I enjoyed Tucan hotel so much that if I am ever in that area again I will book my stay. I have never been to Mexico and I booked this through Expedia. The place was super, super clean. They seem to wash everything from top to bottom everyday. They are hard working and they do a wonderful job. The only thing that I would want to see change is the bed, […] it was a little stiff. Other than that the people, food and safety were awesome! Book this hotel if there is room you will not be disappointed. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great for a weekend"
I Like this hotel because of its location, right on the 5th ave. 3 blocks from the night clubs and 3 from the Beach, the Hotel is surrounded by restaurants, shops, some bars, so if you want to go out at nights it is an excellent choice. plus it is all inclusive so you actually do not spend on drinks at the beach. the hotel has a private beach with a […] bar next to KOOL. Im coming back no doubt. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Modest hotel. Good value"
This is a good clean hotel in an excellent location. Air conditioning did not work but was eventually moved to a new roomGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

This is my fourth trip to PDC. I'm not one to stay in all-inclusives, and ritzy hotel resorts. Let's face it, I'm cheap (and I like to live on the wild side) THIS place...a resort, it's not. BUT I was aware of that when I paid only $50 a night for it. You get what you pay for, folks! Hard beds, old buildings, it just comes with the territory. I don't spend much time in the room anyway. Having said that, and with my experience in a few other hotels on 5th ave, you can't go wrong with El Tukan. It has an actual pool, the showers are hot (believe it or not, this is a big issue in many hotels here) AND the place is pretty cool with the forest-like atmosphere. I even found a little friendly kitty to play with. Location is great and the service/security is excellent. Don't listen to the naysayers. If you're looking for an exclusive resort, however, be prepared to spend more elsewhere.
"A decent hotel..."
12/11/14 Abhishek A Sunnyvale, California
Ideally I traveled here in July 2012 but writing review very late so had to choose a month in last 1 year...got a very good deal on the hotel...hotel was neat and clean with friendly staff...pool area seemed small but decent...best part was the location (especially when we had to stay in hotel primarily only for resting purpose)...right on 5th Ave...plenty of shopping, eating-out options with easy accessibility to port and bus-stop. It had a travel desk also with to help with any sight-seeing deals. There are few night clubs also close to hotel..Staying here was worth it...primarily cos of cost and location...
"Great bang for the buck"

I recommend that you do NOT do the all inclusive. The only reason is that there is so many great and reasonably priced restaurants that you'd miss out by feeling obligated to eat based on what you spent. Anyway, it is a 5 minute walk from the beach club setting. IF you do all-inclusive, the drinks are free on the beach club. If not, just stop at the local store, pick up a bottle and they'll keep it cool for you. The beach club area has a nicer plot of beach than the 5 star hotels that sit right on the beach next to it. As for the hotel, it is decent being in the center of ecology. Always had a clean room. Not super special but better than average. On 5 Avenida just north of the heart of the major activity. So it is quiet enough. Internet access was just "ok". But like I said, great bang for the buck.
"Convenient for couples and families"
At the heart of Playa del Carmen, you're in the middle of the famous 5ta Avenida. Just getting out from the hotel and you'll find nice restaurants, 2 blocks at north a mall and several blocks to the south part of the night life. The hotel has 2 restaurant inside (quality of food could be improved) and includes admission to the Kool Beach Club, which is a 10 minute walk. It's convenient, tought, for couples and families because it's calm and quiet.
"Memorable vacation at El Tucan"
11/30/14 carol b Langley City, Canada
We were nicely surprised by the staff who were so helpful and friendly. A big thank you to Marta who did a wonderful job cleaning our room daily and to Alejandro Rios who acted in the most professional manner and went beyond his duty to give us peace of mind. As for the waiters: Gabriel at the sport bar who took the time to answer our numerous questions and to Victor and Jose and the many others that made our culinary experience so enjoyable with great service. El Tucan was a home away from home. My husband and I would recommend it to anyone who think of travelling there. This was our first trip ever to Mexico and we really enjoyed it. The bed was hard but it played in my favor as it took my backache away! This was a bonus for me but not so much for my husband who likes softer mattress...oh well we can't have it all! The rooms were old but so clean! Thank you everyone, Carol and Dirk
"Friendly Service, Nice Location, but..."
11/08/14 Sandra C Venice, Louisiana
The hotel looks nice at first glance, the service was friendly, and the location is great. The room was clean, but primitive. The bed and pillows were, shall we say firm? Ok, they were hard and lumpy, not comfortable at all. There was not even a phone in the room. The restaurant on the meal plan was some kind of a cruel joke, so after sampling what tasted like soggy, moldy tortilla chips drenched in salsa verde, we went elsewhere and paid for something decent, or at least edible. And while printing your picture and dates of arrival and departure onto your room key is a nice personal touch, I think it's kind of creepy and a security risk. I mean, what could possibly go wrong if I lost my room key? Not a hotel I would go back to, which is a shame because the service really was quite friendly.
"Definitely would stay there again"
11/03/14 monica m Monterrey, Mexico
Rooms are average but clean, food and beach club are good. Pretty good deal for what we paid, we would definitely stay there again. Location is pretty good as well, on the 5th. Waiters at their restaurants aren't the friendliest, but it's not a big deal.

I booked five nights there last year with all inklusive. They promised great restaurants to eat and have drinks, a amazing beach club (pics were looking nice), but we got anything close to this. Our room was next to their construction area, noise all the time, stinky room and bad did not feel conforable, not really clean. We arrive the first day around 3 pm, and they made us wait to check in as the room wasn´t ready, CHAOS!. We visited this day the beach club, aja such was small, ugly, small and ugly pool full with drunken young people. At 3 pm we were denied to get towels or drinks as the beach club closes at 4 and as it was already 3 we hadnt enough time. (they were picking up everything). Well to make this story short, we ended up very angry about this and bout the hotel as the recepcionist was very rood and did not care about the situation. We canceled the rest of our nights but thrue the administration, which I called to. We got the money back after few months but at least we enjoyed the rest of our stay there at another nice hotel. I WOUL NOT RECOMEND THIS HOTEL AT ALL! We were there around March last year.
"The maid steals from your room, and the manager doesn't respond to e-mails"
10/25/14 Jolie R Oosterhout, The Netherlands
Only go here when you like it when your personal belongings get stolen from your room. My boyfriend's jeans got stolen from our hotel room after one day. We went to the manager, who didn't seem to take this seriously. We filled in some forms and complained. He asked us why we didn't rent a safe. Well, this is weird: you can't put all your clothes in a sage, right? A week later, my boyfriend's perfume got stolen from our room as well. The manager seemed to take this seriously and we didn't see the maid after that. He promised us to e-mail us the forms we filled in (we need these as proof for our travel insurance). My boyfriend has e-mailed him three times now, but gets absolutely no response from him. So never go here: your belongings are not safe, and the hotel makes promises they don't keep. Good to mention that if you don't choose for all-inclusive (which is a waste, Playa del Carmen has so many good restaurants), you get the worst rooms.
"Average at Best"

We stayed at El Tukan last April. It was very busy and crowded in Playa at that time of year but still, this hotel leaves quite a bit to be desired. We paid for an upgraded room but upon arrival they attempted to put us in a room across the street from a bar and right above 5th Ave. This was not going to work so they changed our room to one within the main courtyard. It was okay but not good. The smoke detector or something of the room right next door chirped and beeped all night. I would not return to this hotel but it was inexpensive and right on 5th Ave. I've stayed in better places in Playa del Carmen for less.
