"Below expectations"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
Having stayed at the Landis Hotel in Taipei, I expected Icon to offer the same service quality or better. After checking in, no one bothered to show us to our room and introduce us to the facilites available. I booked a harbor view room for an increased price. Sure there was a view of the harbor, if you looked to the left side. Directly outside my window was the rooftop of the mall. The concierge was helpful. I had one meal at the lobby cafe. My mom ordered a chowder in bread bowl. The bread came out toasted with green mold!! How did they miss that?! Killed our appetites immediately! I've read comments comparing Icon to the Four Seasons. One of our travel companions stayed there and I had an opportunity to rest in her room during our long afternoons in Hong Kong island. The hotel is impeccable and there was definitely no mold in our food.

Decent size room for Hong Kong. Definitely not huge but plenty big enough. Nice bathroom. Perfect Kowloon location. Clean and nice

"Pleasant surprise"
For this price the hotel room was unexpectedly spacious. Nicely round shaped large window with a decent park view. Staff wasn't the friendliest but surely helpful and polite. Within walking distance to Central station, so I always walked down and took a taxi back up to the hotel. Supermarket around the corner was convenient. I had a room in the cheapest […] price category first but paid an additional small fee to change to a better view and it was definitely worth it. From the hotel you can walk up to the Peak in less than an hour. Read more
"YWCA The Garden View, Hong Kong, Best value"
This is my 6th time staying in the Hotel. Room is clean, Staff is friendly, Taxi stand is in front of the hotel, and it is next to two parks, and the air quality is excellent, plus there is a upscale super market in the next building. And the price for the room in comparison to the others , is always best for your money.

"YWCA Hong Kong"
I would not recommend this hotel, it's a bit far from everything and if you walk back to it from central area, it's all up hill, which is not good in hot and humid Hong Kong. Also I had a problem with Taxi drivers even knowing where this place was. The location is in the middle of a fairly quiet residential area, so if you like being far from everything […] and peaceful area, it's fine. But we prefer to be a bit more central, so we would not use this hotel again. The other thing we didn't like was this hotel did not have WiFi in the room. They only had WiFi for a fee in the lobby. There are very few places to eat nearby, the hotel restaurant is super expensive and not that good. If you must here there, exit the hotel and enter the restaurant through the other side of the building. It's the same restaurant, but they charge less than half the price. Read more
"Good value off the beaten path"
THe hotel has a very convenient bus that takes you to all the fun places. IT is excellent value and always clean, comfortable and pleasant.

