Here the lake is at its widest point with regular ferry services to Bellagio and Varenna. Long favoured by the British, its Anglican church dates from 1891. The lakeshore lido has a pleasant terrace café.

After spending a total of 12 hours travelling we got to Hotel Britannia Excelsior only to find the room we requested with a balcony and lake view back in March was not available. Eventually, they managed to accommodate us with a balcony and view of the lake albeit at the side of the hotel where unfortunately, deliveries to the hotel and supermarket opposite woke us early each morning. However, they moved us after our third night to a room which was much superior than we had originally booked going out of their way to accommodate us in every way. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff towards us was first class. In my opinion although the hotel is comfortable it is very tired looking and could do with an overhaul especially benefitting from air conditioning in the rooms as the ceiling fans are totally inadequate. The location of the hotel (although on a busy road) gives you one of the most picturesque views of the lake overlooking Bellagio and Varenna, just beautiful. It is centrally located making visits into Switzerland easy. The ferry is just a short walking distance away. The food was very adequate and enjoyable for our needs although not much of a choice. The evening entertainment was very welcome although sometimes repetitive. All in all our stay at the Hotel Britannia was made very comfortable for us. We will definitely go back to Lake Como which truly is like being in fairy land.

We enjoyed our week long stay here, even though it wasn't without issues. As the building wasn't originally a hotel, all the rooms vary greatly in size, style and design. We requested to move from our first allocated room due to its cramped size. This was dealt with very professionally and we were very pleased with our next, much bigger room. We were later requested by the hotel to move again, due to a group booking. We were delighted with a palatial room, with lakeview. We witnessed quite a few people in reception asking for a room change, so don't be afraid to request better. The dining room is very impressive, but also quite cramped. This hotel is heavily frequented by British coach tours, so expect a bit of a scrum to get to the buffet at key times. The food quality is above average, but can get a little uninspirng after a few days. The menu is leaning heavily towards its ageing British market. Most customers are all inclusive, so mealtimes felt a little bit of a conveyor belt experience. We found all the staff very friendly and helpful, eager to please. The location is fabulous. The tourist triangle in the middle of the lake is easily reached by ferry, just a few minutes walk from the front door. We would use this hotel again without doubt.

Excellent location for the money. Hotel sits across lake como with a direct view of Bellagio. It is a short walk to the ferry which takes people across the lake. Price of hotel is reasonable for view. Needs upgrades to bathrooms and room decor.

The room was clean and the view from the balcony was fabulous. The hotel is old and could be improved upon greatly. There is no parking for the hotel. The staff was friendly but not very helpful with how the hotel services that were offered worked. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We had a room with French doors opening out on Lake Como. The hotel was well kept and very lively. A hot breakfast was served as well as sliced meats and cheeses, yogurt, fruit and more. we'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Reviewed by M of Muenchen on Aug 13, 2009
