Good hotel that needs attention to details, beautiful view, good buffet, however the rooms had carpet worn out and dirty and the pool staff could be better trained in customer satisfaction. You had to ask twice to get answers.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good location, and not bad for the price."
Arriving at the hotel, we were horrified at the condition of the beach, as tractors had been trailing up and down it to reach the building site which was for a new outdoor pool and bungalows. A member of staff apologised and explained that bad weather had delayed the building work. However, we found a very pretty beach 5 minutes walk along to the next […] village. Every day, we had to walk through a building site to reach the village. The only other negative that we found, was the unbelievably bad breakfast dishes. I have never seen or tasted anything like it, so gave up after day one and stuck to toast, cheese and yogurt. On top of this, the assistants strolled up and down with a trolley, scraping the left overs into a bucket right under our noses ! On a positive note, the hotel was clean and peaceful. Mlini village was quite pleasant with a few old buildings, a stream and a beautiful old tree. We tried 3 of the restaurants, which were all good, but the Lanterna was our favourite. The shuttle minibus was easy to book, pleasant and convenient. The bedroom was fine, but it could have been a travelodge on the M1 if you didn't look out of the window. The beds were very comfortable, with cool cotton sheets, and the bathroom was well designed although tiny. We were not allowed food or drink in our room which I thought was a bit strict ! In the evenings, we enjoyed dancing in the Piano Bar where a musician sang and played guitar to a backing track. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good location and cleanliness"
The hotel is situated midway between Dubrovnik Airport and Dubrovnik Old Town. Expect to pay approx 180kuna (about £19) for a taxi from the airport to the hotel. The hotel itself is spotless (even though it was undergoing some building work during our stay). Reception staff were helpful and attentive. Our room was in the annex, which is not as bad as […] it sounds - lovely sea view, newly fitted bathroom and a comfortable enough bed. Only negatives might be the reception area lacking much atmosphere, and the food. We were bed and breakfast, but on our night of arrival opted to pay for the evening buffet service at a cost of approx £15 a head and the food was bland and tasteless and definately not worth the money! Breakfast on the other hand was adequate and set us up for the day. The hotel beach is a little sparse, and again, lacks atmosphere. There are only three alternative restaurants close by to the hotel. The indoor pool was nice. An outdoor pool is under construction. The hotel is definately popular with an older clientele, with the average age at least 60! Special mention should go to Joseph who arranges transportation too and from the hotel. He is friendly and helpful. Buses too and from Dubrovnik and nearby Cavtat are relatively easy to negotiate, but the long slope to the bus stop could be tricky for some. Overall, a good stay and excellent base for exploring this part of the country. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Brilliant for some relaxation!"
This hotel is definitely targeted towards an older crowd, however the services available and provided are great for all. I read a number of reviews quoting the staff as rude or not very forthcoming. I think this is a misinterpretation and an injustice towards them. They were always helpful and tried to assist wherever possible. I do think their level […] of English language sometimes made them feel uncomfortable, but they could converse more than adequately. The swimming pool, gym, sauna and other amenities may cost extra (£3 per amenity), but it appeared this only applied in the evening (albeit the attendants were rarely there to accept the payment!). There is a shuttle bus that runs a return trip to Dubrovnik (7 miles away) for £5 pp or alternatively, there is a bus stop 200 yards from the hotel entrance on the main road which has regular buses (number 10) to Dubrovnik for £1.50 (the last bus back from Dubrovnik is at 0130 hours). The hotel itself is very quiet and idyllic for people looking for a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. There is an acoustic guitar player most nights in the bar from 9pm and drinks are relatively cheap. Breakfast was brilliant and there are a number of restaurants nearby to have a good choice of evening meals. All in all, it is a superb place and I would definitely recommend it to family and friends, but not if you're wanting an adrenaline packed holiday. The sunsets from the hotel are spectacular! Smelly shower curtain, tired decor. Rude overstretched piano bar staff. Staying for just one night so did not have the energy or time to complain at the time. "beautiful location for a hotel."
The hotel was of easy reach from the airport, only a 15min drive. Staff were polite and helpful, providing a brilliant service and went out of their way to arrange excursions for us. Breakfast was satisfactory, it was the same thing everyday, a bit of variety would of been nice especially for vegetarians. cleanliness of the hotel was exceptional and […] the daily cleaning of the room was good. This location was good for those who want a quiet break, not for party goers. The view from the hotel was beautiful, from the sunrise in the morning to the sunset in the evening and watching the moonlight glisten over the sea was so surreal. "Well located hotel"
The views from and around the hotel are stunning. The hotel itself is fairly basic, having adequate amenities. We went during the London 2012 Olympics so we were often hanging out in the bar area hoping to catch some action on the TV screen. On the whole this was a much underused area of the hotel even in the evening. Food was our one disappointing […] factor. We had breakfast included and this was not great but ok if you are not fussed about the quality of what you eat. Be aware use of the gym is at an extra cost if that is one of the attractions of this hotel for you as it was for us. We decided not to use it in the end as it was charged by the hour. We did have free use of the swimming pool but as the sea is literally on the doorstep of this hotel you will probably not make use of it like us. The hotel had car hire facility on site and a number of tour operators if you wanted to see the sites and was happy to let someone take care of that. We ended up hiring a car to see more of the area. This cost about 450 Kuna's which is about £50. It's worth doing when travelling further afield otherwise use public transport, which is pretty cheap. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"OK Standard, Good facilities"
We enjoyed staying at Hotel Astraea, mostly because of the closeness to Dubrovnik (10 minutes with local bus), the new, fresh pool area, the calm surroundings and the cheap price. Mlini did not offer to many restaurants or pubs, but you can easily get to Dubrovnik. from the hotel. Unfortunately the breakfast wasn't the best, neither was the dinner. AC i rummet fungerar inge vidare. "Nice views good base popular"
07/30/14 rory5 Swansea, United Kingdom
Nice hotel we were on half board but prefer "all inclusive",, room was small and although we requested a sea view had a view of half the front car park and half sea view we were on the 2nd floor eventhough we requested a high floor, best ask for a garden/sea view on a high floor 3rd. Best take a travel kettle as there is not one in room nor was there a fridge. The wardrobes were small and the sliding doors have a cunning way of trapping your fingers , you have been warned , shower room is tiny. There is an excellent shuttle bus service to Dubrovnik well worth a visit and other places of interest a small charge of 100 Kuna for 2 is good value. Not much in the good way of entertainment you can go for a walk on the promenade for other bars/restaurants.Food was ok nice view from reataurant. Beware there are lots of steps outside if you have difficulty walking TAKE CARE . Montenegro is a excursion also the village of Cavtat use the shuttle for this one.

