Oceano Hotel and Spa - Half Moon Bay

We had a lovely stay at the Oceano. Dillon at the front desk was very personable but upon checkout, two other staff were a bit stuffed shirt. The last memory from staff should be one that makes the customer want to return. A, "thanks for your patronage, come again" would have been nice. Overall, though, we plan to stay again, beautiful room, very clean […] and comfy and the underground and free parking garage was a bonus. Be sure and check out the shops on Main Street, Half Moon Bay; but go early because they were closing by 5 p.m. Perhaps not on summer hours yet. Read more

Great stay as usual; however, this time they said we were upgraded. We did have a stellar view but the living room was smaller and difficult to watch the TV.......too close and had to look up. The bathroom was much smaller too. So a minor disappointment to an overall wonderful stay.

It was a nice hotel with friendly staff. We stayed in a villa which was nice. My only complaints were the view was of the back parking lot and not anywhere near the water as photos would imply. Also, the bed was hard. Other than that it's a great location at a good hotel. I would stay there again.

Over all, it was very good. Two minor issues. My reservation was for a room with an ocean view. When we first got to the hotel, our view was of the parking lot. When I went back down to the front desk to get the room changed, it felt a little like pulling teeth. The Oceano Hotel is expensive compared to most lodging in the area so our expectations were high. It could be a first rate small spa hotel but the little touches are missing. The hotel is very fresh and the lobby and rooms are quite beautiful. Our king bed room had a spacious living area with all the amenities and a huge bathroom with separate shower […] and soaking tub. Then why skimp on the toilet paper?? It was the thin cheesy kind found in cheap restrooms. The towels were downright skimpy. The bed sheets were thin and slippery, so that the blankets kept heading for the floor during the night. The hotel bar was very pleasant but charged big city prices. No breakfast was available - fortunately there is a coffee shop within a short walk. If you want a full breakfast, you will have to drive. The spa is not actually in the hotel but is located in the deserted mini-mall attached to the hotel. If you love to ramble along the shore, you can step outside the hotel and walk for miles. But unfortunately, the Oceano doesn't quite deliver the luxurious experience that it could. Read more

The spa in this "luxury spa" hotel was NOT OPEN! It was closed entirely M & T, but we were told if we called and left a message, our call would be returned. We called Wednesday and call was returned late Wednesday. Could not get simultaneous booking or back-to-back appointments for treatments, but were told they would work on it and call us back. They […] never called back. Spa was dark and closed every day until Fri. There was no concierge service and staff were unable to answer basic questions or make any arrangements other than call a taxi. Food was very good, but restaurant not open for breakfast, lunch during week. Staff courteous and polite, but not very knowledgeable. Room was lacking sugar, napkins, and stirrers for the courtesy coffee. Bathroom cosmetics were minimal. Safe locked when we arrived and had to be reset, which took some time. Location is not within the town of Half Moon Bay. A few good restaurants and shops close by, but not within walking distance to town. It is not "on the ocean" as it implies. It overlooks a parking lot - not the hotel's - and ocean is across the street. Water was turned off 10 - 2 on day after arrival for maintenance. This was a wonderful hotel and a wonderful experience. From the moment we checked in to the time we left we had excellent service from the staff. We enjoyed the room and the view. The bar was great and the SPA was a true SPA experience. We will definitely go back.

