"china town experience"
Very attentive staff. Hotel let down by lack of a pool and current renovations that can be noisy during the day time. But highly recommend this hotel if you are only in Bangkok for 3 nights or less, due to location, China town is ok and may appear slightly shabby during daylight hours but comes alive at night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old World Charm and Class!"
When we said that we were staying at the Shanghai Mansion to the agents at the tourists desk in the airport they were highly impressed. Once arriving at the hotel after a long day of travel we quickly understood and agreed with their reaction. The service, the ambiance, the decor, the food, even the toiletries, everything - we were simply blow away. […] I have told all my friends and family that if they ever have the occasion of visiting Bangkok that they must stay at the Shanghai Mansion!! It's location was also very convenient to many major tourist attractions! We absolutely LOVED the Shanghai Mansion and would love to stay there again!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Six of us stayed in three Mei Hua rooms, for three nights, at the Shanghai Mansion. The rooms are not large but they are very clean and comfortable. The hotel is very well positioned for the Day Markets and to many restaurants. There were reservations going on at the time we were there but no inconvenience to us except that the ground floor restaurant […] was out of action and dinner was at the Cotton bar on the 3rd floor and had a limited menu, but good jazz music while you eat!. This would not have an issue had my daughter not been on crutches from a swimming incident on Koh Chang. We also took taxis to the river, for a Longtail river cruise (taxi-80Bht) and to MBK shopping centre (57Bht). Be sure to get a metered taxi or a firm price otherwise. Staff are very friendly, as with everywhere that I have been in Thailand. Is, on the 'Street desk' was very helpful with directions, grabbing taxis off the street etc. Thanks Is. There is also a Tour desk on the ground floor for day and multi night trips from Bangkok. In all, a very enjoyable stay and I would definitely recommend the Shanghai Mansion to anyone heading to Chinatown. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful Chinatown gem"
The most beautiful room I have ever stayed in! Free soft drinks, beer and snacks. Never been to Chinatown in BK but it's great spot and they have a free tuk tuk to temple. Breakfast buffet is huge mix of Asian and Western; lovely. Giant indoor pond with fish. Nice staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Not how it looks in the pictures"
Very expensive for what it is. Dingy rooms. Has seen better days. We checked out the same day as we were disappointed and marched down the road with our bags to get a taxi...which was selectively chosen, encouraged to get a tuk tuk (with loads of bags !)...eventually pointed us to hua lamphong station which we walked to (with loads of bags!).Genuine Expedia guest review
"Still under renovations"
In the heart of china town is this self acclaimed 4 star hotel. The biggest concern are the key entry doors that can easily be broken down and lax security that accompanies it. The breakfast is brilliant and staff are friendly. If you like the smells and crowds of china town this is the place. For booze and fun, this isn't for you...better off down […] near patong. "good location for few days in bangkok"
overall nice place to stay for couple of days, improvement area : mattresses are a bit hard and coffee and tea at breakfast to be made on request , not left simmering in a pot for long.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Chinatown hotel"
The best features of this hotel is its location in busy chinatown and its amazing decor. We stayed in a suite and could not have been more comfortable. The aspect that detracted from an excellent rating was the restaurant, which lacked in both food and atmosphere, and general information. While there was a tourist information desk, we could not seem […] to get any information from the staff manning the desk. We were provided with a stylized map on check in, but this did not include the alleyway, which, let's face it, are the most exciting aspect of the area. Once we asked, a better map was presented. Both of these were only small aspects, but took the gloss off an otherwise lovely stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful enchanting hotel in crazy China Town"
Travelling to 10 countries in a row for work. Bangkok trip was my week off. Need a place to relax... found it at the Shanghai Mansion. It was a peaceful and calm retreat in the heart of fierce China Town. Lots of people, food, shops. Really enjoyed ourselves.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Service with a lot of Charactre"
This was a great little hotel, right in the heart of China Town. The rooms are starting to show their age a little, and the hot water for the shower was a bit lacking, but don't let that put you off. The location and the staff more than make of for this very, very minor quibble. It's also worth noting that it's about a 20 minute walk to the MRT station […] (it may look a little nearer on the map), but taxis are very cheap, so it's easy to get there. Design chic in the heart of Chinatown. Staff are very helpful . We booked because it was highly rated, and iits design and style are so distinctive. It was the best choice we could have made . Tuk tuk ride to the nearest metro station, HuAtoki Lamphong, should be 50 baht, but may go up to 70 in heavy traffic. The hotel offers free tuktuk rides at set […] times of day to favorite sites such as the Grand Palace and MBK shopping centre. Book the day before - they are popular. "Crazy but Cool"
