The main ups of this hotel are its excellent location, relatively good rates (at least when I stayed there), and decent cleanliness. The staff were also quite helpful with maps and directions. In terms of cleanliness, the bathroom (which is what I'm most fussy about) was well kept. Some of the walls in the bedroom had stains and marks on them. Perhaps […] the cynic would argue that if they don't maintain that, what does it say about the stains you can't see? My only other big issue was that my shower's drain didn't work properly. This meant I could shower for about 90 seconds, at which point I'd have to turn the faucet off to drain for five minutes. Read more

Excellent bathroom, esp. compared to most middle-range Euro hotels. Bathroom well lit, mostly good facilities. Reasonably quiet, esp. when considering its prime location in old part of city where most of the action is. Very convenient for restaurants, shops, sites, and metro. In a wonderful location for the tourist who wants to walk around and explore some of the more interesting parts of Lyon The rooms are decent and clean. The staff are mostly polite and friendly; one woman (of about 4 front desk staff encountered) who was there some nights did not have a particularly friendly or helpful disposition. The lift works […] but is super slow. Its old and is fine if you are not impatient. Walking the many flights is a good workout. For the business traveler who intends on getting some work done, try another hotel since the wifi was very poor and kept dropping out or not working. It was also not particularly fast when working. One of the receptionists was not very helpful and very anxious.The other was extremely helpful and pleasant---coudn't do enough. Very friendly and accomodating staff. Lovely quiet room even though in the front of the hotel. Room was large by European standards. This was our second stay there and would go back again as it is also very conveniently located.

We spent one night at Hotel des Artistes and it was fine. The walls are a bit thin, but the guests were pretty quiet and the windows are soundproof. The hotel is lovely, the room was large and comfortable, and the location by the river and the square were perfect for us. We just wished we could have spent a week there!

The hotel is in a great location, as it was an easy walk to old Lyon. We enjoyed having the farmer's market very near the hotel (in the mornings) to get some tasty foods.

it is a decent hotel, but what made the hotel great and awful was the service. i called for directions and the woman who answered the phone and subsequently greeted me was absolutely great! she was helpful, engaging, friendly and everything you dream to encounter when coming to a foreign city. the woman on duty after her could not have been more opposite. […] she was inexplicably extremely rude to me. when i thanked her in french, she didn't say a word. when i asked for the key (in french) and hold out my hand, she would just drop it on the counter and go back to ignoring me. yet, she was chatty and engaging with other patrons. i was offended and thought it might be a race issue, but i also her engage other races. very off-putting. as much as i loved the first women, the second insured i would never stay there again. pity. It was nice and staff was attentive, but hotel needs to advise that a/c not turned on till later in May, regardless of how hot it is. Our stay was hot, so we had to open windows onto the main street which was extremely noisy. Not a pleasant experience.

My daughter and I stayed at Hotel des Artistes in March 2012 and had a wonderful experience. In addition to it's central location, comfortable rooms, Nicholas, at the front desk, was most helpful. I would stay there again!

The hotel room was good - the staff was unwelcoming, actually quite rude on Friday night - we didn't get any details of the services the hotel offered and the front desk man couldn't have given us less of a welcome unless he had turned us away - maybe we were interrupting his reading. The wifi did not work at all, despite their promises to fix it. The […] hotel elevator didn't work for the second day of our stay - good exercise if you are trekking up and down to a room on the fourth floor, but again they promised to fix it. The location was good for us, across the river from Vieux Lyon, but we would NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL. Read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel in Lyon. It was not old and worn down feeling like so many hotels in France can be, at this price point. The bedding was just right, the room was clean, and the bathroom was fresh and clean. The staff were constantly nice, friendly, cheerful. Such a nice contrast. I would gladly stay again.

This was a nice hotel! It's right near the downtown area, very reasonably priced, and the staff do a good job of keeping the place well kept and clean. The people that work there are nice and helpful too (and English speaking!). By US standards the rooms are small, but nothing you wouldn't see anywhere else in Europe.