"Very clean and close to Central"
Stayed here in order to be close to the Central area including the train station. About a 15 minute walk through Central to the train station. Coming the other way is uphill so I would suggest a cab. Small rooms but clean and comfortable.
"YWCA - Garden Hotel"
Excellent location with convenient access to all major attractions in central Hong Kong.
"Clean, relatively cheap, location +/-"
About 15 minute walk up hill from central station but quick cab ride and walk down isn't too bad. Nice to be fairly close to Soho district for eating although at night need to take a cab there because probably not safe to walk through the park at that time. Mattress standard fairly firm, room clean, great shower.
"Good Location, small rooms and hard beds"
This hotel has a great location if you want to stay close to the central station, which is only 10 min walking. We also walked back and forth to Lan Kwai fong and Soho witout any problems. The tram to the Peak also stops at the same road as the hotel. (but have to buy ticket before hand) . No wireless internet connection unfortunatly and the pay for […] cable was a bit expensive. Other then that is was a good hotel. The beds was very hard though. Clean and nice people. Read more
"Amazing hotel for a great price"
After having stayed in a ~$150/night hotel in Causeway Bay, I switched to the YWCA Garden View. The room did not disappoint - it was larger, more comfortable, and with a better view than my other hotel. The only complaint would be that it's not near public transit, but it is only a short walk to the The Tram and a short (and cheap) cab ride to central. […] Definitely stay here if you have the chance. Read more
"Hong Kong YWCA Garden View Hotel"
The Garden View (Mid-Levels) is a wonderful lodging for business and family travel. The location is merely base taxi fare away from Hong Kong (Terminus) Station at Central. It is about a 10-minute walking distance to Queen's Road where major banks are and to the U.S. Consulate General. It takes about 5 minutes walking to the Peak Tram Stations and St. […] Joseph's Catholic Church. There is a grocery store and a gas station just around the corner. The Hong Kong Botanical and Zoological Garden is located on the other side of Garden Rd with a pedestrian overpass and admission is free. This is my 3rd time staying there. I highly recommend this hotel. Read more
"YWCA Garden View in Hong Kong"
Hoel was okay. Could have beter amenities, including breakfast, internet facility open late at night, etc.
"YWCA Hong Kong Island"
The hotel was great! The staff was friendly and helpful. I had to go to the emergency room in the middle of the night as something got lodged in my eye and they were extremely helpful in the process. A recommended improvement would be to have information about surrounding areas and suggestions for tourists. For example the closest 7-Eleven, coffee […] shop, etc. things that usually people don't research before they arrive at a location. Especially because I hear internet is very expensive at hotels in Hong Kong. A transportation recommendation/price guide may be helpful too as Taxi's, buses, and Trains are equally available. More info about the hotel would have been nice too, for example: if and where is the fitness center. What is the restaurant menu/hours/prices etc. Overall though the place was terrific. Read more
"Affordable for location but pricey internet"
The room is clean and basic, good value for the price overall. The annoying thing is the price of internet (about $12 a day), though there is one computer downstairs you can use for free but only during certain hours.
"Nice and fair - but nothing special!"
Great rooms, very clean and in new and good condition. Internet was terrible though - only availableby cable, and it was not working well! Resturant was not at the same level as the rooms and the front desk service. All in all - a nice hotel at fair rate.
"Great place to stay with spacious room but poor location"
If you want to travel by public transport in HK, then this is far off from any MTR stations. THe closest is central where it will cost you $20 on a taxi. Hotel interiors and comfort is great and has all facilities.
"Great hotel, but on the hill"
It is a great hotel with pretty hard bed, but it is not uncomfortable. The hotel is located on the hill, so quite a bit of a walk is required, unless you take a cab. Cab rides are quite cheap. Great area surrounding the hotel, not much of a view though. I thought the price was great for the 4 star hotel in a great location with nice amenities and service. […] Staff was proffesional; however, not everybody understood English well enough. Read more
"Brililant hotel"
Not much more expensive than a hostel in Kowloon, HK island is a great location. LOvely rooms, comforatbel and clean. Would stay again.
"Great place to stay for a great price!"
The Garden View was very nice. The hotel staff was very kind and ready to give service. The room was very clean as well. The only negative is that the hotel is not very close the subway station. You must walk for 20 minutes up a very long hill. However, you can take a taxi from Central or Admiralty for a about 20 HKD. Anyways I would recommend […] this hotel to anyone looking for nice place to stay for low cost. Read more
""Outstanding Hotel""
This hotel sits just high enough on the mid-levels to give you peace-of-mind: You're basically directly across the street from the beautiful botanical gardens, up the hill from the pristine Hong Kong city park, and a quick red cab taxi base fare ride from the bars. The street is so simple to remember: "MACDON'L RD!" Every cab driver can interpret this […] (In the very least, they'll just bring you to an actual Mcy'Ds, which incidentally happen during my stay) The accommodations are modern and well maintained. There is a grocery store basically on the premises (Take the elevator down to 'LG', exit and take the opposite elevator one flight up, BAM! groceries/cheap 12 packs of Knight brand beer beverages!) For the rate, you can't beat this place. Read more
"Excellent value for money"
Considering the price we paid for our room we were pleasantly surprised by the YWCA. The lobby was very smart (with very effective air-conditioning) and the staff always helpful. Our rooms were clean and the beds were comfy. The shower in the bathroom was amazing. The bathroom ceiling did start to leak during our stay but was fixed within an hour […] of calling reception. The hotel is located up the hill, past the Lower Peak Tram Station. It's only a 15 minute walk from central though and you can cool off in the hotel lobby! Taxis from central are about 30 HKD. All the facilities at the hotel were clean and working. There is also a supermarket in the building next to the hotel which proved very useful. Read more
"Will stay there again"
My friend was able to book the room online for a special price, however, when we called the hotel directly they did not offer special rate over the phone. When we got an upgrade(free of charge) because of the remodeling of some rooms. The picture of the room I saw online is exactly what I got + a great view. The only negative about the hotel is […] cleaning lady came at 9:45am each morning. Also internet packages they offered weren't practical for us -They don't offer packages for people who stay for one week. It's either per day or two weeks. However, internet is not wireless and wasn't working and they charge you for the cable cord. Read more
"Impressed! YWCA"
Nothing much I can say. Price and quality -> Perfect. Good price for area like this. Right at the mid level in Central.

"YWCA - Average in most respects"
Reasonable size room for HK island and much cheaper than others we looked at. Service was basic, and they weren't very good at responding to our questions, but cleanliness and comfort was good. HK island is much nicer and quieter than mainland and Soho is only a short walk away for bars and restaurants. The immediate area surrounding the hotel is dead […] but the hotel is 25 mins walk from the ferry terminal, and less to the metro / airport express link. The walk back is mostly uphill however and HK is not pedestrian friendly. Don't let your girlfriend walk it in floppy shoes if she moans as much as mine does. Overall no real problems, but nothing to make us go back there other than if there was another cheap deal. Read more

