Peppers Beach Club - Port Douglas

First the positives. The location is great for the town and beach and with the very quiet roads it's easy to get around. The pool area, lobby and restaurant are nice but let's be clear this is a not a 5 star hotel that anyone from the US would recognize. It is probably a 3 star venue at best but given its apartment block tag its gets away with calling […] itself 5 star. The rooms are by far the biggest drawback. Our room was very small, damp and had a very musty smell. I know we were in the tropics but surely decent vents in the bathroom and a ddehumidifier would be a given. We had neither! When we requested a dehumidifier we received one that looked 25 years old. The bed was uncomfortable twins poorly pushed together with sheets bleached so many times they were like sandpaper. The rooms were averagely cleaned at best, making our room a pretty unpleasant place to be. Sad really, because better rooms and this could be a nice hotel. Read more

We had been staying at the Shangri-La Marina in Cairns and it was a bit of a shock when we arrived at Peppers Beach Club as we had been so spoiled in Cairns. The price was about the same but the inclusions weren't- we had a penthouse spa room which was up two flights of stairs (not easy with large luggage)- the room is small and cramped with not much […] room around the bed, the spa tub on the balcony is a nice addition but not private as just about everyone can see in! And, there is A LOT of noise from the corridor (doors slamming, people talking) meaning that there was no money spent on sealing the room doors or sound-proofing them (which is what you would expect from 5 star). However the food was wonderful, we dined in their Sublime restaurant by the pool for dinner and breakfast (continental came with the room but it's worth paying extra for the eggs Benedict- really nice!). The staff were helpful but they didn't go out of their way and they were a little too relaxed. Overall we had a good time but I am glad it was only one night. Read more

Its not about privacy.. We stayed in a room that was very small and uncomfortable in size and layout. The room opens directly onto the pool which is great for the view however horrible for privacy. There is absolutely no privacy when you get out of the spa and the room needs to be shut up completely if you are not wearing anything when you get in or […] out of bed or the shower!! Which would give everyone in the bar and dining area a great show! I found it was overpriced for what you actually got. The breakfast was overpriced and overcooked and was somewhat dissapointing. The staff are professional and the pool is great but it all seemed more suitable for young families than romantic couples. A room on the eastern end of the complex would have been a little better. I really enjoyed staying at this hotel and would highly recommend it. I stayed for a week with my partner in a studio room. The room was clean and had a modern design. The pool was to die for and was the main reason we choose to stay here on top of the location. It was in a perfect location so you were able to walk to the beach (right by the stinger […] net), the harbour and into the main street (only a block away). They included a continental b/fast and it was enough for both of us with a seleciton of cereals, breads, donuts, fresh yoghurt and even crumpets, so we didn't need to order the hot breakfast which was available for an extra Au$10. The only negatives were that it was a little to light in the room in the morning as there were no black out curtains. Also, the room is not cleaned unless you pay an additional amount of AU$40 or AU$50 with new linens. You can, however, choose a package that does include this but you would expect nowdays, especially in a place like Peppers, that it would naturally be included. We also had no problem with noise from the pool, there were children staying here and playing in the pool but we never heard anything if our doors to the balcony were closed (we were on the pool level too). We stayed at the Beach Club in Port Douglas for two nights. It was very quiet and our 3 year old was one of the only kids in the pool which was otherwise completely silent so that wasn't great but the apartments were great. We usually stay at the Beach Club in Palm Cove and thought we'd try Port Douglas for a couple of days first this time. Stayed for the second time in a spa suite, which is a fairly small but pleasant motel-type room with spa on the balcony looking over the pool. The lagoon pool is amazing, maybe 50 meters long and all rooms overlook it. Service was friendly and pleasant . We didn't eat there because there are so many good restaurants just 5 minutes walk away. The beautiful […] main beach is also 5 minutes walk so you could manage well here without a car.
