"The GEM is definitely a GEM! Great Experience!"
We stayed at the GEM Hotel in Midtown this past weekend. They offered the best rate we could find in the area for a hotel room with 2 beds, which is why we booked it. We were a little concerned that it would be too far from Penn Station, Times Square and Madison Square Garden for walking with little kids (age 6 and 9). However, we were pleasantly surprised […] at how convenient it was. We walked from Penn Station to the hotel with all of our luggage and both kids in tow, being totally unfamiliar with the City, and it only took about 10 minutes. The walk to Times Square took about 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. The hotel staff was very friendly and welcoming, the room was very clean and the beds comfy. The bedding and towels were really nice quality and the water pressure in the shower was great. I'm a bit of a water pressure snob, so that was important for me. The room wasn't very big, but I think that's normal in NYC. It was certainly big enough for us to sleep and shower in, which is all we needed the room for anyway. The hotel staff was very accomodating and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!! We'll be back! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Hotel was nice, quiet and next to 10th Ave. which is a great street to get a cab heading north because cabs run up 10th Ave. a lot due to gas stations on that street.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Small and basic space with terrible grinding sound vibrating every time the elevator was in use. Bed was fine, heat was hard to adjust properly . View was of an air shaft . Good location for the Javits center, otherwise quite a desolate hike past the Lincoln Tunnel entrance !Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Our room was very small for 2 people. Location was not in the best neighborhood.Genuine Expedia guest review
I loved the hotel, small rooms but very nice and clean. The staff was super nice and helpfull. Although the hotel is a little far from the main attractions it was close enough to walk our way there.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The room is very small for 4 people, but very clean. The vicinity is close to food chains.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I will come backGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"cool location, great place for the budget!"
Very great location, and the room was very clean! close to most locations in new york, doesn't get much better! especially for the price!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very convenient for Javitz center"
The Gem worked out perfect for my last minute booking for trade show. Its a short walk to Javitz center. Gas station around the corner has Dunkin Donuts and cabs to go wherever you need to in the city.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convient to all the places we wanted to see"
Your desk staff was very friendly and accommodating. Great value for price paid.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Desk clerk tried to switch me to a Comfort Inn"
Nice place, overpriced, small rooms, desk clerk tried to switch me to the Comfort Inn Times Square, after telling me the hotel was full, at 3:05PM. What a scam. I said no way, I'd call Hotels.com, he gave me my (pre-paid!) room. Very close to Javits Center, nice b'fast place around corner (The Cafe Grind), but won't stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Super friendly and helpful staff. Room very clean."
Greeted by very friendly and helpful staff. Very knowledgeable about the area and gave great directions. Will try to stay there again during future visits.Genuine Expedia guest review
Really nice place, clean, quiet, clost to the Javits Center, lots of great local restaurants close by amazing pillows! Highly recommended if you are looking to avoid the hustle & bustle of the city & tourists!Genuine Expedia guest review
"It's not luxury but the location is good."
This is a very basic boutique hotel with limited offerings. Don't expect room service, movies in the room, or any service you're used to from a Hyatt, Hilton, or Marriott. It's a simple sleep there but do all of your entertaining outside kind of place. The staff are friendly enough but don't expect extra effort from them. The rooms and hallways are […] small but you're not going to NY to stay in your hotel are you? Overall, it's a fine place to stay to just sleep and wash up. The rooms would be over priced anywhere else but for NYC it's fair. If you want a hotel away from Times Square near the garment district/Hells Kitchen area, it'll be a good place to consider. "Nice little spot"
The hotel was a nice little spot. Cons: It had only 39 rooms (according to the front desk attendant), the rooms were a little small and it's a few blocks away the action of Time Square. Pros: Great value for the money, the rooms were very clean and well maintained, the rooms didn't lack for anything (big flat screen tv's included) and the area was safe […] and close to the Hudson. "Great Hotel for the Price (but thin walls)"
This is an excellent hotel for the price - and a good location, too; not too far from the mainstream "attractions." They have an excellent staff who were very approachable and helpful. (Good customer service seems a rare find these days but these guys have it.) The only drawback we found was that the walls are paper thin; we could hear *everything* […] going on next door in the middle of the night. That said, just make sure if you are sensitive to that (or booking with a child,) you let them know. With the attentiveness of the staff, I am sure they will accommodate! "Great Price & Comfortable for 1 night."
Great Price for a 1 night stay. Booked the Gem online. I had checked out a lot of other places that were way higher priced. Very Friendly and Helpful STAFF. Small, clean room with comfortable King bed. It had all my wife & I needed for an overnight in NYC. If you don't need a lot of extras like food, entertainment and bar, this works. Parking right […] across the street. Walking distance to Times Sq. and the Subway was short. The Gem Hotel is a place that I would stay at again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Room smelled like mold and the elevator was brokenGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Staff was excellent, but the hotel location is very bad. It is in a remote area and at least four blocks from any level of civilization. So, it was very difficult to go out at night unless using a cab which is a horrible thing to do in NYC.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Fairly decent hotel, smaller rooms"
The place is a bit away from the main streets/avenue in manhattan. The rooms are small and the hotel doesnt have a restaurant, which is sad.Genuine Expedia guest review
"good location as its 5 min walk from time sq"
My stay was only for two nights but was all i wanted clean queen bed, clean bathroom some of the fixings an fittings were delicate and workmanship on tiles looked to be improved but other than that great place to get your head down and then get out an enjoy the sights of manhattan close to everything including Penn Station subway very close so access […] to the rest is a few minutes away :-)) reccommended to the shoppers and sight seeing people who don't want to stay in the hotel room. "Hotel for a girls night out"
We got into NYC at 5 am and were looking for somewhere to stay. The hotel staff was very helpful and because I am a flight attendant they let us check in early. This is now the only hotel I will stay in when I travel to NYC.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very close to Javits Ctr."