"Garden View - YWCA"
Very well located...clean and well maintained, a hotel we would recommend to anyone coming to HKG. One small criticism...a daily newspaper to the room would be a gracious touch, particularly since we were resident for a fortnight's stretch! :o(
"YWCA The Garden View"
Based on a 4-night stay: location great, walking distance to center/restaurant areas. Great view over nearest park. Room not luxurious, but no complaints. Overall: great value for money.
"Alarm!"
This hotel was as expected, basic but clean with friendly staff. Location is perfect away from city centre and only a $HK 20 approx €2 taxi into centre. Our last night we were awoken to a flashing alarm light in the room, no bell or siren. We got dressed and went down 10 flights of stairs to be told there was a water leak that had affected the electrics. […] Went back to bed only to have a note under the door in the morning to tell us there was no water available. The staff were very apologetic and I presume this was a one off leak which was just our bad luck. After all the above I would still stay here again. Read more
"YWCA The Garden View-Recommend"
The room has enough space to put all the luggages, better than normal HK hotels, which usually have small rooms. The experience of living here is good. Transportation to MTR is convenient through bus route 12A. I usually took 12A at Admiralty to the hotel, which is 20 meters to the hotel. 12A can also took you to Central. It is also near the Peak Tram […] Lower Terminus. If you are looking a quiet place, it is good. The only thing I'm not satisfied is the price, as it was X'mas season, I think the price was expensive. "Hotel YWCA was a quiet place to stay"
It was quiet and was convenient for us.

If you are looking for a cheap hotel close to central then this is for you. The roooms are clean and practical but small compared to other hotels in the area for slightly more money.

"YWCA Garden View Hong Kong- quiet and well-priced"
This hotel is about a 20-minute walk to the Central MTR station. Hong Kong is a wonderful city to wander around in by foot, but if the weather is disagreeable, this distance can be a bit inconvenient. Taxis, though, can get you to Hong Kong Station and the aiport rail in five minutes, for a very reasonable fare. The hotel staff was very helpful, aiding […] me in finding my way around Hong Kong. Aside from some carpet stains, the room itself was well-kept, clean, and very comfortable. Compared to other hotels in Hong Kong, the Garden View is definitely a good bargain for the price. Read more
"YWCA Garden View Hongkong"
The hotel has a good location. The room was a good size, keeping Hongkong spaces in mind, a decent bathroom, friendly check in staff and housekeeping staff. It served its purpose of being a good place to sleep at nite. Its a no frills hotel. The mattress wasnt too hard, was perfect for the back. Only thing which I didnt like was that no visitors are […] allowed after 11pm. If friends or family want to visit or chill, its not possible. otherwise its a good hotel, reasonable and cabs were easily available outside to travel on the island or go to a mtr station. recommended! "Garden View Hotel"
Excellent facilities, but situated in a very steep part of Hong Kong. We could walk down hill to the city centre, but a taxi was needed to get back. The room was excellent and the view from room was great. The restaraunt attached to the Hotel was very poor, both in selection of food and quality of food.

"Hotel near tram. Good location, nice rooms."
Good location, can go down to center walking. Way back is harder as it is steep. Nice room, not great but nice. Surroundings are good, zoo and tram very close. Recommendable for tourist.

"YWCA The Garden View - nice but not so convenient"
I was overall happy with my room and the nice park across the road, but the people at service desk were not overly helpful, after staying here for 5 days, on my last day, it was actually the security guy who advised me that there was a supermarket (a very well hidden one at that) just next door, he thought he'd tell me as he noticed that I was going […] to the small service station next door to get a few drinks and things from time to time... why didn't the service staff advise me of this upon check-in??? also, it's a bit out of the way and on a big hill so I got a lot of exercise walking to and from central... otherwise it's cheap to catch a taxi in HK... "The Garden View Hotel - extreme value for money"
10 minutes walk from e. g. Staunton street or 5th minutes with taxi but still one of the cheapest hotels in Hong Kong. Very nice clean rooms, not big but all you need if you use the room as a nice place to sleep. Nothing extra but extremely good value for money. I truly recommend this hotel. Mats
"Really nice service, good location"
I was really positively surprised with this hotel. Very pleasant service both upon arrival and checkout, hotel had good central location for me to explore around. Price-to-value was excellent for me.
"YWCA The Garden View, Hong Kong"
Hotel room was quite nice, and the staff were friendly. Although the hotel is a bit of a walk up from Central, it's not that long (took about 10-15 minutes to walk down, approx. 20 minutes to Star Ferry), and it's quite scenic, as you can walk through the HK Zoological Gardens. Hotel benefits from having a Fusion Park 'n Shop downstairs (HK supermarket), […] and also some good, cheap takeaways and restaurants next door as well. All in all, great choice of hotel for location and price, would highly recommend. Read more
"Great value for money in good location"
We liked the hotel very much and it was very handy for sightseeing and for getting down to the harbour for harbour tours etc. Also it is only 5 mins walk to the train station for the Peak visit, which was very nice!! One negative point is that you need to request WESTERN beds when booking.... we had very hard Chinese mattresses, and we requested another […] matress to put on top. This helped a bit, but did not make sleep any easier really. Read more
