"Decent, Not Luxurious"

We had 10 day Fall trip through Connecticut and the surrounding areas. During our vacation, we stayed at hotels ranging in price from $85 to the maximum of $295 at the Breadloaf Lodge. We were quite surprised at the lack of luxury on arrival to our cabin, based on the price and the website advertising. In fact, it was the least luxurious of all the places we stayed during out travels. Only the shower could be called luxurious. The towels in the bathroom were from Target and JCPenney. The overhead beams are very nice, but the finishing on the walls is very basic. Only the most basic essentials are supplied in the kitchen. It was originally set up for a built in refrigerator, but a smaller refrigerator was used instead leaving a gaping hole at the top. The website states "All five cottages have been thoughtfully decorated by an interior designer........" Really? Really! All the furniture looks like it was purchased based on what happened to be on sale that day and it boggles the mind to think that a decorator may have been involved (see the traveler photos). The restaurant on the property has been boarded up and makes an unsightly welcome as you drive up. A discarded couch and other junk is nestled between the restaurant and other buildings. Some of the handrails on the outside grounds are loose and in need of repair. A previous reviewer wrote "The comforts of the cottage by very far exceed a tent......." Well, I can't argue with that, but I expected much more based on the premium pricing. The property is currently up for sale and so I doubt that the owner is interested in putting more money in to the property. The cabin was clean. Really, the only thing wrong with the cabin was the price. Competitively priced at $100-$125 a night I would have no qualms about staying here.

Wonderful location and had everything WE we're looking for: quiet, cozy and well kept cottages. The owner Marty was a wonderful host and had the cottage all warmed up before our arrival and met us at the door. Lots of excellent recommendations for hiking, sight seeing and local restaurants. We would definitely stay there again! Thanks Marty!

This is a great spot - right across from a state park and on the Housatonic River. The cottages are not rustic but well maintained and well appointed: high ceilings, lovely bathroom, exposed beams, nice livingroom and kitchen area, a screened-in sleeping porch. It is a great location to get to many wonderful spots in nature and to great restaurants. The owner, Marty, is a great, down-to-earth guy. And be sure to do a fly-fishing lesson with him. He is a true expert. So much fun to get in that river.
"Friendly, cozy and relaxing"

We stayed in the Dogwood cottage for two nights during a trip through new england. The cabins were even better than the pictures on the website. Everything was clean and better yet everything worked. The bed was very comfortable and we were able to relax in the living room while watching a movie on the flat screen. Marty, the owner, went out of his way to make our stay comfortable and had great suggestions for dining around the area or things to do. I would recommend Breadloaf Mountain Lodge to anyone that is spending time in the area.
"Cozy, relaxing, quiet cabins, excellent renovation"

My husband and I stayed in a cabin for a winter weekend escape from NYC and it was just what the doctor ordered. Everything about the cabin renovation was excellent and designed to provide a comfortable, relaxing, pampered feel. It was nice to have a kitchen for being lazy in the morning and fixing our own breakfast and coffee. Getting a code for your room door lock in advance was a nice touch, no need to find the innkeeper to get your key. The Inn is in a nice spot, right across from the river and a nice park with picnic tables. The cabins are a good value for the money. We will definitely come back.

We stayed in Marty's cottage as a half way break on our trek along the Connecticut Appalachian Trail section. The comforts of the cottage by very far exceed a tent and make it easier to escape the mosquitoes. As we could afford it, it was much better than the nearby Hitching Post. Our choice was right, we sheltered from rain, high humidity, voracious bugs and we experienced the hospitality of outdoorsman Marty. Marty will be presented for service but never in the way. He can share a lot about the area and even provide a shuttle ride. The cottage has a screened veranda, barbeque, spacious seating room, full bath~ and bedroom. Everything in the cottage was functional and in great condition, including the heated bathroom floor tiles. We purchased breakfast, lunch and dinner from the nearby general store (must visit to support the new owners!). The refrigerator helped to store and microwave to prepare the food. It was too wet to cook outside, barbeque included. The cottage style set-up allow for a quiet and comfortable stay.
"Very clean, quite and peaceful with excellent rooms and staff."

This stop was mid-way on our trip from Boston to NYC. We had a two-room cabin with a screened porch. It was very clean and enjoyable. Ideally located across the street from a park and the Housatonic River. The owner has a fly fishing shop and guide service which added to the enjoyment. An all-inclusive, guided fishing trip was included in our package. I am sorry we didn't make arrangements to stay there longer and look forward to returning.
"Perfect All Around"

We just visited Breadloaf Mountain Lodge for a girls weekend to celebrate my sister's 40th birthday. We stayed in the Oak/Acorn cottage which accomodated all of us. We couldn't get over the Pottery Barn style decorating and loved hearing how they were built by the owner with reclaimed wood, etc. The heated floors in the bathrooms were such a treat when we woke up on the chilly mornings. Having our own little kitchen was great too. We were able to enjoy wine and beer while chatting in our own living room and getting ready for dinner. The rooms were comfortable, clean, and spacious. The only thing lacking was a full length mirror. I felt like I was in a "Folgers" commercial all wrapped up in a blanket, drinking my coffee, and rocking in an adirondack chair. I watched the clouds disappear and the sun rise over the mountain ridge just over the housatonic river rushing before me. Could it get any better then this I thought? The answer was yes!! The entire Litchfield Hills area and corner of northwestern connecticut is gorgeous. Each town and country road as beautiful as the next. In just two days we visited a vineyard, orchard, spa, covered bridge, waterfalls, antique shops, fabulous general store, three amazing restaurants, took in breathtaking scenery, and still had time to relax and be silly. Marty, the owner of the Breadloaf lodge and cottages, was friendly and accomodating. He recommended each place at which we dined and made the reservations for us. There were no disappointments. Marty helped us with directions and suggested places to visit. I can't wait to take my husband back to enjoy the flyfishing offered on site. As a seasoned traveler of the east coast I was surprised I hadn't heard of or visited this area before. I can't wait to go back and will definetely stay at breadloaf again.
"Very nice cottage, friendly service and great location."

We stayed 2 nights in one of the cottages, and it was a good experience. The cottage could use more windows / daylight, apart from that everything was fine. The cottage itself and the surrounding area were in very nice condition, and just across the road you find the Housatonic River and great places for picnic or a walk. The staff was friendly and was able to answer all our questions, etc. Will not hesitate to visit again.
"Great place to get away and relax with friends in a quiet, cozy atmosphere"

Members from our chapter of Trout Unlimited have been coming to Breadloaf Mountain Lodge & Cottages for several years. The natural setting in the Cornwall Bridge area is particularly beautiful. We enjoy the lodge because it can accommodate our group comfortably. It offers a full kitchen with dishes and cooking facilities, a large dining area where we can share meals, and a very nice living room with fireplace and flat screen TV where we can relax, watch a ball game, and recall a day of fishing. Bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and spacious. If you like to fish, there are plenty of great pools and runs well within walking distance of the lodge, and others are within a mile or so. There are fine fly shops and plenty of excellent restaurants in the area. Fish are plentiful and Marty, the owner, is very helpful when it comes to sharing his knowledge of fishing and things to do in the area. Our members always look forward to returning to this lodge.
