"Modest hotel. Good value"
This is a good clean hotel in an excellent location. Air conditioning did not work but was eventually moved to a new roomGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The hotel is located at the best part of 5th ave! Right near a shopping mall. 2 blocks away from the best nightclubs and bars. It has a partnership with Kool beach club (5 blocks away), which is very convenient. It doesn't offer breakfast, but there's an all you can eat buffet right in front for only US$ 9,00 (breakfast) >> La Ceiba. Since there are meny trees, the pool is most of the day under shadow. The rooms are clean and spacious, but they can be a bit noisy at night (didin't affect my sleep though). There is no elevator to the upper rooms (1st floor). I had a nice stay >> would recommend the hotel.
"No hot water and awful service"

I traveled with friends and my boyfriend, when we arrived we were told we had to pay extra for having 4 people in a 2 bedroom suite (although I already talked about it with their "reservations" desk by phone). I asked for no stairs room, because I'm recovering from a spinal procedure, why not give us a 3rd floor/no elevator room. The room didn't had even a phone to call the front desk and didn't had hot water during our entire stay (4 days), and a couple of days my friends had to went down because we didn't have even towels in the bathroom. Staying here was the worst part of Playa.
"Excellent location, not so good for relaxing"

Stayed there with a friend during the BPM festival. The staff are friendly and helpful at all times, the wifi connection was great and available alms everywhere in the hotel. The rooms are clean but not luxurious at all, but they are ok. The all inclusive option go for Premium! Otherwise you will only have the option to eat in La Ceiba restaurant and you DO NOT want to end up eating there since it looks like a prison and the staff there is very rude, literally is like they were doing you the favour of feeding you and the food is not good at all. However Los Tulipanes which is a better option once you are on Premium is very very good in food options and quality of the food. The location of the place just couldn't be better, bars and restaurants and clubs and even the beach is less than 5 min walk. Everything you need is in walking distance. the beach area is a few blocks away tho and it is only a small area they call "Elite" elite= small and in the corner... So go early to the beach if you want a chair. The beach area is in KOOL beach bar. So they have music all day, if you are there with friends for a party Great! If you want to relax and read a book or with kids maybe not so good. Also at night it can be loud with all the people partying in the rooms and also there is a bar behind the hotel that has quite loud music until 2am. Overall I would definitely stay there again. But only when going with friends, not with my boyfriend or would recommend it for a family.

Want something practical, comfortable and economic? Go there, it is more than just OK for the price. The rooms are very humid and the AC noisy... but it's ok because when you're tired you sleep easily. the cleaning ladies start early... it doesn't bother me but may be other persons won't like it
"Tukan complex 2 is viewless and not what we reserved"

We booked our hotel reservations (sept) for all our families to be together for Christmas (4 families/ 4 individual rooms) at the Real Playa and when we got there they said they were over booked but were going to upgrade us to another of their properties which is the Tukan. We got to the Tukan and told them that Real Playa had sent us and they acted completely put out and gave us all rooms across the street at complex 2, from the hotel map I seen 4 complexes total. Our complex was across a busy street and had a very very small pool/jacuzzi. Our room was on the first floor with a sliding glass door in the front and window viewing the street with Legends bar in the back. Room was dank and musty without the air conditioner going. Back window had sewage smell whenever it rained but bathroom humidity was intolerable when it was closed. Other family members had rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors and nobody had views of anything but the street or building across the street. Breakfast was across a busy street at another complex. Hotel beach is 8 blocks away and hotel lounge chairs are limited thereafter loungers cost $5-$15USD per day. Pool at beach is for adults only! It is true what other reviews said about shopping close by, on two corners of hotel there are shops and one corner is the biggest high end shopping center in Playa del Carmen. Point is i brought my family to this paradise to play in the sun and get away from it all not hotel at the mall. This is not a child friendly hotel with traffic crossings to get from one complex to the next and a bit of walk for little ones to the beach that is not friendly to them.

Every time I come to Playa I stay here. This is a no frills, clean and functional hotel. The interior garden with the pool is just perfect for relaxing away from the beach and most rooms have big balconies that face the interior garden, the hotel is right off the 5th avenue close to all the shops and restaurants and while its in the middle of the action the rooms don't feel noisy. The hotel itself is two blocks from the beach but it has a beach club with towel, chair and bar service that is a ten minute walk away, it is located next to the infamous Mamita's beach club and it can get noisy and crowded at times but overall it is OK. Sometimes I'll grab towels and go sit somewhere else on the beach. They have different rates with food service, I usually get the breakfast package which is fairly decent since I like to eat out for lunch and dinner. I've stayed here about 10 times and have always been happy.