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is quite basic but the price was low and it was amazingly close to the Javits Ctr. That means the neighborhood is crummy, of course, but the convenience was perfect.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"not our booking"
We book a room with two double beds arrived at 11 am left our bags at the hotel and return at 6 pm and the only room that was available was room with one double bedGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"not much for the money"
hardly qualifies as boutique. poor quality mattresses, scuffs on walls, aesthetically ordinary, far from subway and anything a guest might want to do. Laughed when told by staff they offered complimentary water in the room. Wow,, I thought, that is a special bonus!Genuine Expedia guest review
"they try hard"
very nice and attentive staff - decent (small) room - but tough neighborhood and bad location for either nightime fun or work downtownGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent room - ugly hotel"
The room was tiny but nice linens and frankly well renovated. It's just a shoebox of a hotel with one of those nondescript lobbies with a desk like you're in Eastern Europe. Down a sketchy part of 36th street. It doesn't live up to the photos. Or the price. There must be a better place to stay in NY for $300.Genuine Expedia guest review
The Gem was good enough, was in town for a convention at the Javits center, very convenient location. Our room was clean, small but typical for NYC.Genuine Expedia guest review
Christina at the front desk was very helpful. She was great. :)Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This is an okay hotel. My boyfriend and I come here often. The rooms are kind of small but its just enough to rest and go out sight see around. Every time we have been here the ac has worked and the linens were always clean. Cant say much for the service; due to the fact that there isnt really any room service. But if and when I need help they always […] assisted me. One occasion I have lost my phone and I got it returned the same day. Its close to shops, 34th street, the movies and everything else. "A decent place for West side business"
Overall fit the bill and a good value. Main advantage was that I had business on the West side and was within walking distance. Room small as expected, but kept up well and had all the necessary amenities. Wake up call came ten minutes late, a bit challenging getting the temperature just right between hot and cold, neighborhood absolutely nothing to […] speak of, even a little intimidatingly vacant but more than adequate for quick, semi stylish, moderate priced convenience. "Quite the little GEM in the Big Apple!"
Staff was super friendly. Room was very clean. So happy that we found such a lovely place to stay during our trips to NYC.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The customer service was sub-par. The room was miniscule and dirty. If you do stay there, make sure you ask not to be put in the basement. You will be right next to the employee break room and the public restroom and you won't get a minute of sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Fair price, average hotel"
Reasonable prices for an ok hotel. But it's a bit of a walk from public transportation, and not a very inspiring neighbourhood.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Front desk staff friendly & extemely helpful. Bathroom nice but seat was not clean. One bathrobe for double occupancy, no shower caps. Nice blackout shade but no curtains, hence privacy but no light. Furniture too large for the room & the tele remote was held together with dirty tape (?). Small, quiet, way out of the way.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Rooms are very small. I would of liked a refrigerator. The TV did not have a lot of channels. Getting checked out Elevator was not working. Service was good. We needed extra creamers and the attended went out of the way for us.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was much smaller than expected for four adults. However, the room was very clean and quiet, especially it was near an elevator. The location was much further from the hub bub and located in an up and coming neighborhood. Overall the experience was a good one and would definitely stay there again.Genuine Expedia guest review
I loved way better than I expectedGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Reasonable price, nice hotel!"
I was apprehensive about the hotel for the great price on a holiday weekend, but was pleasantly surprised. Staff was very friendly (they upgraded my room to a higher floor once they learned it was my birthday!), room was clean and very decently sized. Not much to do in the surrounding neighborhood but only a 6 dollar can ride to pretty much everywhere […] you'd want to go. I would definitely stay there again! "Great Hotel for the money"
This was much nicer than an equivalent hotel we stayed in last year. The neighborhood was decent and it was an easy walk to Times Square. The room was tiny and tight but clean and up to date. They also had bathrobes in the rooms which was a nice plus. The only thing it really lacked was a business center. I was unable to print a boarding pass for my […] return flight. Other than that, everything was great. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Decent Hotel for the location."
I've had two stays in the past 3 weeks in this hotel. First trip my AC had something wrong with it. It made noise and constantly cut off and on throughout the night resulting in very little sleep. My most recent stay I discovered how paper thin the sound barrier is with the doors. There was a group of high school kids that roamed the very small hallways […] and stairwells till 3 am every night. Not great if you are a business traveller. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
is ok for the price, for a family (four) the room is very litlle, the clean is ok, our room was new (#301). I think that, It was a good convenient (price - quality)Genuine Expedia guest review
This is my 2nd time at the Gem. Nice staff, and decent clean rooms. My only complaint is the airconditioning in the rooms. The Gem's airconditioners are a bit older, tend to make noise and cut off and on throughout the night. This last trip I had a really noisy one and didn't get very good sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