The hotel was very good, upon entry reception brought out Thai tea and the hotel staff could do enough for us. The décor was so different than any other we had ever seen before.....Great hotel, would definitely go again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Nice hotel but no facilities and they were renovating while we were there. Location is good in china town.Taxis will rip you off if you don't look Thai!;D Always insist to go by the meter.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Placed in the middle of this thriving city is the Shanghai Mansion. Within that oasis staff will ensure the enjoyment of the guest is the priority. The sights and sounds of Bangkok are on the doorstep and the variety of food unbeatable and inexpensive. The perfect place to stay within the city.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Quiet haven in the insanity of Chinatown, Bangkok"
Room nicely decorated, very quiet (with the exception of construction noise during the day, which we were apprised of before our stay). Excellent housekeeping (they even folded my husband's underwear...poor housekeepers). Located in the heart of Chinatown, which is a blessing and a curse. It's near all kinds of things to do and see- hundreds of shops […] and restaurants on the same street, temple of the Golden Buddha within ten minute walk, Hualumpong train station and MRT station within 15 minute walk (although across some INSANE intersections, the key is to walk when the Thais go!). However- getting a cab to take you there is difficult. Only ONE taxi took us right away, others would simply say no or try to charge us some ridiculous amount. There are a few reasons for this- Chinatown is SO busy it actually makes other parts of Bangkok look like the traffic is flowing nicely; Chinatown's roads are difficult to navigate and are mostly one-way; and landmarks are very difficult to spot in Chinatown because everything is so densely packed. We walked by the hotel at least once when we first arrived, even though it has a large sign. For the price- great value, but I would warn anyone staying that the location, while convenient in some regards, is a nightmare for cabs home. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"amazing, beautiful rooms, friendly helpful staff"
fabulous, character rooms which feel luxurious. The free mini bar, silk dressing gowns, good quality toiletries, snacks around the communal seating areas, lovely surroundings, comfy bed, deep large bath tub all make for a perfect stay. The hotel and rooms were spotless and the staff were all very polite and helpful. The location wasn't perfect for the […] sites and tourist shopping but they run a free shuttle to the main attractions and it's easy to get about if that's what you want. If you have never been to Asia or seen any Chinatown, this is the place to be. For more accustomed people, I would recommend going closer to the riverside. The hotel was under maintenance but still quiet. One tiny negative aspect is the breakfast.... do not count on it but rather go explore the neighborhoodsGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great Asian themed hotel"
Lovely quaint hotel. Location is in Chinatown and not the best area to stay in.Genuine Expedia guest review
A very good hotel by all standards, be it the personnel, the food, the rooms, safety...even pricing of most of their services makes shanghai mansion probably one of the best hotels in Bangkok. "Good value for the money"
My girlfriend and I stayed 3 nights in a Ying Hua room. We were both very satisfied with the quality of the room, furnitures, quality, light, temperature, compliments, wifi speed, etc.. The room appeared exactly (or even better) than the pictures we saw on the internet. Location was OK. Just 5-10 minutes in taxi from Grand Palace. But expect the worst […] nightboorhood, since we saw lots of rats, cockroaches and very poor people. We did not like the dirty and smelly streets, but it was a good experience although. "Cheap, cheerful and a good location"
Stayed here for one night before starting a G-Adventures tour at the Bangkok Centre Hotel. It's much nicer than the BCH and only 5-10 minutes walk away. Staff were pleasant, room was clean and spacious and it worked out to be cheaper than a night at the BCH. All in all a good hotelGenuine Expedia guest review
We stayed in this hotel at the start of a 4 week trip across Asia, so chose luxury to start us off and it put our holiday off to a great start. We arrived at 6am and were collected from the airport, when arriving we were given tea and damp towel and we able to check in shortly after. The room was amazing, huge beds, shower room, seperate toilet and […] huge bathtub. The layout isn't the same as a traditional hotel, there are a few rooms on each floor and there is seating outside and a water feature on the ground floor. The mini bar was free and has a TV and DVD player available. The hotel has complimentary tuk tuks to the palace and the MBK mall which we used for the palace. Location is great for Chinatown, right in the middle of the streets and so close to the markets - it's great to come off a busy, hot street into the calmness of the hotel. To get to the palace you need to get the tuk tuk there and probably a taxi back, I'm not sure how long the walk would be, the restaurants around the area are unsurprisingly thai/chinese so if looking for a more western menu you need to go further out. All in all though the hotel is excellent, rooms are great, bed was so comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definately stay here again. "Great Boutique Hotel"