I enjoyed the hotel and would stay there again. The rooms are small, but the location is so wonderful that it didn't really matter. Very clean and well maintained. I loved the beautiful theater across the street where you can sit on benches and people watch. You are in walking distance to everything. Great hotel.

This hotel is right down the street from the water! On the weekend there is a market that is absolutely outstanding. We actually shopped at the market for breakfast! There are many restaurants in the area and only a 10 minute walk from the train station which was our main source of travel. This hotel is in an excellent location being near the Old Town and also near the shopping areas of the newer town. The room we had was immaculate although quite small. What was difficult was trying to find it using GPS while driving in on a rainy weekend day, with political demonstrations/parades and road construction as well as closed bridges and full […] parking lots. Des Artistes is ideally located for visitors to Lyon. Within walking distance for many historic and cultural sites plus a short walk to Lyon's outstanding for access other destinations within Lyon. Lots of excellent restaurants and shops nearby. The hotel itself is fine and would recomend it to everyone. Only downside is their WiFi - be sure to book […] a room on a lower floor if you want to use their Wifi; the signal did not make it to the 5th floor so I had to use their breakfast room. Read more

I thought this was a really nice hotel. My room overlooked the theatre and plaza. The room was decorated nicely and had probably been recently updated. The location was fantastic...a block away from the Saone river and directly across from the beautiful Fourviere hill. There were also a lot of great restaurants to choose from.

Check in was easy and the front desk recommended a decent restaurant for lunch. The location was also pretty convenient. It was only a short walk to many restaurants and Vieux Lyon. The room was a decent size and the shower was nice. My only complaint, but a big one, is about the security. I was not asked for ID upon check in and you leave your room […] key with the front desk when you leave. They never ask for your ID when you come back to ask for your key and the front desk attendants change frequently. How do they keep track of who is getting access to your room. In fact, my husband, who doesn't share a last name with me, showed up separately from me and they just gave him the key while I was out. He could have been a stranger! Read more

The Hotel des Artistes was what I expected. It was a very neat clean small comfortable room with a great location. The staff was helpful and for the most part very friendly. It was recently renovated which made it quite nice. For the three nights that I was in Lyon in was perfect. It was also quite which was important for a business traveller.

Hotel des Artistes is located right on Place Celestins which is a lovely square in a great neighborhood and within walking distance of all the major sights in Lyon. We parked our rental car in the Place Bellecour, left it there and walked everywhere (note parking fees are expensive at 24 euros/24 hrs set by city. A great hotel close to everything. Restaurants all around, shopping, and tourist sites only short walks away. 5 minutes across the river from the old town. The standard room was a decent size with a comfortable bed and a great walk in shower. Staff was friendly and helpful.

It was a good experience overall. My only complaint was that the written description said that all the rooms had a view of the Square. I had a window looking into an interior window well. When I asked to change, as the hotel wasn't full, they wouldn't.

I stayed only one night but was impressed by the very helpful receptionist and the bright and well presented hotel. The location, a short walk to the Bonaparte bridge and the old town highlights, is ideal. I would certainly stay again. Rooms are smallish but spotless.

This is a comfortable, good value, hotel with generally very friendly staff. Our 'classic' room though fairly small was restful and well equipped with a good bathroom and an excellent bed. The hotel has a pleasant, welcoming entrance. Breakfast is good though we found better value in a neighbouring restaurant. The best thing about the hotel is its position […] in a delightful square in central Lyon, handy for everything yet mostly very quiet. On the downside we couldn't make the air conditioning work - our fault perhaps but there were no instructions; and there was one consistently surly and unhelpful receptionist on every day from early afternoon. The reception lacked common courtesy, when one arrives bonjour is a standard welcome this was absent. The room we were given 105 was enclosed , we did request a room change and this was acknowledged.
