The hotel gave us a smoking room, we didn't realize it until we came back in the afternoon and we had to request for a room change. The Monterey was clean and had plenty of room which is unlike most hotels we stayed at in Japan. We even had a small table and desk in the room. You can smell smoke in the non-smoking rooms it is prevelant throughout the hotel. We were charged for an extra pillows and ice and also the hotel does not have english speaking staff. Feb 2011- My wife and I stayed in Hotel Monterey Ginza in Tokyo, Hotel Monterey Kyoto, and finally Hotel Monterey Sapporo. The first two locations were superior. The staff in Tokyo and in Kyoto were excellent and very helpful, As novices to the Japanese language, their English skills made our stay very enjoyable and the properties themselves were excellent. […] Having established a high level of expectation, we were disappointed upon our arrival in Sapporo. The staff did speak English much more that we spoke Japanese, but the level of service and hospitality was not equal. The hotel itself is very old. While it is well maintained, the outdated facilities combined with our disappointment in the staff left us less than satisfied. The Hotel Monterey Group has another location in Sapporo, the Hotel Monterey Elendorf. I will try that location on our next visit. Read more

I knew that Monterey hotel is one of the famous Japanese hotel chains. It was my first time to stay Monterey, and it was great to choose! The location was extremly close to Sapporo station. Moreover, almost famous tourist spots were very close to the hotel.(It is walkable). I stayed Semi-double, but it was spacious enough for two people.

Very easy to get to, and also very easy to go to other places (including Sapporo beer garden) using public transportation or even walking. But don't expect much in terms of facilities or neighborhood ambiance. No exercise gym, lobby, or other recreational facilities. However, high-speed internet (LAN) is free, and even the LAN cable is provided for free. Overall, if you want to stay at a nice, comfortable hotel from which you can explore many places, at a very good price, I would recommend this hotel very highly. If you wish to spend most of time at the hotel, no. One funny thing. We stayed 4 nights - the longest part of our trip to Japan. The hotel mainly aimed for Japanese visitors or wedding reception/banquet guests. The room we had was small compared to two other hotels we stayed in Japan. We asked about how to get Engish speaking channels only to be told none available and no access to Wifi other than cable connector for […] laptops. All instructions available in the room i.e. use television or internet cable was in Japanese only. We felt they could not care less about overseas visitors and their main objective is to keep this hotel for Japanese guests. My wife and I spent 4 nights in Sapporo on our honeymoon in March, as two stays of two nights (we stayed one night in Niseko). Location is very convenient - After getting off the train at JR Sapporo station, walk out of the south exit at street level (don't go underground), and turn left at the first street you see. Keep walking on this main street […] for about 5 mins, walking past the shopping tower ESTA on your left, towards the Vegas pachinko on the right hand side. Hotel Monterey is not a small hotel and should be visible when you get near Vegas - all up only a 6 min level walk from the station. Staff were accommodating and friendly, most spoke passable English except one girl who spoke fluent English as she had previously spent some time in California. Our first room was a double, not a large room but comfortable. Our second room was a twin which was much larger and had two bathrooms, however it faced inside the courtyard rather than out to the city. Both were styled in the theme of the hotel - olden style European but contain all the modern touches you expect - free LAN Internet access, LCD tv, air conditioning etc. Both rooms were non smoking as requested. Breakfast buffet costs about 1800 yen and is excellent, with a selection of western and Japanese items including fresh salad, real eggs, yoghurt etc. No gym facilities unfortunately to burn off the buffet. All in all, for what it costs this hotel is represents fantastic value - will definitely be back next year. Read more

One of the better hotels I have stayed at for a great location and reasonable cost. Literally 5 mins from sapporo station by walk. 10-15 mins from Sapporo TV tower, and 20-25 mins right in main town of Odori. 駅前を出たら、ホテルが見えます。徒歩数分で、トランクを転がして歩きましたがそれほど遠さは感じませんでした。地下鉄の駅は隣のブロックなので、とても近いです。予約ですが、禁煙リクエストをしていましたが、あいにく禁煙の部屋がなく、においがきつかったので相談したところ、別の消臭済みの部屋に換えてもらえました。そこは比較的匂いがましだったので、以後は快適に過ごせました。ただし、毎回そういう部屋が空いているわけでもないでしょうし、どうしても完全禁煙じゃないといけない、という人にはお勧めしません。しかしそれ以外は良かったので、また泊まっていもいいと思ったホテルです。