Stayed at Shanghai Mansion from July 5 to 9, 2013. The rooms were very clean, although bed was a bit hard, the service excellent and staff very friendly and helpful. "SHANGHAI MANSION, Thailand"
Shanghai Mansions is in great location in Chinatown near grand river Chao Phraya so we could use river boats for fast travel around to temples malls palaces and shops. Gorgeous decor in 1920's Shanghai theme with chinoiserie furnishings with a touch of Suzi Wong. Staff and service lovely. Great value for very affordable price , even our basic Mei Hua […] room, which was quite exotically furnished. Good air con adjustable in each room and non smoking. 4 storey ' genteel' boutique hotel offering beautiful relaxed environs after our adventures all day. Upstairs Cotton Club jazz swing combo and cocktails makes the whole experience like being in a vintage movie and you want to dress the part. No plastics chain hotel. No pool beauty salons and souvenir shops. Highly recommended. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful styling and excellent service"
Beautifully styled boutique hotel - bringing out the best in tasteful and interesting room decoration. If you like 'shabby chique' style decorating, you'll live this asian twist on the theme. Quirky touches like old Chinese style 4 poster beds, bird cage hanging in the bathroom, colourful lanterns, silk robes and slippers - you can even request to have […] a live fish in a bowl as a pet during your stay. "Unbelievable -It just doesn't get better than this"
The room was really amazing. Top quality fittings and finishes, modern, clean. The staff were incredibly professional, very friendly and helpful. The design of the hotel was so peaceful and a real haven from the chaotic streets of Chine Town. The breakfast was excellent - a nice mix between west and east. They offered a free tuk tuk ride to grand palace, […] MBK shopping mall and one other place I can’t remember which, was a nice touch. In terms of location, you really are in the middle of China Town with an excellent night market. Also it is close to all the major tourist destinations. The only issue with Shanghai was that the Taxi driver had no idea how to get there and the number printed on email I received was wrong. Be sure to have direction in Thai. At the moment the hotel is renovating its ground floor foyer and cafe. Once that is completed the experience should be even better. We found the staff helpful and knowledgeable. Stunning hotel - very old world Shanghai glamour just like website says. Room was incredible, attention to detail was superb, service so friendly & hospitable. Tranquil & quiet room, very peaceful sanctuary to come home to each night after the madness of downtown Bangkok. Astounded at the ridiculously cheap price I paid - was the most phenomenal value […] ever. Located right in the heart of Chinatown - so your experience will be most authentic & you will really feel like you are in traditional Bangkok, not some other international city staying in an internationally branded hotel room which could be anywhere in the world. Close to Little India, flower market & only a few stops on the SKYTRAIN or SUBWAY to shopping centres, stunning rooftop bars & the river for catching water taxi's. Food was delicious & staff were very accommodating at 3am when I had to leave for the airport, by arranging a taxi & sorting my checkout very speedily. Would highly recommend this hotel. Tired of skycrapers hotel, with a worldwide identical clinical decoration?Bangkok is full of them... What a shame! "Fun stay in Bangkok"
Great location in Bangkok as it is on the edge of Chinatown, not far from the subway, nor the river. The breakfast buffets were a good start to the day, music at night. "Nice in ways, I will stay somewhere else next time"
There are some great things about this hotel. The staff are friendly, the food is fantastic and the decor is interesting. It's smack bang in china town, so if you want the hustle, bustle of that, its a great place to stay. We had a great time eating out on the street corners and wandering around. However, we had an issue with the room and there were […] ongoing issues with the plumbing and noise from the drain which, due to the layout of the room (basically a studio-style room) meant that it was really loud in bed. When people showered in the rooms above (which happened all night) there were loud bubbling and gurgling noises. I finally got fed up one night and rang house keeping, which came (when no one was showering) and the language barrier made it hard to explain what was happening. In the end we put in ear plugs but it still woke me up. The bed was also very hard. The layout of the room also meant that there was quite a bit of ambient light at night times and this kept my partner awake. Overall I can understand why this hotel is rated highly, and it was good overall, and it was always nice to walk into the air conditioning, but those little things meant our sleep was disrupted and we didn't have the best time.