About 8 kl. from Dubrovnik it was an excellent base for exploring the area. A courtesy mini bus takes you into the old town for approx. return of £5.We used this about four times during our ten day stay and the drivers are good crack! The hotel food is good, but could do with a few more choices, especially on the main courses. The hotel is situated where you can have nice evening walks after dinner. In my overall rating I would have given this hotel a 4 if it could have provided a fridge in the room.

Just returned from 1 weeks stay at this hotel, the main positives are the spectacular sea views and location to Dubrovnik. The room was a small but adequate superior room, the towels and bedding were changed daily. We stayed half board but found the food dull, lukewarm and repetitive also they advertise 'happy hour' cocktails all round the hotel but the staff didn't know about it. The hotel was nice but overpriced, a pint of beer was 29 kunas which works out over £3 a pint and seeing as the hotel owns the beach bar and pizzeria the price was the same everywhere. Another negative was the lack of entertainment in the evenings except for some singers at the beach bar, its such a shame as the piano bar is lovely but always empty. Mlini is very pretty and getting about is easy, hotel shuttle bus to Dubrovnik is great and boat trip to Cavtat is a must. A walk around the bay to Kupari is very interesting, the hotels still show the scars of war but it is a lovely beach and very reasonable beach bar. Loved Croatia and glad to have seen it before it gets over commercialised as there is a few new hotels popping up.

We stayed in this hotel from 23rd June to 6th July 2014 in room 232. Had a wonderful sea view, spotlessly clean room, good new, walk in shower, clean towels every day, Very friendly staff. Lift down to the pool area which overlooked the sea. Choice of swimming in the pool or in the sea which is sandy when you get in and safe for swimming - unusual in Croatia. Food selections for dinner in the evening were sometimes a bit unusual (!!) but we ate twice at the A La Carte restaurant which was excellent and very reasonable, lovely setting. Also some restaurants within walking distance of Mlini and a Pizzaria in Mlini had just reopened as we left. Live music by the beach most evenings to sit and listen to, but if you want any other entertainment this is not the place for you. Enjoyed the water aerobics in the pool in the morning, very funny! The two hotel reps were very entertaining! Bus or boat ride to Dubrovnic and Cavtat which were easy. Took two guided trips out, both excellent. Will return we loved it!

We have just returned from a 10 night stay in this hotel and we were highly delighted with the hotel in general. The staff were polite and professional, the room we had was spotlessly clean, the air - con worked a treat and the amenities were to a high standard. Meals were all self service buffet style with, we thought, a better selection of dishes for meat eaters than vegetarians as usually there was only one or two vegetables on offer every night (one of which was potato in one guise or another). One or two pasta dishes and usually three meat and two fish choices but everything was cooked to perfection, the gravies/sauces were delicious. Breakfast did not vary all that much but there was a huge selection of breads, three types of cereal, cheeses, meats, fresh fruits and yoghurts. Hot breakfast consisted of hard boiled, fried or scrambled eggs, bacon or baked ham, chicken or pork sausage and tomatoes (unfortunately, the pork sausage had skin so thick you could have soled your clogs with it!) but the filling was very tasty. The location of the hotel is pretty good and there is a regular bus service to Dubrovnik or Cavtat but the hill leading from the hotel to the bus stop is not for those with mobility issues. 50 Kuna per person return for the hotel mini bus is what we paid whilst we were there for either Dubrovnik or Cavtat or you can use the taxi boats at 80 and 60 Kuna respectively. We walked round the headland to KUPARI and we wished we hadn't - the hotels are still there showing the bomb and firearm damage from the Croatian war in the nineties - a sad reminder of what the former Yugoslavia has been through. There is unlimited access to the hotels at the moment but you may have to fight your way through the overgrown gardens and wreckage to see any of it close - up. Mlini is a typical Croatian village with it's orange tiled roofs and cobbled streets but we would strongly recommend visiting Cavtat for it's harbour, pleasant walks and choice of restaurants and shops but obviously Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful (and busiest) cities we have ever seen. Enjoy your time in Croatia.

