Great hotel in Bangkok's Chinatown, and about a 5-10 minute walk from the Hua Lampong subway station. Easy to find, and our room was quiet despite the hotel being on the main drag. The hotel thoughtfully includes a guide to the street food in the area, which is top notch.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Exceptional hotel in Bangkok Chinatown"
Shanghai Mansion is located at the epicenter of Bangkok's Chinatown about a 10 minute walk from the train station. The hotel sits amongst all the hustle and bustle of street food vendors and restaurant fronts in Chinatown, though is easily distinguishable. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel maintained a clean, relaxing presenc […] e. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Didn't feel like they were looking out for us"
The hotel itself was fine. I didn't feel like they went above and beyond for us. The one thing that annoyed me the most is that the man who nags us to get a taxi/tuktuk hailed by him, he never negotiated a good price! It was always on the high side. The final straw was a bit late to complain, but the woman at the desk said the taxi ride to the airport […] would be NO MORE than 500 baht. I argued because our taxi ride in was 273 baht. She assured me it would be less. Then the man got a taxi and told him we would pay 500! When I insisted he use the meter, he got upset and talked to the concierge. They both tried to tell me that I wouldn't worry about paying more that 500 with highway fees. I stood my ground and ended up paying 350 total. Won't stay there again! "Loovvvvvve the decor"
I love this place! The hotel is beautifully decorated, mirrors strategically placed give an illusion and paper lanterns in various shapes are funky. This hotel has a modern edgy spin to it with a bird cage in the shower to give you the sense of connecting with nature. Further, there are mixes of textures of silk, leather and an industrial floor that […] is quite nice, dimmed lighting sets a relaxing mood, doors close by a wooden latch. There were complimentary snacks, the room was perfect except for the hard bed and various smells throughout the day, (they had oil scents in the main lobby, they may consider that within the rooms). Staff were super friendly and very helpful, except for one lady at the front desk I would give the staff a score of 4.75 if I could. Wifi is free. They also have excellent literature with maps leading back to the hotel and other tourist attractions. I would stay here again Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Lovely place but uncomfortable w/ tour overcharge"
Hotel was good but overcharged for tour service and Airport transfer service. If you want reasonable price just go to Khao San Road. There are a lot of travel agency and the price is like even less than half of hotel's.Genuine Expedia guest review
probably not being from Asia this hotel strike me even more. but i loved it. the style, the details, a pretty different option, friendly staff, extremely big room, amazing decoration that makes you feel in a different place and era. i really enjoyed my stay. only two things i didn't like: i didn't have opportunity to try the food (i wish i had), and […] i wish i had stayed longer than 2 nights. if i had to think about any watch out, the only one could be that it is not convenient if you come for shopping or to the nicest areas of the city. but i had a few days at siam square area a week earlier to compensate that, so this experience at chinatown and this hotel was a wonderful twist to end the vacation on a different note. how often do you find a hotel you, your wife and your teen son all love? "Budget Luxury Hotel with Character"
My wife and I had a great experience for our night at Shanghai mansion. The lobby was pretty minimal and unassuming (though I think they're working on renovating it), but once we got to our room we were delighted. The interior design was delightful: the lighting was very tasteful, the layout made the room feel more spacious, the decorations had good […] oriental character, and the large bathtub was one of the better ones we've used. Our room had a frosted window that we couldn't see out of, but the room felt spacious enough that It didn't bother us at all. Wifi was a bit slow (~0.4mbps down) in the room, but was better than nothing. We also had a little trouble with the login, but it worked eventually. Really this was our only complaint; everything else was exceptional. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. Even with a very late arrival, we were greeted with hot tea and cold towels. It was a great hotel for the price.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Enjoyed my stay"
The room and hotel are great. My only complaint was the door to the room has two windows next to it. These windows have very sheer shades that let a lot of light in from the common area. That was a little annoying when trying to sleep. The surrounding area is interesting but has no BTS or public transport. You'll need to taxi it to other parts of town. […] Breakfast was great. Overall value was great and I'd stay again if in Chinatown. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great boutique/themed hotel"
It was a very comfortable stay in a very nicely done boutique hotel with a great ambiance. If you like the markets in Chinatown, it is also a fantastic location.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best Value Hotel"
I've been staying in 5 stars hotel for my business traveling and decided to try out this boutique hotel for my own vacation. The check in process and friendliness of the staff was the best I've ever encountered. The interior decor and use of colors were tastefully done. My 5th floor room was super quiet in comparison to the hustle and bustle Chinatown. […] For the very reasonable price that I paid, I believe it's the best deal you can find around the Chinatown area in Bangkok. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"What a gem. Would rate service a 10 if I could."