As I pulled the bed overs back to get in bed, I found red stain on the comfortable duvet. I couldn't tell if it was dry blood or wine. The staff brought me a new cover right away but nevertheless I shouldn't find strange stain like that for the price we paid per night. I'd expected more. We flew in to the HMB airport, parked on the south end of the ramp and walked 5 minutes to the hotel. There are about 10 bars/restaurants within 5 minutes walking time from the hotel. Check out the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company! The hotel food is excellent. Staff was friendly but the bar was understaffed the night we were there since an employee called […] in sick. The hotel is about 4 years old. The fitness center was very clean and had a lot of equipment and free weights. There is a spa on the property and a handful of boutique shops attached to the hotel. Across the street you can find kayak, surfboard, paddle board rentals, a fishing & crabbing pier, the harbor and a waterfront park. We lucked out with a sunny 65 degree day in February! My wife and I enjoy this hotel as a great value option for consumers who, like us, also enjoy staying at the Ritz Carlton HMB - for roughly half the cost, you get a larger room, free parking and similar proximity to surrounding sights and restaurants. The room is very clean and comfortable and for a few dollars more you can get a good sized soaking […] tub. The views are not as spectacular as the Ritz, but they are far from awful. You get a view of the HMB harbor - fishing boats, etc. The drive to downtown is roughly the same. I would highly recommend this property for value oriented consumers who enjoy nice accommodations. Beautifully appointed, spacious room. We stayed in a Princeton King on the top floor. I did have to put in ear plugs due to the fog horn. Also, the TV was too high above the fire place, so my neck got a little stiff from having to tilt up to watch TV. Otherwise very nice room and bathroom!

Overall it's a nice hotel at a good location, however, it falls short of a good value stay. For the price we paid, however, we found a couple of the amenities disappointing. For example, the in-room WiFi was so slow that my Android tablet was practically useless for web surfing. And then there's no HD TV channels. Stayed at Oceano Hotel and Spa after lengthy visit to wine country. Wanted to show the family a little of the Pacific Coastline , and still hit SFO the next day. Was told by Expedia that there was a pull out sofa, but there was none at the hotel - or cots , for that matter( to accommodate older children). However for the average family of four, the […] room itself was spacious with a fireplace and facing the ocean. There is a fog horn at night, but we closed the sliding glass and turned on noise machine, and all good. Getting to the airport can be a challenge, but is definitely possible if you allow time. Great hotel, in beautiful location. Very large, comfortable room with view to harbor. The coastline is amazing, with the famous Mavericks beach just a short walk. The very little town is nice. At the end of a wedding and honeymoon, stumbled on this hotel online the night before we left out of San Francisco - wish I had found it sooner, I think we would have stayed several nights. The room is uniquely laid out - very pleasing and relaxing in the King suit. The cathedral ceilings made it airy (not to mention the sliding door and private balcony). The seperate sitting area was nice for watching TV (we saw the Giants win the World Series on it!). Only downsides; one washclothe in the room, one bathroom cup, the exhaust fan did not […] work, and the fog horn blew all not in what appeared an inconsistent pattern and kept waking us up. The next morning we realized we should have turned on the machine to mimick the sound of rain, a waterfall, summer evening...etc. That "white noise" may have allowed a better night sleep. The front desk staff in general were not very helpful or cordial. The staff in bar and grill were able to answer all our questions and gave us wonderful service but that should have been the job of the front desk. When we arrived we were not told about any of the amenities available to us in the hotel so it wasnt until I arrived home that I noticed […] in the list of amenities the hotel has a fitness room. We traveled off grounds in seach of a fitness center when there was one in the hotel all along. All in all the room was very comfortable and clean. My only objection is really more a matter of taste - everything looked like it needed a good paint job. The furniture was supposed to look distressed but in fact it just looked old and beat up with paint peeling. I would go back because we loved the town but may shop around before staying here again. The hotel itself was quaint and pleasant, but the NOISE WAS INTOLERABLE. We could hear every footstep, every door slam. If that weren't enough there was a wedding each night that we stayed. Late night drunken wedding guests trickled into the open lobby. The front desk had promised us when we checked in that the noise would die down after 11pm. I called […] the front desk at 11:30pm after hearing people in the lobby sound like they were just outside our room, and was told "yes, we know and they are wrapping things up". Forty-five minutes later the boisterous guests had not "wrapped things up" and we had to call the front desk again. These weren't even hotel guests, they were wedding guests. Clearly the comfort and sanity of paying hotel guests was of little importance to the staff. They were kind in their apologies but took no action to abate the noise. What was supposed to be a romantic and much-needed getaway for my boyfriend and myself turned into a huge disappointment... and at an astronomical cost. Read more
