This is my 2nd time at the Gem. Nice staff, and decent clean rooms. My only complaint is the airconditioning in the rooms. The Gem's airconditioners are a bit older, tend to make noise and cut off and on throughout the night. This last trip I had a really noisy one and didn't get very good sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Sufficient but not luxury"
This hotel is not a "gem" and is much lower quality than the other Gem hotels in manhattan.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Are was not the best but hotel was nice. The bed was really comfortable. We were on the 10 floor so maybe that's why the wifi was bad. Fridge and microwave in the roomwasvery convenient.Genuine Expedia guest review
The GEM Hotel worked very nicely for our long weekend in NYC. We appreciated the reasonable price, the pleasant staff, and--on a very hot weekend--the air conditioning!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Although the hotel pictures were accurate they were obviously taken with a wide angled lens as the room sizes were extremely small. The rooms were very clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel meant we were about a 15/20 minute walk from Times Square which was the main reason for choosing The Gem.Genuine Expedia guest review
If you are used to the size of Manhattan hotel rooms it's not bad, but it is a very small roomGenuine Expedia guest review

Great place near the convention center and not to far from anywhere you wanted to be. COuld be a little bit better of a surrounding area but nothing to worry too much about. I enjoyed it and would go back again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not bad overall, little pricey...but that's NY"
Being from Boston, I got my fair share of comments on my Red Sox hat, but the only one that involved possibly getting killed was from one of the lobby attendants. Only a joke, but should probably go with a lighter joke. The room was as small as expected, relatively clean. Sheets were beat up a bit, the wall paper is tearing at places, and the view was […] nothing I couldn't see from the dumpster across the street. That being said, the front desk was helpful, and the rest of the staff was polite. Not too bad overall. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great spot, close to a lot."
Really enjoyed the Hotel. Rooms were a little tight as with any NYC hotel, but the location can't be beat. It wasn't too expensive, and was worth the money for what we got out of it. Comfortable beds, clean bathroom, modern decor. The desk clerk was extremely nice, considering the people that were in front of us checking in were kind of dickish. "This place is a Gem!"
We had a wonderful time at this hotel during our trip to NYC. We were attending a conference at the Javits Center which was only a short walk away! Easy access to Penn Station train at 34th st. The bed and sheets were so comfortable and soft!! Very clean room and bathroom. the staff was always welcome to give directions or subway recommendations. They […] post the weather and events on a fun board as you leave the hotel everyday. Taxi break station at the dunkin donuts and fuel station right behind the hotel, very easy to grab a cab. taxi from lga was very reasonable....on 9th and 10th st there are plenty of restaurants to choose from on the way to the subway. We were even in a room right as you got off the elevator, and we never heard any noise! Please stay here... great place! We'll be back there for sure. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"New York International Auto Show"
My fiancé and I stayed here during a visit to NYC for the 2012 NYIASA. The hotel was very helpful and allowed us to drop off our bags early in the morning, attend the show all day and still check in late that evening. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The rooms are a little on the small side But I'm fairly sure that is due to the building being […] older. The rooms, while small, are very well furnished and decorated. The front desk person was rude, but that's nothing new if you've read the other reviews. The room was filthy, I found bubblegum or something of the sort inside the sheets... Disgusting "hotel".Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Small space but very friendly and helpful staff"
I chose this because it was practically next to my office and I did not want to walk far in the cold. The room was very tiny but clean. I needed a last minute affordable room, close to the studio I had a very early-starting all day meeting at the next day. "GEM Hotel - very near Javits Center"
Staff was very friendly. TV remote control did not work but I never got around to asking them to replace it because I was too buzy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The GEM Hotel Hudson Yards The hotel invested in new remotes for all of our room just last year. Some TV's need to be refreshed periodically in order to work perfectly. We are one of the closest hotels to the Javits Center. Our staff enjoy the time they are able to spend with our guests to provide the most personalble service available.
The hotel was in an ok location. The room was a bit small, but it didn't bother me other than the fact that it was in the BASEMENT!!! We were told that it was the only room in the whole hotel that only had one bed.It was the only room down there in the hotel staff quarters. There were racks with hangers on them by the door. The staff were going in and […] out of the door to the steps, which were located right next to our door, all night. The worst part of our stay was when we realized our shower did not work. Me and my boyfriend both tried for 10 minutes to get the shower to turn on, and when we called the front desk we were told that they don't know how to work the showers because they don't use them. I do not reccomend anyone stay at this hotel!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The GEM Hotel Hudson Yards We have a single room in our lower level. It is not a basement. The room has a full window that opens to the courtyard, not below ground. We are currently reorganizing the space next to the room and some items may have been left out in the open, however, no where it would affect any guests. The shower does work in this and all of our rooms and all of our staff are fully versed on the operations of all items in every room.
"The Gem Hotel-it looks like what you get"
Small, reasonably priced, great service, location perfect if you are staying around the midtown area. Wish bathroom was cleaner, but other than that, great place!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The GEM Hotel Hudson Yards We are diligently working to make sure that all areas of our guest rooms and public areas at at their best at all times. Our location and value make us a great choice in New York City. Being centrally located to all attractions and public transportation make us perfect for business and leisure.