Beautiful hotel, extraordinary service. I expected lots of noise because of the Chinatown location but my room was very quiet. Nicely appointed room. The bed was very firm, which I like (slept like a baby) but if you are used to falling into a pillow top it may be too firm. Some of Bangkok's best and most interesting food is within 5 blocks of the hotel. […] Will definitely stay again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Boutique hotel with character"
This was our third visit to the hotel on this trip, and we enjoyed the experience. There were a few annoyances, such as the difficulty of getting a taxi when we left the hotel and the fact that the staff wanted to charge us for making a phone call to get restaurant reservations. Overall, good value with excellent breakfast and attentive staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
Would have been five stars if the drinks at the hotel bar were not so weak! Other than thatbit was awesome. Good location, very helpful staff, and very clean.Genuine Expedia guest review
Good, clean hotel located in the core of Chinatown. Amazing breakfast included.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Chinatown at its best"
Excellent experience. All as advertised. Visited hotel prior to stay (working in BKK), tried to make reservations via eMail but no answers. Website reservations want you to to submit a blank charge authorization...I'd never do that...better rates at online engines anyway. Good location in heart of Chinatown. Walk to riverboats, tuktuk to train or metro […] and even Wat Pho possible. Clean, interesting, different. Breakfast pretty good; interesting Asian dishes. Friendly folks though English knowledge falters somewhat (but hey - we're in Thailand, right?). Overall a 4.5/5 experience. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Highly recommend the Hotel!"
We would definitely go back! Highly recommend it! Very nice hotel! Great service! Wonderful breakfast! Right in the heart of Chinatown! FYI...The only downside to this hotel is that wifi is slow.Genuine Expedia guest review
The staff at the hotel is very friendly and helpful. It is an older hotel that doesn't feel old, but has the charm of a classic style. The rooms are a little on the small size, but plenty big for two people for the night. LCD TV's, wifi, and mini fridge makes it all very comfortable and convenient.Genuine Expedia guest review
for the price i paid its a little bite on the high side for this hotel and the hotel is far away from everything. located in china town which is very crowded at nite.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"This hotel gets better and better"
This was my second stay at the Shanghai Mansion. The hotel has been completed... it was still under construction the first time. It is really pretty. The breakfast is much better and the new restaurant is a pleasant space. The staff is still really friendly and speaks good English. There is now live entertainment in the hotel. There was a Nat King Cole […] cover band in the bar at night. They were really fun to hear.... for free. The hotel is in the beginning of Chinatown which is a little inconvenient because traffic there is terrible. It is within a 10 minute walk of the river taxi and the Metro. I really don't mind the fact that it is where it is. Chinatown is a destination in itself with many restaurants and a vibrant market. I really reccomend this hotel. It just gets better and better. Nice hotel, the room decorations were great. I stayed here for one night and ordered room service and it took an hour and a half. I actually fell asleep waiting. "Shanghai Mansion - Chinatown, Bangkok"
This hotel is an absolute gem -located in the middle of the wonderful yet chaotic chinatown, the hotel was peaceful, cool, beautifully decorated and great value for money. "Nice boutique hotel"
The Shanghai Mansion has all of the benefits and disadvantages of a boutique hotel. The decor was gorgeous and you truly felt like you were going back in time to a merchant house. The rooms were smaller than I probably would have gotten at another luxury hotel. The staff did struggle with English but I was able to get by. The Chinatown location was […] nice but it was definitely an urban location in the thick of things. You walk out the door and you are immediately in the midst of street vendors and tuk-tuk drivers. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would not hesitate to recommend it. However, I'm not sure it would fit everyone's taste. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Shanghai Mansion in Bangkok"
The hotel itself is adorable, but Chinatown area. Dirty streets and lousy places to eat, with not option of western food what so ever. Commuting is the major issue because it's a 10-15 minutes walk to the MRT (subway), which is not properly connected to the BMT (surface train) that goes to the main areas. Taxis don't go there often and when they go, […] they either refuse to stop or want to rip you off on the prices. "Little House of Horrors"
