"Very different, charming, unusual"
Gardens are quite special. Rooms are large and comfortable but not that well furnished. Restaurant was quite good. Service was attentive. I would give this an 8 out of 10.Genuine Expedia guest review
Lovely hotel. We were only there over night, but the service was nice. They had just put up the christmas decorations, so it was really cuteGenuine Expedia guest review
"What a let down"
I lived in San Jose for years and moved in 2010. When I went back in December for vacation I wanted to stay here as I used to eat at the restaurant frequently. The restaurant is still fabulous but the hotel was dismal. The whole room needed upgrades and tlc.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Reading guest reviews is a 'must do' before booking any hotels in CR"
We stayed here for 3 nights when we first arrived in Costa Rica. The staff were very friendly & the breakfast was good, unfortunately we never ate dinner there because we got in late on our first night, the second night of our stay there was a wedding taking place and the third night we had other dinner plans. The room was very nice, clean and comfortable […] (all the beds in Costa Rica could use some improvement). We would have gone back except we wanted to try another area of the city before going home, this was definitely one of the nicer hotels we stayed in while travelling around CR. "Do not eat here"

The hotel itself was ok, just ok, it is away from everything, not the cleanest place. Do not eat here, me an my wife both got salmonella/food poisoning. On the trip plan, it stated this place was a "gourmet breakfast", you kidding me. The size of one scrambled egg, rice and beans, a tiny roll and coffee. No juice, no water, the waiter was the maintenance man, with his work clothes on. Don't let this review stop you from Costa Rica, our other hotels and different cities were fantastic.
"Corteza AmarrilaLodge a great hotel"

I went to Costa Rica two weeks ago and I wish I could go back tomorrow. When I got to CR I wanted to feel like I was in CR, I did not wanted to stay in a hotel chain, I just wanted to enjoy Costa Rica to the max. Corteza Amarilla is a great, quiet, peaceful place. Connected with nature. Room was beautiful, clean and big, the bathroom, was the same. Sometimes you don't enjoy the hotels because of the excursions and other things, but her you just need to sit in the outside, in the patio with a glass of wine or a cold Imperial (local beer), and just listen the nature. The service was phenomenal, especially Donald, great person. When I go back CR, for sure in a future not too far, Ill stay there with no hesitation. "PURA VIDA"

When we got to the gate everything was dark. We thought oh no we have been ripped off so we drove around thinking there must be another entrance. We couldn't find one. When we went back to the gate within a minute or two a gentleman opened the gate for us. We drove in and parked. The man didn't ask us for reservations or anything as they knew we were coming. He took us directly to our room which was very nice. It was 11:30 at night so we went right to bed. When we woke up the next morning and looked out the window, we were in paradise. We had a huge picture window looking out on trees and foliage. The bathroom had a slanted window above the sink with trees etc. It was so nice. It is not a fancy like one person said "cookie cutter" establishment. It is very unique and has an amazing ambiance. I wish we could have stayed but we had breakfast an had to get on the road. We would love to go back.

Pros: The courtyard garden is peaceful and the hotel itself is like a work of art. The staff is so kind, the food is delicious and authentic Costa Rican. Our room was huge and the bed was super comfy. The bathrooms have incredible amounts of natural light and beautifully tiled counters. Ample parking for those with cars. Cons: The wifi was down while we were there (for 24 hours), making it difficult for us to check into our flight home. The rooms aren't very soundproof and we could hear our neighbors walking around on the creaky hardwood floors. The hotel is pretty far from downtown San Jose (it’s about a 20min drive with multiple tolls). The "spa" is an old hot tub that looks like it has been broken for about a year. Other than that, it’s a charming hotel with unique flare.

