BEST WESTERN MAYA YUCATAN - Merida

I had a great time in Mérida, in large part thanks to Misión de Fray Diego Hotel. The hotel is in a beautiful colonial building with lots of architectural details, in contrast with the decor of the rooms, which was understated, befitting the the original purpose of the building (a monastery?). The room was decent in size. I found the bathroom a little bit uncomfortable as there was no counter space at all, so I had to put my toiletries on the sink, or on the floor, or on the toilet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, except that, for my taste, the chef was a little bit on the generous side with the salt. The hotel is 2 blocks from the main square on a not-very-well-lit street. However, I soon found Mérida is a very safe city.

I love hotels like this just as I loved waking up each morning to the other guests eating brekfast on the terrace. Beds are typical of non-high end ones in Mexico, which is to say not of the greatest comfort, but I could deal. Internet was also spotty, but I could deal with that too. So affordable and I would never want to stay in any other area in Merida. This is where the action is if you are a tourist.

Perfect for anyone needing to fly into or out of the airport at Merida. Clean, friendly and perfect location. English spoken at desk. Once your past the desk your in a different world. Quiet, peaceful and clean. If you eat at the resturant,Walker order off the menu. Better than the buffet.

The Marionetas is a small and cozy hotel located approx 6 blocks from the center of downtown. Overall we enjoyed our stay in the hotel - the place feels homey, rooms are clean and nicely decorated, there's a small pool+garden in the middle and next to it a patio with a few tables (used for breakfast). Here are some more impressions: - Our first room (one of the king size bed rooms) had a leaking toilet which was also very weak (a common problem in Merida and they even ask you not to throw paper...). In addition the king size rooms are right next to the entrance and their windows are so high that they are unusable, so after 2 nights we moved to a 2-bed room and it was much better. - The included breakfast was not bad - some buns+jam, yogurt, fruits and orange juice. Overall good quality and the waiter Jesus was really nice too. - The hotel location could be better, but still not a deal breaker. It's a 15 minute walk from the center. - Each room has a hammock which was a very nice addition. If they added a couple of these in the garden it would be perfect. - The Wifi signal could really use a boost... The signal can vary from room to room, but from our experience you'll have to sit in the patio to get a decent signal. - TVs are really small so I'd definitely do some upgrade there as well. Overall - a clean hotel, friendly staff and good value for the money. If you just avoid the rooms with the king size bed - you can't go wrong.
