The Churchill Hotel - York

Very nice hotel in good location. But rarely anyone at front desk. Never answered phone. Wireless connection kept disappearing from one side of the room to the other. Save yourself the aggravation.

The Churchill Hotel is nice, but the new addition, where our room was, is too modern. We thought it would be more old-fashioned, because it's an old manor house. But the old part is limited to 8 luxury rooms that are probably lovely, but are above our price range.

The hotel is lovely, beautiful lobby. The room we stayed in was for two adults & two children. It was a nice size but the child was sleeping in a cot which was not very comfortable at all. The bathroom was huge, whomever designed it should of made the bathroom smaller so that the could put a full size sofa bed in the room. The lighting in the room is […] very dim and there's no internet except in the lobby where they have two desktop computers but only one of them worked and you needed a password from the receptionist to use it. Receptionist usually not at the desk. Overall it was clean and comfortable. It's about a ten minute walk to the center, the neighborhood seemed quite & safe but I don't know how comfortable I would be if I had to walk alone late at night. York is absolutely beautiful and charming and can easily be done in two nights. There's not much to see really but you'll get lost in it's charming streets. Stores close early and then there's not much to do except dinner and pubbing. Don't bother with the ghost tours they're horrible, a true tourist trap. Read more

We stayed here for two nights. The hotel itself is very pretty, very contemporary. I have a back condition and can't lift my luggage. There are steps up to the front door and to the elevator so be prepared to lift your own luggage cause the hotel doesn't provide assistance. The first day we came back from our outing and our room door was open. The cleaning person didn't shut it behind her. I also didn't expect something like this. Fortunately, we were in a corner room so not alot of foot traffic and nothing was taken. But it doesn't make it right. I complained to the front desk they just apologized but they couldn't really do anything since nothing happened. Also, the hotel is a decent distance away from the center of York but it is walkable. Beautiful hotel from the outside, updated modern furnishings on the inside. The room was nice--but not perfect. The tap in the bathroom was very loose and seemed about to fall off. The small tv screen was mounted on the wall in the far corner of the room from the bed. No big deal, but it might bother others a bit more. Free parking is nice. Free internet […] in the room (via an ethernet cable) was nice, but the cable the hotel supplied was only about 12" long which was a bit awkward. The best thing about the hotel is the close proximity to York center. It is about a 5 min walk to the Minster and other attractions. It is a beautiful building, clean and quiet. An exellent value. We enjoyed York and our 2 night stay at this hotel despite arriving in December in subzero conditions that are probably going to be remembered as "the great UK freeze of 2010". Everything in the country was operating erratically but not so the Churchill hotel which was running just fine. Our bed was comfortable, nice bathroom, and the heat in our Marrakesh […] room was quite adequate. This is definitely an eclectic hotel with a few idiosyncracies but if you want to get away from bland and predictable chain hotel service and have a different experience with a bit of character, the Churchill delivers. The staff were very friendly and Dave on the front desk was incredibly informative in helping us decide what was sensible to see and do in the rather extreme winter conditions in York. He was an ex-staff member of the York Museum (well worth a visit) and an official guide to York so we could not have had better advice. The location of the hotel is excellent less than a mile from the railway station and about half that distance from the Minster and main attractions in the city centre. York has dozens of attractive pubs and restaurants (tip - try Betty's) so we did not have the opportunity to use the hotel's dining facilities apart from the buffet breakfast which was good. This was a very nice little hotel. The price is quite affordable and it is very close to all the sights that York has to offer, you basically walk down the street and you have arrived at the Peter Gate. The breakfast there is very good, though not included with the room price. It's very cheap anyway (around 5 pounds) The rooms are extremely clean […] and well decorated, with comfortable sheets and mattresses. The hotel is in a very quiet neighborhood as well. The room contained exactly the number of beds listed in the reservation. Great older building that's been updated nicely inside. Excellent breakfast value at 10 pounds for prepared options or 5 pounds for continental breakfast when I stayed. Staff is friendly. Location is very convenient from the train station and an easy walk into the center of the walled city. York seems wonderful for shopping and site seeing.

There were office Christmas parties on three of the four nights we stayed. Very noisy till midnight. The mattress was very lumpy. Otherwise the hotel and service were good, but we will not be going again.

Very loud machine (air conditioning unit?) outside our window. Loud enough to disturb our sleep. When we closed the window the room got far too hot (it didn't benefit from the air conditioning). Plug in the basin didn't work. Had to ask for the newspaper we should have got. Otherwise, everything else was very good.

The hotel were very friendly, when we arrived the carpark was full of dinner guests. The receptionist explained that we could leave the car blocking others and either leave the key with them or move it later. In the end we parked over the access to the beer cellar and left the keys just in case. I travel the world for work and this is the first time I have ever stayed in a hotel and had to sleep on the floor! The rooms are deceptively small. The bed sheets were torn. The throw on the bed was sticky. When I asked about the non functioning air conditioning I was simply told that it was "off". I asked for a room where I could leave a window open […] as this room was on the ground floor level and I was moved from a standard to a superior double. However, on retiring to the room to sleep I discovered that the matress was completely ruined. Goodness knows how the maid had not noticed this as the damage had not been done overnight. The shower functions could not be changed. The remote control for the tv was missing. The code for late entry to the hotel did not work. The stay was absolutely dreadful. I made a complaint in the morning, but the receptionist had apparently started that very morning. I was also informed that I had checked out before I checked out, goodness knows who checked me out or which rooms they had mixed up. I can not recommend this hotel and I have made a formal complaint by post. My stay at The Churchill was without doubt the worst hotel experience I have had in over 30 years of international travel. Rooms are VERY small and en-suite even smaller. Anyone above average size would have trouble sitting on the toilet! Air conditioning didn't work. Room was too warm even on coolest setting. Hotel staff did nothing to help. We had to keep the windows fully open to survive. Bed is uncomfortable and pillows are thin rubber affairs you expect to find in […] a Travel Inn. WiFi didn't work. We were given a cable which allowed my laptop to connect to internet but you are restricted to the desk. Breakfast was chaos and staff were rude and unobliging. Second time I have stayed at the Churchill Hotel, this hotel is rated as 3 star, I would rate it closer to 4 star. Room comfortable and clean, staff very helpful, seems to be a popular hotel with weddings which is always a good sign, two weddings had taken place in the three days I was there but heard little to no noise in my room. Hotel has it's own […] free parking area which can be a problem with some hotels within the city walls. Very good location, around 5 mins walk to city wall & The Minster. The only very minor issue I have is the bar does not open until 5pm, I enjoy a beer or coffee in the afternoon, although there are other bars in the area.