This hotel is in an excellent location for shopping and walking distance to its beach. Restaurants and bar are good. I would rate rooms as a three star (European rating). Administration is a bit 'manana'. Room was clean - contrary to other travellers comments. Floors very slippery - beware! Bed very hard.
"Just don't do that, don't go there."

As said on previous comments, if you are just looking for a good location, this is the place. If you are expecting more ... just don't go there, and do not take the all inclusive package!!! Here is a list of some of the disagreements we had during our 3 days stay : - water stopping while taking your shower. Although, you can "be lucky" and have OR cold water OR really hot water. - We took the all inclusive package. They first announced a price, and when we said ok, they changed it, taking for excuse that they made a mistake. Anyway. You are promised to be offered food and drinks in all the facilites of the hotel (incluying the beach club). Then you discover that : 1. you can eat only in a cheap "self service restaurant", you cannot eat at the beach club or in the main restaurant of the hotel unless you are willing to pay. 2. At the beach club, you cannot choose to put your towel whereever you want, you have to stay in the 20 m2 place that is "reserved for the hotel consumers", far far from the sea and once sitted you can almost smell the feet of your neighbour. You feel like cattle, litteraly. Oh yea, I almost forgot, you cannot ask for any waiter to bring you your drinks, you have to go for them yourself. Again, far from the fancy bar you would go to If you were willing to pay. - The food and drink they offer you in the all inclusive is so bad ... At the best, it doesn't taste anything. We suspect that it gave us stomack problems. Although this is a personnal criteria, but for us, food and drinks are one of the most important things when we travel. - Service is just awful. As if not taking the complains of the consumer into consideration wasn't enough, they are also disrespectful, unpolite, and they really make you understand that they don't give a s*** about what you could say. - We also waited for the manager to come talk to us during 2 days (coming back to the front desk to see him 4 or 5 times a day - obviously that's the only thing you want to do being on vacation at the beach ... ). Each time we were told to come back later. - I forgot a piece of close in the closet of the room, and I realized it once I was back in Mexico City. I sent an email asking them for it. I never got any answer. I'd like to add that they received the Trip advisor "Certificate of excellence" 2013. This is a point I do not understand, and - even though I don't know what are the modalities - I really think they (Trip Advisor) should pay more attention when attribuing this type of prize, or the consumer will stop trusting them.
"Perfect if you are not looking for all-inclusive luxury"
11/21/13 emj22013 Nederland
When you are looking for a top notch all inclusive resort this is NOT the place to be. When you are looking for a fantastic located nice hotel to use for sleeping this one is the best. Been here three times and we were very lucky to have the biggest room of the hotel (with 2 balconies, one of them was 60m2). Room was completly renovated. Service was perfect. If you do your research well and you will book this hotel you will love it. If you don't I can imagine it is not what you expected. PS: Don't book all-in, or even with Breakfast. I don't know if the food is good or not. But you are near hundreds of cheap restaurants who prepare absolutly fantastic food.
"Fine location on 5th Avenue."
10/16/13 ExPatMart Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Should your budget your stretch as far as one of the luxury beach front hotels then El tukan's location in the centre of 5th Avenue and a walk of five minutes to the beach is ideal. We took the opportunity of a last minute with Holland International for 510 euro per person. The flight was with Arke International. food was just about Ok and for entertainment you had a charge of 10 euros for a portable handset. A return journey and you've seen all that is worth watching. We arrived at the hotel arounf 13:30 and had to wait until 15:00 before being allowed into the room. The room has most definetly seen better days with plenty of black marks around the bathroom and the remote control screwed down to the bedside cabinet. No luxurious by any sense of the word. The daily cleaner did her best with clean towels daily and folded on the bed into animals/flowers etc. Nice touch. We arrived the week after there had been a terrible hurricane on the island though Plays del Carmen was not particularly effected. No more than normal for this time of the year with the odd shower. Hotel staff were efficient and had a technican to our room within 5 minutes due to a leaking toilet. Remeber to buy plenty of "OFF" for the mosquitos as sitting outside in the evening can become quite a pain. The hotel offers a beach club 10 minutes walk away which offer beds and towels. You're placed in a central location up the neach next to the towel hut where you are not allowed to consume your own food or beverages. Better to take their towels and lay nearer to the sea and do as you like. The hotel offered an all inclusive service for 75 euros a person for drinks and food however why come all this way and sit in the same restaurant and bar all day. The hotel is OK for the price though dont expect any thrills and the location and friendliness of the Mexican people more than make up for the room. We would return to Playa del Carmen though with a larger budget we would stay elsewhere.
