It was authentic with beautiful decorated rooms and two inner courtyards and one rooftop deck which were spectacular. What a relaxing place to come back to after a hectic day of sightseeing. I traveled to Beijing for business, and wanted to experience something other than the usual business hotels -- which are pretty much the same the world over. This hotel is located in one of the remaining old neighborhoods ("hutong") inside the 2nd ring road of Beijing, many of which have been lost to development, especially in the run-up to the 2008 […] Olympics. Some might consider the approach on Dongsi Sitiao Alley to be seedy by western standards, but it is safe. It also seems to be in a state of in-place modification and renewal. The walk to the Dongsi subway station is easy, and the walk to the central Beijing sites (e.g., Forbidden Palace) is fine for people who like to walk. The hotel staff was great and very helpful, and had good command of English (not common). They arranged for me to join a tour of the Great Wall and provided early carry-out breakfasts on the two days on which I had to leave before the regular breakfast was available (7 am). The regular breakfast spread, by the way, was very good. The bar was a pleasant spot for a beer, and the one dinner I had there was authentic and tasty. The rooms are basic, nicely appointed and very clean, and the courtyard, a key element of the hutong house, is pleasant. But you don't come to Beijing to hang around your hotel room. My only complaint is that the wifi, while providing a good signal, had low bandwidth, often under 1 kB/s. Trying to use it was very frustrating. I would definitely stay here again. Read more

When we first got to the hotel I was quite upset. It was in an alley, not conducive to walking around. Once the sun came up and I realized that I was in real life China, I was much happier. It was a five minute walk to the main street. Taxi's were easily available from the hotel desk, the subway was only about a 7 minute walk and once you got there […] it was an easy trip to any of the sights you would want to see. The rooms were were comfortable and quaint. Each room was set off a courtyard and was very much the old chinese architecture it promised to be. The rooms were decorated in period chinese decor. There was a small, homey restaurant bar in the hotel, with very firendly waitresses and bar tender. The reception staff could not have been nicer. If you are looking for a business hotel or a five star hotel this is not the place for you. If you want a cultural experience you could not do better. Read more

We had the best ending for our Asian trip by staying at the Double Happiness Hotel in a Hutong! Everyone was so gracious! Our rooms were plenty large. They had upgraded us to a Family room and it was wonderful. We had a free internet in our room, in fact, all rooms had this. The courtyard was at our door and we enjoyed having family time there and planning […] our days. You had to almost make the Taxis take you to the door, but since, I was old and limping, I had no problems with this. The highlight of my Asian trip was getting up on the Great Wall. It is something that will always stay with me. We used Grayline tours for our pick up at the airport and the day tour to the wall. Jessica was wonderful. We think everyone should have this experience of staying in a hutong! We highly recommend Double Happiness. They seemed happy to let us out at 4 AM to meet the van to take us to the airport. Loved the authenticity of this hotel. Certainly not a Hilton or Sheraton but was very expensive for what you got. Nice bathroom and beds were comfortable. The food was good but took forever to get. Was not as close to the Forbidden City as was lead to believe but since we used a private driver for the day it worked out.

Was impressed. Stayed 8 days in March, in the smallest room. Staff apologized on arrival for malfunctioning central heating. It seemed ok to me. Along with the heat function on the A/C unit, had no trouble keeping the room warm during sub-zero nights (but possibly larger rooms would not be kept warm by just the same A/C unit.) Building is old (the point, […] of course), but the room was well-updated. Clean, well-decorated and appointed. No shortage of hot water. In-room safe. Staff were cheerful, friendly, and helpful. I had little difficulty understanding anyone's English. None of the obvious 'I'd rather be somewhere else' attitude common in that type of job. So much so I assumed while I was there they must be relatively well-paid. Even the morning cleaning staff were smiling and friendly (and literally running from place to place). Check the lock on the room door-knob. Mine was very easy to 'jimmy' open from outside the room. I reported this en route to breakfast, and they were installing a new door knob by the time I returned from breakfast. Breakfast was consistently good. Some have complained of the lack of variety. Yes, it's the same food every morning, but it's just about every type of food you could want for breakfast, and all you could eat. For the budget-conscious, you could make breakfast the main meal of the day. Location very convenient. Wall tour through them was fine (go to Jinshanling - far, far fewer people on the wall). It is about 1/4 mile from subway so it was convenient for us to go to nearby sites, Silk Market, Temple of Heaven, Tianamen Square and Forbidden City. When I was lost and could not find the hotel, after one phone call to them they sent the hotel's rickshaw and rider to pick me up within 20 mins. The staff are all excellent, friendly, informative with very good english language skills. They have lots of helpful local knowledge, and great tours available at the desk at a reaonable price. To get there, goto Dongsi Metro station, and leave via Exit B. Go diagonally across the little carpark, turn right down the main street and the Dongsitiato Hutong ( alleyway ) is about 500 yards. Turn right down Donsitiato hutong, and the hotel is about 600 yards down the alleyway, near the police station.
