I enjoyed Tucan hotel so much that if I am ever in that area again I will book my stay. I have never been to Mexico and I booked this through Expedia. The place was super, super clean. They seem to wash everything from top to bottom everyday. They are hard working and they do a wonderful job. The only thing that I would want to see change is the bed, […] it was a little stiff. Other than that the people, food and safety were awesome! Book this hotel if there is room you will not be disappointed. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great for a weekend"
I Like this hotel because of its location, right on the 5th ave. 3 blocks from the night clubs and 3 from the Beach, the Hotel is surrounded by restaurants, shops, some bars, so if you want to go out at nights it is an excellent choice. plus it is all inclusive so you actually do not spend on drinks at the beach. the hotel has a private beach with a […] bar next to KOOL. Im coming back no doubt.

Maybe we came on a bad day, but as we were checking in a cockroach dropped on the receptionists desk right in front of me while another guest argued with the manager about there clothes being stolen from their room. Room was long overdue a refurbishment with what looked like blood on the walls and a rusty hot water heater that was leaking onto the floor. TV and AC remotes screwed into the bedside cabinet which gave an air of a flop house hotel. Door to the room was about as secure as the door on my garden shed... Might be fine if came to party and just need a place to crash but for the money not worth it. Also personally too close to crazyness of 5 Avenue.... Personally even if I came to party, I would want something more calm to come back to. Super noisey....
"Average, nothing special."
We had originally booked 2 nights at the Nina hotel on 8th Street but were offered an upgrade to the Tukan. I was excited for an upgrade. Once at the Tukan, the reception staff were friendly but we had to wait for the room to be cleaned, eventhough we were told we would get right in. They give you a room key with your photo on it, which I had never experienced before. They put a bracelet on you, which I could not figure out why? They also give discount to use the “Kool Club”. It cost 300 pesos per person but then that money gets credited for your food and drinks. I had been to the Kool Club before. It is nice with lounge chairs and a pool right on the beach. What I did not like about the Kool club is that you cannot bring any outside food or drinks in and everyone knows you must drink lots of water in Mexico. Purchasing water bottles is expensive and the waiters do watch to make sure you are not cheating in this regard. The Tukan has a nice pool but it is not adults only, as the Nina would have been so we had children splashing. There is a nice lounge with pricey drinks. The reception area has a guy that will book tours for you. If you are going to take a tour anywhere, I suggest you use them and not purchase from a street vendor, as some of those vendors are not reliable. The Tukan section our room was in was across the street between 5th and the beach. It was secure, requiring your key to enter the building. Our room faced the side street. The room was clean and cute with 2 beds and a balcony. The wood shutters and solid wood doors are a nice touch. The bathroom is large but looks like they have not done maintenance or upgraded in a while. Some of the small tiles were missing. The shower had great pressure but the shower head was placed so high and the shower space was narrow and long that the water hit the side wall making it not comfortable for short people (5’1”) and the shower head could not be adjusted. The towels were thick and large. The A/C worked great and a nice TV with English channels. Soap and shampoo was provided but no hair conditioner. In retrospect and not having seen the rooms at the Nina hotel, I am wondering how much of an upgrade the Tukan could be? I will not stay here a second time.

The hotel is really well located if you will go out to clubs and stuff like that, but the service is kind of bad. Me and my friends had to wait 2 and a half ours to get our room because it was "being cleaned". The hotel has several buildings so don't expect to stay in the main hotel, maybe your room will be in the following street. WiFi was not available in our building at all only in the main one. The "buffet" they offer is really limited and the service is not average but bad. They probably think they are making you a favor or something like that. The beach is like 10-15 minutes away walking. The hotel club is also 15-20 minutes away walking and basically is shared with another hotel. This is insane. Overall is good if you are not going to stay in the hotel during the day and will only use it to "sleep", but for sure this was my first and last time at this hotel.
"OK overall but issues at check-in and bad service from our tour operator"
08/06/14 Lynsanddeano Manchester, United Kingdom
This is an attempt to give a factual opinion of the hotel as some of the issues we experienced were in fact down to mis-information from our tour operator (Thomson) and bad communication between Thomson and El Tukan. When we arrived we were told we were only on the standard All-inc plan which basically means buffet food every meal. However at the time of booking and twice via email from Thomson I was assured that all Thomson bookings were entitled to the premium plan. Despite me presenting an email from Thomson to the check-in desk they still wouldn't accept this and made us wait around in reception until the manager came who again was pretty unhelpful. This resulted in me having to contact the Thomson 24 hour hot line as the resort office wasn't open (why a resort office would be closed when a plane load of people would be checking in I do not understand). after about half an hour of arguing the manager gave us the premium band for that night and told us to meet him in reception the following morning at 8.30. Surprise, surprise he wasn't there the following morning! This meant I had to contact Thomson again who told me to meet their rep at the hotel at 11:30 therefore the morning of our holiday wasted. The rep managed to make sure we kept our premium bands however there were still 2 hotels and 3 bars that we were told we could originally use when we booked which were now no longer available as the hotel they were at was shut??!! Another point is that nowhere on the Thomson website does it state that the deluxe rooms are not in the main building and therefore not on 5th ave. They are in fact located on a street between 10th and 15th with a tiny pool, 3 sun loungers and no on-site facilities (bar, snacks) etc. not really (all -inclusive in my mind if you have to either go to the main hotel part or beach everyday just to make sure you don't die from dehydration/starvation). The room itself was clean and spacious but not really what I'd call deluxe and storage space was limited. we never used the pool at our building or the main building as we went to the beach club everyday which was fine. Food wise the buffet breakfast was great, lots of choice. We also ate at Legends sports bar for a snack on the way back from the beach a couple of times and the food was good there too. We ate at Tulipanas twice and again the food was very good although the menu a little limited. Living Bar is a great place to get drinks and people watch on 5th. Overall the hotel was ok and the location good as we found loads of little cool local restaurants on 10th away from the more Amercanised 5th. It isn't a hotel that I would recommend if you have kids due to the lack of on-site facilities over in the Deluxe block and the distance to the beach club. Its not particularly far but it would be a very hot walk for toddlers/babies. The all inc worked well for us as we could get drinks all day at the beach and call in at living or legends on the way back so we didn't spend very much but we did tend to eat outside of the all inc plan at night. Was it worth the money? this is a difficult one to judge as we booked a package so no idea how much the flights actually cost. Would we go back to the hotel? now we know what to expect maybe as the location and flexibility of the premium all inc worked well for us Would we book with Thomson again? Absolutely not! 1st evening and morning of our holiday stressful and ruined due to them not being bothered to have on-site reps available at check-in time which is generally when most problems occurr
"best location to party beach down the street"

