Not worth the money I've paid for. Small rooms, even smaller ensuite showers with barely no space to move inside and only one tiny mirror light. Furniture was old and almost falling apart. Door handle to the shower was hanging by a thread. The tv was from the eighties and it didn't even had a remote.

Room was rather shabby but acceptable - we were at the back of the building adjacent to the main hotel so actually had 2 rooms. I slept badly as there was a very brigh security light next to the wndow and a lot of noise from the room next door - this may have been from another hotel though. Good breakfast.

we enjoyed our stay at the holgate it does need updating a bit but the staff were excellent and friendly.we were only in york for 1 day for the races but it was only about a mile to the course from the hotel and around a mile into the centre of york so was a good location. we would definatly stay there again if in the area.

A cosy and friendly old style hotel with excellent freshly cooked breakfast. Quite elegant if a little faded! Cose to city centre (even walking). My room slightly cramped with twin beds and en suite a little dated but my friends room had modernised en suite. Dinner menu very reasonable though we ate out. Overall very comfortable and excellent friendly service.

The hotel whilst extremely welcoming, warm and friendly, is very outdated in terms of decoration. The rooms especially are in dire need of a complete overhaul. The bedding is in blanket form, the shower & toilet are decorated from the 70's, the walls, carpets and curtains although clean were desperately in need of refreshment. That said, the staff more than compensate for the dated surroundings with thier warm attitude.

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted lukewarmly by the lady on the desk. I had reserved a twin room and both my sons and one girlfriend were with me when I arrived. She questioned who the others were and did not seem pleased that they were there. She then proceeded to tell me that the hotel had a disco that night until midnight. Now usually I don't go to be too early but the disco was right underneath our room, there was no noise reduction at all and I had a 12 year old staying with me (which they knew from the booking). I think something could have been on the booking form or the disco room should have been away from guest bedrooms so that travellers could get rest if they so wished. We were tired and had a big day the on the Sunday and a good night's rest and peace would have been helpful, not to mention a smile when we arrived.

The hotel was quaint, comfortable and well located. The staff were friendly and helpful and there was a cooked breakfast included as well as a cereal and fruit buffet. The only complaint I would have was that, being there in December, the room was quite cold as the windows weren't double glazed. Saying that, it was good value for money overall.

This hotel is fine for a base to see York from for a short time. It's a 15 min walk into the centre. The staff are really nice, the breakfast was good but the decor is outdated and a bit shabby. Apart from that though the bed was comfortable and the shower powerful - so what more do you need? Honestly reading some of the reviews of this place made me dread my stay, but I though it was okay - you know?

The hotel has a charming Granny's homely house feel to it, with very friendly staff and is in a comfortable walking distance from the old city center. Only negative thing I could discover is the fact that some electrical equipment weren't quite up-to-date, but in perfect working condition though.
