No lift very bad stairs. Walls of the room are dirty. No breakfast service. Help yourself bread butter jelly coffe machine. I will not go again. Bad experience.

Although the rooms are small even by European standards- we had a great stay. Beautiful canal view, short walk to everything! Felt very safe in neighborhood, very close to Centraal Station. I really enjoyed this hotel; as the name suggests it is fairly basic, but I found it to be well maintained, comfortable, and in an ideal part of town which is safer and less rowdy than other neighborhoods. The room was equipped with a hairdryer and soap, and the bed was comfortable. It being in an old building, there is no elevator and a VERY steep staircase going up to the rooms. This was neither a surprise nor a problem for me, but could be for other travelers -- I would not try to haul a large suitcase or a baby up there, for instance. The wi-fi signal was weak in the room, but worked intermittently and when it didn't, there's a computer downstairs for anyone to use. Overall I thought it was a great deal, and I would stay again. I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem. The location is in a residential area that is nice and quiet. You've got about a 10 minute walk to the train station which was great. Very pleased. Our room was under renovation and not very polished but was still cozy and clean.

The hotel itself is great and it and the room were modern and clean, and the room I had was larger than most in Amsterdam and I felt a good deal for the price. No complaints about anything other than the toilet paper dispenser (single-ply tissue dispenser, but that seems to be par for the course for Amsterdam). I'd stay there again.

Some of the other areas in Amsterdam felt a little unsafe. 10hrs of free wifi in your room, otherwise a computer to use in the lobby. Free coffee & water machines available 24/7. I booked a medium sized modern room and was "upgraded" to a large sized traditional room because of plumbing problems in my original room. I appreciated being upgraded to a larger room, but it was more like a college dorm room than what I consider traditional... the modern decorations in the pictures is what drew me to this hotel in the first place, […] so that was a bummer. Beds were comfortable. Room was clean for the most part, but needs an upgrade. Front desk staff were all helpful, especially the gentleman who checked me in... he carried my heavy suitcase up the STEEP steps without being asked! Location of hotel was very convenient... very close walking distance to Central Station, Anne Frank house, restaurants (most stop serving at 10PM btw, no exceptions - very frustrating!), coffeeshops and several other sites. This was a great little hotel in a great location. I spent 3 days in Amsterdam on vacation, and I was able to walk everywhere, even to the Rijksmuseum. I was a bit apprehensive about the hotel since I had typically stayed at much more expensive, U.S. based big chain hotels. My first experience in a Dutch hotel was definitely worthy of another try. Overall this is an adequate hotel: clean, well-kept, safe, and closely managed. The hotel is a converted property (two side by side structures), built long ago as something else. Luckily it's small place that didn't have a rowdy clientele, at least during my stay, so while sounds carried and doors offered no acoustic insutlation, the place was generally […] quiet. The hotel has a 24-hour reception desk next to the front door, which is locked at night or when the receptionist leaves the desk. My room was wierd, and the receptionist who helped me with my bag to my room tipped me off, but I failed to realize it at the time. She showed me to my room and left very abruptly. When I looked for my bathroom, It was down a spiral case to room with a 7-foot ceiling. I almost asked for a different room, but had already unpacked and was tired from a trans-Atlantic flight. The room had two stools but no chair with back, and this was a drag. The bed was comfortable. The room had only a small window located near the ceiling above the stairwell to the bathroom. Maid service was competent. The hotel's wi-fi was very sketchy. The connection quality in my room was poor and I got kicked off a lot. On my second, it failed completely and was not fully restored for two days. The hotel made some accommodations so that we could connect via a cable, but this was in the lobby only. The coffee, free and available almost anytime, is made fresh by the cup and is terrific. I For the price, it was a very reasonable value. Was it basic? Absolutely. Was it chic? No. A more accurate name would be Basic & Adequate. Read more

I have decided on this hotel after cancelling 2 other bookings and it turned out to be the best decision ever. I arrived just before 10am and although check-in time is 3pm they had my room ready which was great. Heating can be adjusted from your room and therefore no issues if you travel in the winter. Steep stairs though so if you have mobility issues I would recommend requesting a room on the ground floor. A friend and I stayed at Chic & Basic Amsterdam for a couple of nights in July 2012. We had the twin room in the attic at the back so lotsof stairs but the hotel is in a great location, lots of facilities and friendly, helpful staff. The weather was very warm during our visit and our room was rather hot although a room fan was provided.

The area was so peaceful The hotel rooms were so quirky , clean bathroom well appointed and beauutifully clean, with fresh white towels daily.