great location hotel nice comfortable and cheap loved it! ( on 5 avenue, depend the room which you reserved). You don't need rent a car in this hotel or pay taxi. Staff were all super friendly and inviting as well. Pool area has nice loungers and lots of sun
"Great location, comfortable accommodation"
This hotel is in a great spot right off of happening 5th Ave...reception area is inviting and comfortable and wifi immediately available for use. Staff were all super friendly and inviting as well. Pool area has nice loungers and lots of sun. We stayed in a standard room (poolside) and it was adequate...nothing new or fancy but had good storage areas and a safe. The wall air conditioner was loud but kept the room cool. The concierge was friendly and readily available for bookings. As far as "value for money", we got a great deal through hotels.com (70% off) for our standard room which is regular priced at $117, otherwise you are paying a LOT for the location! Overall, our 1 night stay was good but would have felt quite overpriced for the room we had. Great people.
"Perfect location for party!!!"

This was my first time in Playa del Carmen and it was one of the best experience that I had in life (June 3 - June 9, 2014) . My overall rating for the hotel might be confusing. First, the hotel is placed in a privileged location. It is right on 5ta avenida and there is always lots of people walking. I went there with friends and we went to every club possible during our visit. Clubs are REALLY close to the hotel so if you are in a party mood it is really convenient. Now, the room that we got was really outdated; TV was really old, furniture was old and I don't know if the AC was working or the humidity and heat over there is really intense, bathroom also outdated, I mean, there wasn't a phone in the room! needless to say but the TV remote control was screwed to the nightstand, which for me, is kind of odd. Anyways, probably we got one the oldest rooms in the hotel BUT the service is really nice, the pool is really small and gets crowded specially afternoon. SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE! I can not stress more this quality from the staff. The pictures that this hotel have from their rooms might be from newer rooms, so, if you are looking for a 5 star hotel, this is NOT your first choice or just make sure before you book that your room is updated. If you are going with the mentality and mood or going out and just use the hotel to sleep, then, this is your FIRST choice. Also, there are a lot of choices to eat around the hotel and in 5ta avenida. If I go again to Playa del Carmen, I will definitely choose this hotel again!!!!!
"Best Place in Playa del Carmen"

I have been in this place for two times. Excelent location (only one or two block from 5 avenue, depend the room which you reserved). The prices is cheap (only I buy the breakfast and room). You don't need rent a car in this hotel or pay taxi (if you arrive for bus, only walk to north in the 5 avenue to arrive. It will take around 10 or 15 minutes.). The room are fine with air condition. Wifi is not good, but it doesn't matter because you are in vacation.
"Good location, all others are bad, real bad"

5 of us spent a day there, all put into different room 1 to 2 blocks away from the hotel main compound which means you have to pull your luggage across the streets. Rooms all come with smell of moisture , cold shower only (although the staff to send someone to fix it nothing happened), air-con remote controller only works with on/off and no effect with any other buttons and towels that you cannot call them white towels at all. Receptionist is very focused on their work but you just don't call them friendly, apparently they don't enjoy the work. If you like the location, and the party noise comes with it, and you are so drunk that you don't care, otherwise if you have a choice, choose some otHer hotels. Looking at the previous comments and replies, I think the hotel management will reply something like this (they have no report of what everyone said) quote Dear Guest: Thank you for your comments, We are very sorry your experience with us.We can ensure that the foundation of our company is to give satisfaction and total quality to our customers.Unfortunately we have no report of the details written on their part.We hope your experience will be allowed to return back to the hotel to improve printing. Dirty hotel, really bad service, "all inclusive" is a lie, rude personal at the front desk, there's only one restaurant with deficient food, pool is not where all the rooms are, no beach club. Do you need any other reasons to avoid this hotel??
