. No snacks served between meals. No room service. We never heard true Jamacian music while we were there (steel drums). Weather was great, drinks were okay and as strong as you wanted them (tips were encouraged). Jamacia was nice to visit.

The Beds were a little hard, but the rooms were very clean. Food is crap. Only the Italian restaurant and jerk chicken from beach hut are good. Launch and dinner buffet are really bad quality. All drinks are 95% water. You always have to ask the barman to add more drink and less ice. Only few people from the staff are friendly and helpful. Most of them never smile. Poor service!

Hotel is located right on the beach and is very nicely designed & landscaped. Enjoyed the stay with a few exceptions. 1. Some of our members' room air conditioning was not working efficiently as it should, since the climate on the island is very warm and humid. 2. For the three speciality restaurants with reservation requirements and a dress code, for […] all the trouble we had to go through to make reservations at these restaurants, the food, the staff and the service were not worth our trouble. At these restaurants, the required dress code was never enforced, the food was poorly prepared (substandard) and the wait staff was slow and inefficient. I would not recommend any of the three speciality restaurants in the hotel as they are. Needs much improvements to make them special. 3. The hotel travel service desk personnel should have much more daily updates on the tour packages that they sell to the hotel guests on daily bases. The information they had was sketchy at best on any of the tours, and wasn't helpful enough. 4. The nightly entertainment needs some improvement as well. The dancers worked very hard on stage, but the choriographing was not done well. 5. We did like an all day dining capability while we stayed there. Overall, the self-service buffet restaurant staff and chefs were working very hard to offer very good services at these locations. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The sheets and bedding were VERY WET!!! Even after changing the sheets, it still felt like sleeping in a bed someone soaked the mattress and placed dry sheets over it. the food was 'ok' there was not even seasoned food i.e. it felt like it was cooked for a diabetic or elderly person. Our second time at this location. The only thing I would add would be a coffee shop/cafe (there is one listed in the description, but no one seems to know anything about it). I love the towel sculptures left on my bed every evening (not a deal breaker, but certainly, a nice touch).

PROs: Staff was very friendly particularly once they got to know you. Hotel was well-kept and clean. CONs: Food was mediocre but decent. We had significantly better food on our adventures outside the hotel. Beach itself was nice but spending time in the water wasn't an option as it was full of vegetation after 4 feet. We ended up working with another clerk it get it fixed but they delay caused us to miss the sunset in Negril. I also had the opportunity to visit the nursing station as I was stung by a bee and experiencing swelling in my finger. Ended up paying $30 US for the nurse to give me one dose antihistamine and anti-inflammatory cream. He wanted me to pay $180 US + medication costs to call a doctor. Hotel room and facilities were fine. Food was generally average, but the restaurants were disappointing. The worst part of the hotel was the sea. The sea floor was covered in grass and seaweed (not floating in the water, but growing on the sand below the water), which made the water dark and unpleasant in contrast to the usual Caribbean experience […] of clear waters. Even where there was no grass the sand felt very strange, almost jelly-like, oily and soppy. It left an unpleasant smell on the skin. To top it off, the water was much colder than expected. Staff was not customer service oriented. Very disappointed with the food. Last, you adverttized king bed, they tied two full size beds together after we made a fuss about not getting what we paid for. Overall, I wouldn't recommend to anyone. We stayed at cheaper hotels in Jamaica in the past that would put the RUI to shame!

Fabulous! The place is beautiful and large! It was bustling with visitors relaxing, staff working hard, and a tremendous laid back atmosphere. The welcome drink was awesome as they made it to my liking and the Beachfront Jacuzzi Suite was breathtaking. There was just the right amount social stimulation too. Also, there were those quiet moments where you could kick back fresh coconut pick fresh the tree next to you and chat with couple next to you. The staff was the best. They went out of their way to deliver a smile and constantly asked if we needed anything. They were super prepared during the hurricane by making sure guests were taken care of and things went as scheduled, while quietly prepping the facilities. We barely knew a storm was coming because they were so professional at blending in. The only downside was the Jacuzzi button wouldn’t stay down and black flakes and hair squirted out when tried we tried to press the bubble-making button. It was never fixed, therefore we could not use the Jacuzzi. I felt we could have paid less and gotten a regular room. Don’t get me wrong the room was huge with a bidet, but most people don’t pay extra for that, they want the private Jacuzzi for romance. Despite the Jacuzzi everything else was perfect! I am now a Riu follower like the many other people I met on the trip! I can see why people love this place so much! Read more

The staff seemed mostly friendly. We had the occasional people that seemed inconvenienced by our questions. When we got there we had to inform them that we booked an ocean front room. We ended up getting one, but they told us there were no king beds in those rooms. So we had to push our two double bends together...not too romantic on your 1st anniversary. […] The beds were also EXTREMELY hard, and the pillows weren't much better. We had some issues with our drinks being restocked too. They were supposed to be restocked every other day, but that wasn't consistent. And when we asked at the front desk for more water we were told we had to wait until they came to our room, which at one point was 3 days later. The upside was that the buffets had a lot of variety, and they had a bar that was open 24 hours. Another nice feature was the ocean. It was very clean water with little seaweed, but about four feet out it was mucky at the bottom. My husband and I just bought rafts and floated out once it got mucky. The ocean was also very calm, so swimming and floating around were easy. The rooms also seemed very clean, and were cleaned daily. The pools weren't as nice as the pictures. They seemed rather dirty, especially around the bar area. I would often find straws and cups floating by. And there seemed to be a lot of tiles missing around the pools. We were also let down by the 3 restaurants. You had to make reservations and all but 1 were still buffets! All in all fairly disappointing! Read more

Your staying in a hotel. When u book a hotel they don't let u pic of the bedk the quailty bed. It is what it is. The ice machine in our building did not work, looked as if it hadn't in years. We were told that they did not have room service so we had to get ice on our own. RIU Montego Bay was a lovely get-away with enough diversity to occupy your day relaxing and with plenty of activities every night. The rooms were comfortable, the ac was cold and adjustable in the room, we had a balcony that opened onto a garden on the second story, but the hotel did not provide shampoo and lotions. The water in the bay was murky and […] the bottom was slimey and grassy, so water shoes would be a good idea if you plan to bob with a drink. The pools seemed to be the water venue of choice and the bar contributed to their popularity. Food was excellent and the variety was so extensive that it could suit any taste, from curried goat to pizza. The dessert cart was my downfall. We could not make reservations for dinner in the three specialty dining halls - Italian, Asian and steakhouse, which were fully booked several days in advance. We booked activities outside the hotel and were pleased with the professionalism of the travel staff. Ziplining in the Jamaican mountains was superb. The absence of internet was a disappointment. The hotel claims to have a hot spot in the lobby, but even the front desk staff could not make it work. Checking in and seeking assistance from the reception staff in order to inform our relatives that we had arrived safely was our first and only unsatisfactory experience at RIU Montego Bay. Read more

Overall I enjoyed the facilities, the staff, and entertainment . The great dissapointment I had was with the bed, the most dreadful I have slep on, as it was too hard. A futon or cushion on the floor would have been more comfortable or even a Motel 6 bed would have been better. It did not make for an enjoyable swim or stay in the water. I further had to pay the nurse for treatment to a family member who had been injured by a Sea urchins, the nurse said this was the cause, that is a resident in the weeds.