My husband and stayed for 1 night after flying in to San Jose for our first time to Costa Rica. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the rooms were very big. The grounds were beautiful and the artwork was unique and unusual. Our package included breakfast the next morning which consisted of fresh fruit, juice, coffee, eggs, rice and beans. It was the perfect start to our vacation. The only problem which we did not personally have, was that the couple we were traveling with had issues with their AC in their room. Our bathroom was very big but no AC and the door was left closed so when we arrived the bathroom was hot. Also the fan did not work unless the fan light was left on. Overall it was a wonderful experience and much better than staying at a cookie cutter hotel! Travel is about experiencing new things right?
"Close to the airport, funky place to stay, with lovely staff."

The service in this hotel was impeccable, our room comfortable and spacious. The decor was amazing and gives the hotel a special character and charm. The furniture individual and quirky, always something interesting to look at around the next corner. The garden was good to relax in on our last evening, knowing that we only had a short drive the next day. Evening meal : food was reasonable, but I ate the best passion fruit creme brûlée ever!
"Beautiful and eclectic"
Beautiful hotel! Art and colors everywhere which made all of our pictures so beautiful. The room is very big and so unique. Two double beds even though we would have preferred a king. Bathroom is big and gorgeous. Ate dinner at the restaurant and the food was wonderful. Great service and English speaking, which is helpful. We took a taxi to a nearby restaurant for lunch which was very inexpensive ride for great food. Definitely worth it. I would agree that it is not the best location but we are only staying for one night so we wanted to just stay here and enjoy the hotel anyway.

This hotel is really interesting - lots of art work and meandering paths through a beautiful garden. Our room was huge and very comfortable. The shower was amazing - almost a room! We had lunch and dinner at the hotel, and the food was outstanding. The location is not so great - nothing within walking distance.
"We will try another hotel next time"

We stayed here the first night in Costa Rica before we were heading to Sarapiqui. The hotel is colourful and ceatively decorated, and the staff are friendly and helped us to arrange transport to Sarapiqui the next day. We knew the hotel was a bit isolated, so we had decided to have lunch and dinner at the hotel restaurant. When we arrived at the hotel, we where told that dinner was until 22:00. The lunch was ok and they have a nice garden, although the traffic noise was noticeable. When arriving at the restaurant at 20:00, we were told that the restaurant would close at 21:00 that day. And when we asked for a bottle of red wine, the waiter told us that unfortunately they were sold out. But after a while he came back happy and told us that he fortunately had found a bottle of red wine in the kitchen. Our room had two ceiling fans and both where attached to the light. We asked the reception how to run the ceiling fans without the light at nightime, but she could not tell how to do it. So we had to remove four light bulbs in one of the ceiling vans to be able to sleep with van on!
"Quirky overnight stop pre or post flights from San Jose"

This is a quirky art lodge decorated with masses of decoupage and mosaic work crafted by the owner which gives it a unique feel. Nothing was ordinary. There's an eclectic mix of artwork, sculpture, ironwork and chandeliers that are exotic and flamboyant. I stayed for two nights, one post and the other pre-flight home. Both rooms were spacious (I stayed in 6&7), clean and restful, one with a super king bed & seating area, the other with 2 queen sized beds. I couldn't fault the bedding or the comfort of the beds. Good sized bathrooms with plenty of hot water and eco friendly toiletries although the towels could have been slightly bigger. The lush gardens are well maintained with plenty of seating areas to relax, both in sun and shade. Meals are served on the terrace of the hotel: breakfast is comprised of fresh fruit, gallo pinto, eggs, sweet rolls with conserve, washed down with plenty of coffee/tea. Lunch and dinner choices were good and very flavourful - follow the waiters' recommendations for drinks (whether soft or with alcohol) and you won't go wrong! However, the real draw of this hotel is the lovely personal welcome that the staff give you. I was greeted on my return like a long lost friend: reception and restaurant staff are charming and nothing is too much trouble. Do be aware that the lodge is sited fairly close to a main road and that some traffic noise is to be expected. Also, try to arrange a transfer from the airport with the hotel in advance - the 20 minute trip took me an hour and a half by local taxi simply because the driver wasn't familiar with the lodge!
