"wonderful stay in Funchal; great location"
Wonderful accommodations. it was a bit disappointing that the hot tub is only available in the spa and that closed at 6pm! Restaurant was great. Complimentary breakfast was fabulous. Service all around was impeccable. Would stay there again in a heartbeat. Oh - and the rooms were really spacious!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Wonderful hotel, very comfortable"
Rooms and beds were incredibly comfortable, breakfast was extensive (everything from honey cakes to dried fruit to 2 different kinds of jam to pressed watermelon juice) and staff was typically very helpful. Outdoor swimming pool was particularly nice, and we accidentally joined a water aerobics class one night. Location: hotel is located a good 15 minute […] walk from the city center, which wasn't a problem for us because we like looking at maps and getting a little lost. If you're the kind of person who likes to roll out of bed and be in the hustle and bustle, perhaps this isn't for you. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Excellent small hotel in quiet area close enough to town for 70 year olds to walk.Clean, good room size, excellent dining room, although menu would be limited for someone on half board staying a week. No view of ocean might be drawback to some.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Quintinha de Sao Joao"
Lovely hotel with exceptional staff. Room was large, quiet and bright. Breakfasts were extensive with many options. Location was great for getting to know the old city of Funchal and access to the motorway was excellent. Wonderful value, would return.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Excellent and elegant hotel."
Great wee hotel with excellent staff. Elegant decor and architecture and very friendly bad accommodating staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
The pools were a lot smaller than expected and the facilities of the spa required a fee which you do expect to be included . Obviously not treatments . We only booked b&b but had a couple of meals in the restaurant which were good and the hotel had a very informal air and comfortable feeling . Rooms were good although we were booked for a garden view […] it was on the corner so if we looked out from the balcony we had a view of the restaurant and the road which was disappointing . "Would have been really quiet but for the traffic."
This hotel very nearly lives up to its reviews. The room was a standard twin - large with bathroom, sleeping area, lounge area and small balcony. It was quiet if the doors were shut but there was traffic noise when on the balcony. However, the hotel is in a capital city and a 15-20 minute walk from the centre so some traffic would be expected. We walked […] to and from the centre for dinner. The beds were very firm so hence the comfort rating - they were not to our taste. Sheets and towels were changed virtually every day and the inside of the hotel was very clean and well appointed. The outside pool let them down - it was far from clean - the sides of the pool needed scrubbing. Wouldn't say the breakfasts were fantastic - they were of similar quality to buffet breakfasts in other good quality hotels. We did not like their cooked offerings. However, the rest of the breakfast selection was very good. Room had all amenities:air conditioning and free safety deposit, flat screen TV with a few English channels, comfy settee but was slightly shabby. In the bathroom shower gel/shampoo, soap, bath salts and shower hat provided, and a hair dryer. Gowns also provided - useful for wearing to and from the pools. The shower was difficult to adjust and the bath very narrow. Games room and gym were good. Didn't use minibar or spa due to cost. Guest relations very good for local info and booking trips. Wouldn't recommend dining there - got nicer beef elsewhere, for example. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Small, friendly hotel"
My wife and I enjoyed our 11 night stay in this small, upmarket hotel. The staff were excellent, with nothing too much trouble. The facilities and decor were very good and our room with garden view balcony was comfortable and spacious. The restaurant served good quality food with excellent breakfasts. The hotel is located above Funchal town centre, […] with a 20 minutes walk down to the centre. Walking back uphill requires effort, but taxis are cheap and plentiful. There are no significant eating places close to the hotel. Overall a comfortable, quality, friendly hotel, but be prepared to do some walking to get to alternative eating places and sites. "A beautifully kept and run hotel"
The hotel itself is lovely, the staff could not be more helpful and there are lots of beautiful displays of flowers in the hotel. The breakfasts are very good with a great choice including cooked if you wanted it, we had dinner at the hotel twice which was good but a little expensive. The gardens are well kept, the pool area is quite pleasant and there […] is a well equipped gym. Funchal has become very built up with lots of hotels and apartments but there are loads of restaurants in the old town and plenty of taxis to get back up the hill to the hotel. If you break out from Funchal the scenery is spectacular with high cliffs, mountains and steep valleys. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"As a small city hotel should be"
We booked the hotel based on reviews alone. We had never been to Madeira before, so was a stab in the dark. Happily the hotel was everything that was stated in the reviews. Here are our + & -ves Positives 1) Really helpful multilingual staff 2) Quality of decor including rooms was high 3) Room cleaning etc was handled very well 4) Attached restaurant […] was not silly prices and food was more than acceptable 5) Breakfast offering was a wide range of buffet choices and your choice of cooked eggs etc. 6) Pleasant pool area 7) Only has 40 rooms, so never crowded Points to consider - Not really negatives 1) Up the hill from the main town and main tourist areas, some of the roads are steep.... (10-20min walk) 2) Standard room has bath only, so no separate shower 3) There is some noise from nearby when around the pool area 4) No coffee/tea making facilities in room, we asked for a kettle and they provided one without fuss All in all a good place to stay for a visit to Funchal Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A very good place to stay."
