This is not your "Little English Hotel" that you would think of in London. It is run by Islamic and the only thing English is the breakfast which was a pleasant surprise. The hotel is old and a maze of hallways and steep stairs. No elevator so with our 4 bags it was a struggle. The room was nice sized but old and drafty and the heater had a hard time […] keeping up. There was a large halogen light on at night just outside our window that lit up the room like daytime. Some of the staff were very nice, although it was the cultural rudeness that was disturbing. As was the area, very scary and the shopkeepers that were not English wanted to rip you off at every turn. Would not reccomend any of the stores. The television got infrequent reception. The bedding appeared grimy around the edges and the pillow was so flat and hard that sleeping on it was very difficult. The room was adjacent to the court yard which is noisy at night. The automatic shower controls alternated the water temperature between freezing and scalding. I was not sure what to expect when I booked this hotel. The reviews were mixed. I'm happy to say that our stay was a good one. We stayed there 8 days and were quite happy. Everyone who works there is very helpful and nice. Anything we needed, they were more than happy to provide - extra pillows, a hairdryer, a taxi reservation - they were all more than […] willing to help. The smoke alarm went off one night but that was because people were smoking and weren't supposed to be. We had four people in one room and had plenty of room. The breakfast provided is a traditional English breakfast but you didn't have to order the whole thing. You could just get eggs if that's all you wanted. There was also cereal, juice, fruit, amongst other items. We did not go hungry! The neighborhood was great! Every store we stopped in, we were greeted with helpful, good-natured people. We walked through the town at various times of the day and did not feel unsafe. Some of the stores closed earlier than expected, about 6 or 7 p.m., but that seems to be something that happens in England. The train station was about a 10 minute walk away and was easy to find. If I have anything negative to say it would only be that there were no laundry facilities on-site and that the hotel needs some updating, but if you want a decent place to stay and you're on a budget, this is a good choice. I had to find a last minute hotel room for my student son in London whose regular accomodation was unexpectedly unavailable for one night. I booked him at the Cranbrook Hotel because it was very good value and, as it was only one night, it seemed adequate. Here's my son's feedback: "Hey thankyou for the room last night, it was absolutely fine, very […] clean and tidy. It was a bit far from the center of the city but a train took me there very quickly. " Based on his experience, he would recommend it to young people in similar circustances or people looking for clean, basic accomodation during a short stay in London and not exepecting anything beyond that. I would recomend it to parents in similar circustances to ours (though, of course, I haven't actually seem the accomodation). My son also mentioned that the staff were extremely welcoming and polite. It was a nice hotel. It was clean. It had nice staff. A railstation was close to it what was convenient but still it is like 30 minute to downtown London.The building its kind of old and there are things that can be improved like the bathroom. There's no lift so it's better if you travel light. The neighborhood was nice and seemed pretty safe.

The hotel itself is in a very old, unstable building, so one can have the feeling of getting down. We booked a double room, which was 12q^2, extremely small and really dirty. I was shocked how old the double bed was, which wasn't by the way big enough for two adults. But the worse thing was the noise there. Couple of guests were been hitting hard the doors till early in the morning and the hotel personnel wasn't bothered by the fact. so coming to the personnel, the people working there are everything else than polite or friendly. it was okay for one night staff not helpful following break in of our van it was supposed to be a secure car park when asked to look at cctv fobbed off we were not warned about theft problems from cars. they noticed van broke into at midnight but no one informed us we had to find it open next morning .never again

Booked this place for 4 days, 3 nights and was pleased with it. The location is a bit far from the center. You have to take the underground and bus about and hour to the center. Not a good place to stay if your departing flight is early because local transportation is not running that late/early. We had a flight at 6:55 and had to leave around 23:00 […] the day before to make sure we dont miss our flight to Gatwick Airport. Other than than, wasnt so bad. I give a five star rating to the friendliness and the helpfulness of the staff. The breakfast was good too, though having turkey instead of bacon on a full english seemed a bit strange, however you only had a 2 hour slot to have breakfast, beginning at 6.30. One morning we didn't even have breakfast because there were more people than seating and we […] all had to queue to get into the breakfast room. The housekeeping came too early, and one morning they didn't even knock - they just came right into the room! We had to boil the kettle on the floor because the cord didn't reach the dresser. It was warm in our room and we couldn't open a window because the window was replaced by an alarmed fire exit door (the fire exit was for the whole floor by the way...). The bathroom looked like it had been redecorated recently though a lot of the grouting in the tiles were missing and a couple were cracked and moved under your feet while you walked on them. The shower was fine and the beds were clean and reasonably comfortable, the Wifi seemed to work fine too. It's close to the main stree that had lots of shops but tucked away enough that you didn't have to hear it. It is also close to Ilford train station too. Read more

We booked this hotel, at great expense at short notice due to the Olympics, and then reading some of the reviews began to regret this decision. But it was non-refundable, we'd just have to see how it turned out. I'd phoned the hotel in advance to let them know we would be arriving late (11.30pm or so), and they said that was fine. When we actually arrived, […] then they were indeed expecting us, and we were checked in quickly (£20 key deposit required, however) and then shown to our room. Our room, incidentally, was in a separate building across the road. The hotel felt like it hadn't been updated in about 40 years, but our room was clean, and the bathroom appeared to have been renovated recently. Shower pressure was fine (something a few people have complained about in reviews). Breakfast was reasonable, although it left a funny feeling in our stomachs for a while! It looks like this hotel usually goes for a much lower price than what we paid. For the money we paid, the hotel was in no way worth it - but it was at least a clean place to stay, and was only a short walk away from Ilford railway station - where you can pick up a direct train to the Olympic Park, the main reason we picked it. At the cheaper rate that seems to be showing up later in the year, the hotel would seem much more acceptable. Can't blame the management for wanting to cash in on the Olympics I suppose! Read more

