Hotel Monterey Kyoto is conveniently located about 1 block from the restaurants, boutiques, and nightlife on Sanjo-Dori. The concierge was outstanding. The room was clean with modern decor. The beds were hard, and the room was small, but those are about standard in all the hotels in Japan. It was a good value, and I would recommend it to others.

This is a great hotel. It is well maintained both on the outside and in. Our room was very nicely appointed and the perk of free wifi access came in very handy. The staff was helpful and courteous and the location of the property was central to all the Kyoto sights. My two recommendations for improvement would be to have an ATM machine available somewhere in the hotel as it was difficult for us to find a machine in Kyoto that would accept MasterCard. The other would be to offer a greater variety of food at The Library, their bar. The two restaurants at the hotel are high end and if you are not in the mood for French or Japanese you need to look elsewhere for your dining which is good in that it gets you out exploring the city even more but can also be a hassle in the evening if you are exhausted from a day of sightseeing.

The hotel was perfect for our vacation to Kyoto. The location is perfect for being in the center of the city (where most tourist locations are quite spread out around town) We found it possible to walk or take a subway ride one or two stops to the main central Kyoto tourist sites. The subway stop near the hotel (karasuma) is also the transfer point for both lines that run the city. The hotel itself is decorated very much like a W. The rooms are very neat and clean and well decorated and the staff was extremely helpful. The concierge gave us multiple dinner recommendations and maps to places as well as arranged tickets for us to the Gion Center show. I would highly recommend this location!

I was very impressed with Hotel Monterey and upon first entering i was concerned that i had went to the wrong place. It' was so 'posh' and the staff so neat that i was shocked into thinking the money i paid wouldn't have bought this level of grandeur. Our first experience of accommodation in Japan was poor; we arrived at Kyoto only after having spent 1 week in an apartment in Tokyo; not even big enough to swing a cat in. They had lied about the number of beds available and everything was very basic. I expected better of a hotel but considering we paid only a little more i was very surprised by the quality of this hotel. The staff were always helpful and went out of their way to fill my bazaar requests for ironing equipment at odd times of the day. The cleaning staff made me feel like royalty because they were so polite and the room was always spotless. The rooms themselves were well outfitted with everything you could want and the design was modern, fresh and comfortable. After having spent a week on a lumpy bed this made a welcome change. The air conditioning was quiet and very effective and the tv was a good size. Location wise it is also good; being within walking distance of the main shopping/clubbing area of town and no more than 3 minutes away from the nearest bus stop or train station. I highly recommend this hotel and it deserves a 5/5 for every category.

We only stayed at the Monterey in Kyoto for one night, having spent two at the Monterey in Nagasaki. How different these were! The Kyoto hotel is modern yet full of character, reasonably priced (in Kyoto terms) yet very elegant. We tried the tasting menu in the Japanese restaurant, which was excellent. As in all classical Japanese cuisine, it was a shame to destroy the visual beauty of the dishes simply to enjoy the fine flavours of the food. The breakfast room was also very good - much better than at the Monterey Nagasaki.

Based on the hotels.com reviews, we booked our stay at the Hotel Monterey. The hotel was every bit as wonderful as described and more. Since public transportation is paramount to our vacations (we would never attempt driving in Japan), the location couldn't have been better, just one and a half blocks from the subway station Karasuma-Oike, and close to a city bus stop. The hotel was an easy walk to the Nashiki Market-a must see for visitors and the covered Teramachi shopping arcade. Also in the neighborhood are countless local restaurants, two convenience stores and even a Starbucks. The hotel cleaning staff paid attention to the smallest of details and care for personal items left out in the room. The front desk staff were extremely courteous and helpful and spoke enough English to take care of our every need. We also enjoyed the free pajamas in the room that were laundered nightly and returned. The bathroom had a huge soaking tub, with shower head that could be moved to three different levels and a heated toilet seat! We would definately stay here agaiin and in furture trips to Japan look for a Monterey Hotel in other cities.

This hotel was a quiet refuge in a very busy vacation. It is VERY convenient to the subway system in Kyoto, and convenient to the bus system too. The staff knew enough English that we could ask them anything. We asked them where the nearest laudry mat was, and even though they provide laundry service, they willingly told us. We asked about going to the movies and they helpfully gave us a piece of paper with the name of the movie written in Kanji so we would get into the right one, as well as directions to a theater nearby. We had fresh pajamas in the cupboard every day, and the bathroom items were of good quality, and very complete. The bathtub was so inviting I took my first bath in several years (yes, I'm a shower-er.) We also ate at the French restaurant at the hotel. It was well worth the price. I would highly recommend this hotel. They helped make our stay in Kyoto memorable.

This hotel has a European flair in decorations and motifs and is located centrally in downtown Kyoto. We originally wanted to get a hotel near the Kyoto train station (we arrived from Tokyo via the Shinkansen bullet train), but we came to Kyoto during the Cherry Blossom season and all major hotels near the Kyoto Train Station were booked. So we took the advice of fellow travelers and booked this hotel. It turned out to be a great decision. This hotel is centrally located to all major tourist attractions - most of which are walkable from this hotel. From the Kyoto Train Station, take the Karasuma subway line north 3 stops to Karasuma Oike Station. Get out at exit #6. Make a right, walk about 2 blocks past the book store and the Starbucks and arrive at the hotel. Service is excellent and rooms are very clean and comfortable - although a bit small by Western standards. The heated toilet seats are kinda nice, but the TV channels are limited as is Video on Demand, but we came to Kyoto not to sit in the hotel room. The hotel is located in the downtown business district and we didn't find too many restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Those on a tight budget can head over to Starbucks or the (one of a kind) Lawsons for a quick bite. We simply walked over to the Teramachi shopping arcade where plenty of restaurants and shops can be found. For a quick bite for those on the go, we found the Gourmet City grocery store to be great. We weren't very fond of having to turn in our hotel key to the front desk every time we left the room, but after we saw the size/weight of the key chain, this was no longer an issue. Overall, nice European style hotel in an excellent central location with easy access to the subway.

The Hotel Monterey Kyoto has to be one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in. The staff were exceedingly polite and efficient, even in spite of the fact that it was a very busy national holiday and all of Japan was visiting Kyoto to see the maple leaves change. The hotel staff graciously offered to securely store my baggage both prior to check-in and after check-out, and even took care to indicate they would be extra careful with my laptop computer. The room was spacious (by Japan standards) and very nice - luxurious even. The bed was comfortable, and the room was tastefully decorated. All the usual amenities were included, and there was even fresh loose-leaf green tea and a cute tea-set in the room. The hotel's location two blocks south of a subway station made getting to/from the hotel and the main Kyoto station for sightseeing very simple and economical.

Il est possible de se rendre à pied au chateau de Nijo et au palais impérial en comptant une demie heure de marche. Le personnel est très attentionné. Les réceptionnistes parlent anglais. The hotel is very clean and luxurious. Reception is in beautiful marble. Staff is very helpful, speak English quite well and some members speak although other languages (French), the concierge is quite good, offers information about the city and you can book excursions. I had a single room, not really big but well organized, decorated and with quality furniture, there's a flat TV screen, LAN, a fridge, kettle with tea, pyjamas, slippers... Bathroom was very clean with all toilet stuffs, bath with shower... The only bad point very small cocktails size!! I really enjoy Kyoto and that hotel!!!