Pros: 1. Staff very friendly and helpful (within language limitations) 2. Very nice rain-style showerhead 3. Free mini-bar in room - oreo-style cookies, pepsi, tea and water 4. Free internet (very slow, but nice to have when it is available) Cons: 1. Very poor security.. Security staff allows thugs to hang around entrance of hotel, as thugs make threatening […] gesture and comments at/to guests as guests enter and leave hotel. Complaints to hotel management (including general manager) were in vain. Instead of driving them away, hotel staff said these people were actually good friends of security staff, well known to them, and were no threat. 2. Poor quality of breakfast: cockroach crawling across bread, spoiled juice, wait-staff cannot understand english well enough to take an order for contents of an omelet. 3. Central air conditioning in room. Room on checkin was very hot, slow to respond to air conditioning thermostat control on wall in room. 4. Internet often unavailable in room, kept logging me off, slow response. 5. Plastic "boards" in shower in room, have sharp ridges, apparently intended as a non-slip device, but those ridges are like standing/walking on sharp rocks: they Hurt!!! 6. Poor security. 7. Poor security. 8. Poor security - dangerous and threatening characters allowed to hang around hotel entrance, make threatening gestures, and hurling taunts at guests as they enter and leave hotel. Stayed at the Shanghai Mansion based on the pictures and reviews. The room was exactly as described. The hotel was beautiful and I enjoyed walking out of my room to enjoy the view of the water garden. The concierge was superb and assisted us with helpful information and in getting taxis to our destinations. The tub was definetly large enough for two […] people, as was the daybed in our room. "Shanghai Mansion - Hidden gem in Chinatown"
This hotel was distinctive for many reasons. The room was uniquely decorated and the common areas were equally beautiful. The room had a comfy bed, hot shower, good temperature, and low noise. The hotel provided a good breakfast, nightly entertainment, and good location. The hotel is in Chinatown and is within walking distance from the Golden Buddha […] and the basement of the hotel has a grocery, which isn't mentioned in reviews. "Old fashioned China in the middle of busy Bangkok"
As soon as you enter the hotel you are struck by the quiet, cool and calm old world charm and atmosphere. Large spiral staircase, huge fish pond, big comfortable chairs to relax in. Mod cons such as free internet are also there. The rooms, with their 4 poster beds are again old world but very quiet and comfortable. Not for those wanting bright new slick […] 5 star stuff but I loved it and would go back. The only issue is taxi's did not know where it is so take a good map so you can direct them. tranquil rooms in bustling chinatown location. fabulous night street food on the corner. great price w no nickel-diming on internet, etc. only negative is that there is no natural light into rooms (no noise either). would go back.Genuine Expedia guest review
"china town experience"
Very attentive staff. Hotel let down by lack of a pool and current renovations that can be noisy during the day time. But highly recommend this hotel if you are only in Bangkok for 3 nights or less, due to location, China town is ok and may appear slightly shabby during daylight hours but comes alive at night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Still under renovations"
In the heart of china town is this self acclaimed 4 star hotel. The biggest concern are the key entry doors that can easily be broken down and lax security that accompanies it. "Great Service with a lot of Charactre"
This was a great little hotel, right in the heart of China Town. The rooms are starting to show their age a little, and the hot water for the shower was a bit lacking, but don't let that put you off. The location and the staff more than make of for this very, very minor quibble. It's also worth noting that it's about a 20 minute walk to the MRT station […] (it may look a little nearer on the map), but taxis are very cheap, so it's easy to get there. "Quiet haven in the insanity of Chinatown, Bangkok"
Room nicely decorated, very quiet (with the exception of construction noise during the day, which we were apprised of before our stay). Excellent housekeeping (they even folded my husband's underwear...poor housekeepers). Located in the heart of Chinatown, which is a blessing and a curse. It's near all kinds of things to do and see- hundreds of shops […] and restaurants on the same street, temple of the Golden Buddha within ten minute walk, Hualumpong train station and MRT station within 15 minute walk (although across some INSANE intersections, the key is to walk when the Thais go!). However- getting a cab to take you there is difficult. Only ONE taxi took us right away, others would simply say no or try to charge us some ridiculous amount. There are a few reasons for this- Chinatown is SO busy it actually makes other parts of Bangkok look like the traffic is flowing nicely; Chinatown's roads are difficult to navigate and are mostly one-way; and landmarks are very difficult to spot in Chinatown because everything is so densely packed. We walked by the hotel at least once when we first arrived, even though it has a large sign. For the price- great value, but I would warn anyone staying that the location, while convenient in some regards, is a nightmare for cabs home. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"amazing, beautiful rooms, friendly helpful staff"
fabulous, character rooms which feel luxurious. The free mini bar, silk dressing gowns, good quality toiletries, snacks around the communal seating areas, lovely surroundings, comfy bed, deep large bath tub all make for a perfect stay.