These "boutique" chains need to be carefully examined before you check in. GEM seems to specialize in minimalism -- taking over a very drab building and trying (unsuccessfully in this case) the place into a modern hotel. The location of this hotel is horrible -- dreary, off the beaten track. Yes if you have a meeting at the Javitts Centre it works, […] but for anyone else, forget it. I was supposed to have a non-smoking room. On entering the room at the end of a long day, I was met with a smoky smell in everything. Then my shock turning on the lights -- the room is a king size bed... period. There is a tiny desk but the chair does not fit at the desk if a BODY sits in it. You cannot walk around the bed without removing the chair completely. Closet had so much junk in it, no room to hang clothes. Plus 50% of the hangers in the closet were actually BROKEN. Then the bathroom - sink was cracked. While there were some extras in the room (sufficient towels, come toiletries), all in all it was awful. Minimal cable TV channels (less than 30 working), and many were not of any interest. The one positive -- the bed was comfortable once I turned up the heat and made the room comfortable -- but that lingering foul smell had my eyes wateding all night so I checked out a day early and went home. Oh -- they had a bottle of (free??) water but it had already been "opened" and had what appeared to be simple tap water in it. I do not recommend this hotel at all. "Good value for New York"
Three of us stayed in a room with two doubles. The room was small with not too much manuvering room, but we only needed a place to sleep for two nights. "Not a boutique hotel"
I've been to Gem in Chelsea, truly a boutique hotel. This location is not in the best area, there aren't many street lights and not many people are walking on that area at night Cab ride to Chelsea is only six dollars. Get on a cab. Response by The GEM Hotel Hudson Yards We are a boutique hotel that caters more to business travelers going to the Javits Center or guests who want to be closer to Times Square. All of our GEM Hotels have a different distinct style that reflect their guests and neighborhood. The neighborhood we're in currently in undergoing new development and is completely safe and secure. There are some fantastic restaurant locally that your can experience a slice of New York. Thanks for giving us a try and I hope you may think of us again. Cheers
We had a King size bed with 18" on each side of the bed and 1 foot of space at the end then a small desk. This was the smallest room I have ever stayed in. BUT it was very clean, the front desk personel were VERY helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"College trip to new York"
We could not have had a better experience with our hotel. The hotel held our bags all day before and after our stay and bent over backwards to help us out. Hands down it was the worst experience I've ever had staying at a hotel in NYC. The staff was very friendly and nice, but the place itself is terrible. Oh, where should I even begin? The super-small rooms, the non-functional TVs that have only sports channels, no room service, no mini-bar, and - NO INTERNET. I was staying there for a week and there […] WAS NO INTERNET - not wireless and not wired. Terrible. Avoid at all cost. The rooms aren't cheap either. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Clean and courteous but location isn't great"
The hotel is the diamond in the rough in the neighborhood it is in. Situated near the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel there is a lot of traffic noise and you have to cross a ton of traffic to get to the hotel coming and going into midtown. I wouldn't recommend this if you are a tourist. However, if traveling for business like me and most likely taking […] cabs it is easy to access. I tried to find their preferred parking but couldn't and there isn't much parking nearby - something to keep in mind. But on the up side the staff was great, the hotel was pretty quiet and it was very clean. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

hi All, This hotel is decrepit. It smells, the beds are very uncomfortable, the bathroom is falling apart and there are bugs. Please avoid at all costs... Not worth even a cheap fare.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"NYC is clearly very expensive"
I booked 3 nights online through hotels.com. The room was very small - I estimate approximately 200 square feet. It was attractively furnished, had a flat screen TV, and free wireless internet was included. The bathroom was updated, clean and plenty of towels were provided daily. There is no restaurant or food of any kind on the premises. The hotel […] is not located in a great neighborhood but Times Square is only a 20 minute walk away and it's easy to flag a taxi if you want one. The hotel staff was very friendly. In short I consider this to be little more than a comfortable, albeit expensive, crash pad but would stay there again if I could not find similar accomodations for less money. I travel a lot and the rate I paid felt very expensive for what I got. I understand this is more a statement about the cost of accomodations in NYC than it is a reflection on the relative value of this hotel. Considering midtown hotels are probably 2-3 times the price for a basic room, this might be the best one can hope for when visiting the Big Apple. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"a hidden gem?"
I needed to stay in the neighborhood, and this was the second hotel I've been in within half a mile. I felt safe, the room was clean, and the staff was nice. Negatives were having to go all the way to the basement for ice. My view was not inspiring and my air conditioning was challenged by the really hot conditions. But it probably does great in normal […] summer. There really wasn't any good gathering place to hang out. Was it worth the price? I'm not sure. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
It's a no-frills hotel (including the staff), great value for how clean and quiet the rooms are. The location is just so-so - there's really not much around the hotel at all, got a little scared walking by myself to the hotel at night. Cabs were easy to get. There's a corner gas stations where all the cabbies hang out. No restaurant, no store, no […] wine. Vending machine and ice downstairs. The front desk lady was incompetent. I booked via hotels.com, got confirmation number. Called hotel and they said that they have my reservation but didn't have any available rooms. I'd have to call back hotels.com and cancel my reservation. After back and forth on phone with Hotels.com and the GEM hotel for a solid hour, FINALLY she admitted that there was one room left with double beds. But since I booked a king sized bed, that's why she told me they had no more rooms. ???? UGH. Why didn't she just tell me that in the first place? Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great value for money"
We stayed here between 9th-12th November and would definitely recommend. The rooms are small and compact but they have everything you need such as tea/coffee making facilities, bottled water, toiletries, bath robes, iron all included in the price. The group we travelled with didnt have half of these facilities included in their hotel & they had paid […] alot more. We were hardly in our room as there is so much to see and do in new york. We only went back to shower and sleep. The shower was amazing and the bed was so comfy. The staff were all really friendly and willing to help. The location was great and we were able to walk into time square in about 10-15 mins. Taxis were also available right outside the hotel. If your planning on spending quite a bit of time in your room then this hotel may not suit as the rooms are small. But if you just want somewhere to return to afterc a hectic day sightseeing to shower, change, sleep then this hotel is perfect. Its in a great location, its very clean, friendly staff and very good value for money. We would definitely look to stay here again on our next trip to new york. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