Stunning scenery from the annex, clean rooms serviced every day off our stay. The staff were all very helpful polite and honest. I suffer from Ceoliac disease which means i have a restricted diet and have to know ingredients are in the food, every night the chief met me to tell me what i could or could not eat even preparing individual things for me to eat if there was nothing that I fancied nothing was a problem to them. It was a sad day on the 16th of July we had to come home but we will always remember this trip our first to Croatia and hopefully it wont be long till we return to the Astarea Hotel.
"Nice hotel but rude staff"
07/16/14 fl0psybunny Port Talbot
I went to this hotel with Newmarket Holidays. Most people on the trip seemed to have rooms overlooking the car park, but I had spent one night there on another trip so requested a sea view room. We paid a large supplement for a double room for single use. The room is adequate and clean - no. 313. The aircon works but is rather ineffective as it is very old-fashioned. The view is nice from this room. It is in the sun in the afternoon. It has two single beds but they are rather narrow. 311 is similar. There is no fridge in the room which is a disadvantage. The TV only has Sky News and BBC news. I do not agree with a previous reviewer that the staff are friendly - rather the opposite. Everything seemed to be too much effort and customer service needs attention in this hotel. Newmarket Holidays does not provide local guides on the trips to Mostar and Montenegro which is a disadvantage. Also it is quite a distance from Dubrovnik and the steep hill to the main road means reliance on the shuttle bus, which has to be booked ahead and costs 50 kuna return. The cable car is worth it for the wonderful view of Dubrovnik but the shuttle bus will not stop there even if you ask and the man at the desk agrees to do so, so it's not worth asking. There are a couple of hundred steps to get up to it, but it is worth it. I would recommend the restaurant up there for a nice relaxing lunch. The buffet meals in the hotel have an extensive choice and the quality is good. Newmarket customers get a free bottle of water with the meal. Service is rather slow as staff will only get drinks if they are taking cleared dishes back on their trolleys. They scrape food off the plates which is rather offputting. The dining room is rather busy but there is room to eat on the terrace. Staff will begin to clear away 30 minutes before closing time so choice is limited from this time. Mlini is quite a small resort but there are a couple of nice eating places along the sea front. There are some bathing areas but they are small and rather crowded.
"Modern clean apartments"
07/16/14 AMD0310 Holywood, United Kingdom
We stayed in the apartments within the Hotel Astarea complex the first two weeks of July 2014 and were delighted with their standard. Rooms were larger than expected and very clean and bright. The view from the balcony was over the whole bay, one slight drawback of the balcony was that it got very hot in late afternoon so some form of awning would have been ideal. The pool area was also kept clean and was not too overcrowded. The restaurants were all within walking distance and off a high standard with menus suiting both adults and children. A handy shuttle bus was also available from the hotel to Dubrovnik and Cavtat. Overall ,no complains, a super location.
07/16/14 Jennifer C London, United Kingdom
We booked 2 apartments at this destination and the scenery was just stunning. We had read that each apartment slept 4, with a double bedroom and a sofa bed in the lounge. I was travelling with my son and daughter-in-law and 5 year old grandson. I decided to book a separate apartment for myself and was very glad I did. The apartments are small, and the bedroom is not air conditioned, the only air conditioner is just inside the front door. For 2 people, the apartments are ideal, but I really would not recommend any more than 2 people stay in them. The kitchens are well equipped, and the balconies spacious, and private. We ate breakfast in the hotel, it was consistently good, and the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The pool is large and there is a beach in front of it. There are several restaurants and bars and the food was always good. It is very clean. The only downside was the wifi provision which only worked in reception.
07/13/14 Harnser St. Neots, Cambs.
We stayed at the Hotel Astarea from June 29 to July 6 booking with Newmarket Holidays and were very pleased. Our room on the 4th floor was one of the updated rooms with fridge, good air-con and a super shower in the modern bathroom and wonderful views of the sea. Our friend who was travelling with us and had booked a single room was not so fortunate. Her room was very tatty with no air-con and sub standard, but after a trip to reception when she told them (in no uncertain terms that the room was unacceptable) she was moved to another one which was much better though smaller than ours. The Buffet meals were excellent, we had planned to eat out occasionally but had no need to. The swimming pool area was lovely as was the surrounding area. Dubrovnik is close by and easy to get to by hotel shuttle, boat or bus. Our holiday included four excursions, one a tour of Dubrovnik, Mostar, Montenegro and a boat trip to the Elefiti Islands (the only one a little disappointing). Don't miss the cable car in Dubrovnik up the mountain or hill really but the views are spectacular. When all the rooms at the Astarea are renovated I think it can call itself 4*
