The one good thing about the Meryem Hotel was the front desk staff. They were very helpful and friendly. Otherwise I would not recommend the hotel. The location is a little shady and I did not feel safe walking around the neighborhood. Also, from the condition of the rooms, I was surprised that this was considered a 4 star hotel. I travel a lot and […] understand that abroad 4 star means something different than it does in the States but this was far from 4 Star by any standard. The rooms were not cleaned very well. Upon check-in I did not have a remote for either the tv or the air conditioner and had to go to the front desk to obtain them. The remote they gave me for the tv did not work (it was for a different model) and in fact the tv itself did not even get a picture. I was told that I had to climb on a chair to turn the air conditioner on and off. Upon check-in a friend found a wad of hair in her shower drain - how does a cleaning person miss this? I had to pay 20 durham a night for the safe (approximately 2 USD). Not a big deal but for a "4 star" hotel the safe should be included. On the last night I switched to the Meridien which was only 40 USD more than the Meryem Hotel. I needed some comfort on my last night before heading home! Read more

The patio with swimming pools was nice and we were not feeling like in the middle of a very busy town. The hotel is run down and needs renovation, although the lobby looks very good. The room had old beddings and the towels were torn and discolored due to excessive use. Breakfast was very limited. The service overall was really disappointing for a so called 4-star hotel.

It was slight disappointment to a 4* hotel, it is more of 2 or 3* hotel by UK standard, however it is clean and the staff are quite helpful. It is perhaps a last resort if you are expecting to be 4 star hotel, and is worth paying a bit more to get a better equipped hotel.

This hotel is ok if you are on a budget, it may have been 4 stars in its hay-day but is closer to a 3 star these days if compared to the equivalent in the UK. That said the room we had was well appointed and comfortable. The room was also cleaned every day. Table staff and room staff are very polite but do not communicate much (possibly because English […] is their third language with the main being Arabic closely followed by French). Front of House staff are far more obtuse. You get the information you desire but leave their company with a bitter taste in your mouth. The Hotel is situated in the new town, 3 miles from the old city square, if you are up for a walk then the distance is fine if your included to take taxi's be prepared to barter (they charge by the person) and prices very greatly. The pool of this hotel is small but adequate much like the rest of the hotel. It only gets 2 hours on sun a day as it is situated between two tall structures. There is a sun deck on floor 6 (which is not advertised so you'll need to investigate to find it) but on very hot days tripping between the pool and sun-deck would be a pain in the but. The sun-lounges near the pool share the same area as the Hotel's outside tables for the coffee-shop so if you get uncomfortable with others observing you in your swim trunks then this pool is not for you. We did not eat at the restaurant during the day, as we choose to explore the city, we did however eat breakfast, which consisted of croissants, coffee (american urn rubbish), jam, boiled eggs, hand made pancakes, and orange cordial. Not quite 4 star dinning by any means but certainly ok. The area surrounding the Hotel is well worth a look. There are plenty of restaurants to cater for you dinning needs and various budgets. Det kunne blive et fint sted. På hjemmesiden for hotellet er der billed af frugt til morgenmadsbuffeten. Der er ingen frugt. Buffeten er halvtom, bliver ikke fyldt hurtigt nok op. Juicemaskinen er repareret med gammelt sølvpapir, de kunne bare bruger kander til juicen. Der er ingen morgener hvor der er rene borde når man kommer ned. Enten er der stadig urent service eller også er de klistrede dækservietter ikke tørret af. Tjenerne tager brød med fingrene som de derefter giver til gæsterne.