the hotel room was very clean, and quiet, but extremely small. Only 15 minutes to london by the train. According to their ad, there was a phone in every room, and to call "0" for anything from a wakeup call to an emergency. There was no phone, hard to dial "0" without a phone. In addition the room is in a seperate building from the reception area. In […] an emergency or any other reception issue you need to go downstairs, outside, across the road to the reception area. We were told that if we had a phone number they were quite willing to dial the number for us, but there would have been no privacy for a private phone call. The ad did say that there was wifi, and there was but it was on a computer in their waiting room and you had to pay for it. there is no banister on the staircase, coming down the stairs, i was worried about falling. The staff was friendly, helpful, polite and informative. The breakfast was tasty but the hours of breakfast was inconvient for tourists, 7:30 - 8:30 during the week and until 9:30 am on weekends (better). The lack of phone in room and the wifi was disapointing and quite surprising that it was lacking. But overall it was an satisfactory stay. I would consider staying in the Cranbrook Hotel again. This place is kind of a scam: you get a free breakfast, but theres limited seating so you have to get there early unless you like waiting in line, its not an unlimited breakfast though it is filling, and the fruit (and i think the sausages and beans) is (are) canned. and this is probably the only redeeming feature of the hotel. Here's our unsettling story that makes this hotel one to dodge: during our stay, at around midnight, it sounded like someone from the staff marched up the stairs with keys and unlocked someone's room (which has no chain latch on the inside!!). he said "open the door. turn off the lights." My partner and I suspect there was a couple being intimate. It sounded like the guy in the room was hauled off somewhere. Also, we heard this so well because the walls are extremely thin. The bed wasnt the most comfortable, and you have to hold the shower head since it doesn't stay locked on to the holding mecanism when its turned on. Also the shower curtain doesn't cover the entire shower so you get water everywhere.... or maybe that wetness was due to the leaking sink which they promised would be fixed but never was. The only advantages to this place; cheap, near to a tube station (which is a 40 minute trip to the centre), neighbourhood is kind of interesting. I however, would shop around. The hotel is near the bus stops and main market where you can get almost everything. I would usually take a 20 min walk from the Gants Hill tube station, through the Valentine Park. It very very unplasant. I was given a box room instead of a double bed room. The room smelt of damp n it was not located on the hotel premises. I was told that I get normal tv channels but tv was not working. I was not able to complain to reception as I didn't have intercom or telephone in my room to talk to reception. Due to unfortunate short notice of a training course we required some accommodation and this was the ONLY hotel that could fit our dates. I wonder why. IT IS A COMPLETE DUMP! We were allocated a triple room in the attic (room 01) The door looked like it had been broken into, didn't lock properly and swayed on it's hinges. Underneath the single bed was […] a mouse box and on day two complete with contents! The wardrobe door was nailed shut on one side and bedside drawer didn't fit. Curtains didn't meet and the carpet was nailed to the floor with nails protruding.There were no duvet covers just a sheet on top and the double bed was back breaking. The bathroom? well. The toilet didn't flush properly and there was a hole in the shower base (not the plughole) The sealant around the shower was missing resulting in water dripping into the room below. For some reason the sink panel was nailed on insecurely. There were tea making facilities but the flex from the kettle was so short the kettle had to be placed on the floor. Information indicated help could be obtained by dialling 0 but there was no telephone. Wall decoration is made up of pieces of grotty carpet, the same as on the floor. At least it's matching!! THE PLACE IS TOTALLY OUTDATED. The Asian owners were pleasant when dealing with us but the Irish woman was extremely rude. We didn't dare risk breakfast and left 2 days early There are so many Health & Safety and Environmental issues here it should be pulled down!!!!! Read more

We got room nr. 20, a shed outside the main hotelbuilding. There was hardly any space to move around. They tried to give it potential to add a watercooker and littel tv, but it was to shabby to cover it up. It remembered me of my old studenthome, so that's not a very good sign. The bathroom included a toilet (without a toiletbrush) which was also tiny. […] The 2pers-bed was in the category terrible. The frontdoor had a crappy lock and the gate tot the main street couldn't be locked. To be 'save' we put another bed in front of the door during the night, you never know. Breakfast was ok, no complains about that. It annoyed us bigtime that while checking out the guy at the receptiondesk didn't ask anything about our stay, without a word he just returned our key-money. Because of the price we did not expect anything up market. The Hotel seemed at the time to be clean a little old fashioned and 'tired' decoration. The breakfast was good and filling. The room was adequate apart from the mattress which you could feel the springs through and made it a little uncomfortable. We were woken in the early hours of the morning […] to a scratching and knawing sound. When my Husband got up and disturbed a carrier bag a mouse ran right under the bed. When we looked where it had gone there was a poison trap laid under the bed. I went to complain and the receptionist did not seem at all concerned. We had asked for an early morning call at 5.45am and asked if we could have something for breakfast to which we were told it would just be bread and butter, which was fine. We didn't get our early morning call as the receptionist said he was 'busy' and the dining room was closed. When I asked about the kitchen I was told that they had just started coming in and wasn't ready. Unfortunately this hotel really went down in my estimation on the last night when all this happened. We stayed at Cranbrook Hotel for 3 nights in a familiy room (2 adults & 2 kids). Hotel location was pretty good, Ilford Railway station is a 5 minute walk away. Gants Hill Tube station (Central Line) is a 5 minute bus ride away. The hotel itself is very basic and a little run-down. But it is still okay with clean rooms and comfy beds. When we got to the hotel, we were at the top floor without a lift. I have a heart condition so I was not too happy about going up 3 flights of stairs.