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Quintinha Sao Joha. We felt very welcome from the moment we arrived and found everyone to be very helpful. They wanted to make our stay relaxed and to help us to get maximum enjoyment through having good information about the area and about the whole island. They went out of their way to make it easy for us, by arranging […] transfers from and to the airport and also the two trips that we wanted to do to other parts of the island. Staff were always very pleasant and there was a total consistency of attitude by everyone - they were there for our benefit. We liked the size of the hotel and its individuality. It was not part of a large chain of hotels where service can be impersonal. It was just the right size to give excellence in everything. We had a lovely, large room which provided a sitting are and balcony . The hotel was well furnished with beautiful gardens. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A delightful hotel- very welcoming and comfortable"
The other reviews were correct. This is a delightful hotel. we received a very nice welcome and the room was very well appointed and very comfortable. We were blessed with good weather so sitting on the balcony or sitting in the delightful garden was very relaxing. The breakfasts had a great selection and very well presented and cooked. We had a few […] evening meals in the restaurant and they were also excellent and a very good selection of wines, although not all in stock. the pianists in the bar in the evenings were very good and made for a pleasant atmosphere, especially with half price happy hour being at any hour you wanted it! the walk back from town to the hotel was a challenge after a hard days walking in the mountains - so a car recommended and the hotel has good parking facilities for guests. Overall hard to fault the hotel. will definitely go again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not 5-star experience"
The hotel was ok but definately did not offer 5-star standard service. The wifi in our room never worked during our stay, and the cleaning staff did not refill our shampoo/soap when the original ones were finished. We booked our room with half board and free cancellation, and were unable to arrive early enough as scheduled on the first evening due to […] flight delay in lisbon for over 6 hours, so that we missed the dinner on that night. We asked if there was a possibility for a refund or a small compensation, and the answer was no for what-so-ever. Maybe they had the right to refuse our request for refund, but still, since they advertised their rooms as "with wifi", which never worked in our room, we just felt that they did not need to be so money orientated. But the restaurant was good, with friendly people working there. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Excellent in all respects. Peaceful, quiet, great staff all English speaking, lovely gardens and facilities. Next time we will spend more time in the hotel because it was one of the highlights of a lovely 7 day visit to Madeira.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel, great staff"
Lovely buildings and grounds. The staff, particularly in reception, were excellent. It's not on a bus route, but there are free transfer buses twice a day from hotel to marina area of Funchal. Hotel to marina is about 30 mins walk, with a further 15 mins walk to old town, cable car and local bus depot. Some of this is on steep cobbled roads. As we always […] walked into town, and back up to hotel, we came home with much stronger legs and lungs than we went out with. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Great atmosphere and staff, lovely clean room. Ideal for a peaceful stay in Funchal. Food not 5* but adequate. "Great boutique hotel in Madeira"
I have just returned from my 4-day stay at Quintinha Sao Joao. I can only recommend this hotel because of the cosy atmosphere. The members of staff are very friendly and nice, professional but not formal, customer - oriented and helpful. The hotel is very relaxing and peaceful: the ideal place if you need to detox from a very busy life in a city like […] London. Even if I was there by myself, I have never felt alone as I was feeling connections. Last but not least, some members of staff speak foreign languages very, very well. "A real find!"
We arrived at about 10.45 but were welcomed and given coffee on the terrace whilst our room was made ready. The room we were given was superb and easily exceeded our expectations - as did the remainder of our stay. Breakfast was an excellent buffet with waiter/ess served hot dishes which were cooked to order. Dinner was also good with an interesting […] menu of local and international dishes alongside Goan curries - which were delicious. The staff were, without exception excellent. They were friendly, attentive and keen to help you enjoy your stay. We were sorry to leave after our week in Funchal, but I'm sure we will return. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Luxury, friendly, comfortable and convenient"
Excellent hotel where all of the staff make you feel at home from the minute you arrive. A true home away from home. Rooms absolutely huge with super king bed, two seater sofa, tv, wardrobe, balcony, and fully equipped bathroom. Breakfast very good, eggs cooked to order. We did not use the outdoor pool. But the indoor pool is lovely and warm. Spa and […] games room on the lower ground floor. The hotel is a 15 min walk from the town centre, down hill into town, uphill when coming back - not for those who can't walk well but a taxi only costs 5/6 euros which we would highly recommend. Hotel is also very helpful with booking tours, giving directions, restaurant recommendations etc. A great hotel which by far beats the big hotels on the hotel strip west of a Funchal. We will definitely return (as do many guests who have stayed before !!) Room tip: 2nd floor 208-209-210. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Lovely hotel with very attentive staff"
The staff really make this hotel, nothing is too much trouble and they really want you to enjoy your stay. Even the girl who cleaned the room left me an extra box of tissues (unasked) as I had a cold. Not a particularly nice walk into Funchal and quite a steep walk back so we ended up paying for a lot of taxis. The hotel does do a run into town at 10am […] and back at 5.30 but never seemed to coincide with our plans. Massive room for a standard, ours was 115 which was lovely and quiet, under the swimming pool and with balcony but no one could see into room itself. Very pleasant hotel with lovely gardens. "Comfortable hotel, relaxed friendly atmosphere."
We were welcomed to the hotel by friendly reception staff who showed us to our room and informed us about the hotels facilities and the weeks optional activities. We asked the receptionist to book various restaurants and taxis, which they did gladly. They were very approachable and helpful. The room was well appointed with a small balcony from which […] we were able to see the sea and some of the hotels gardens. the room was large and well furnished, with a small settee, table and a small TV and DVD. It would have been nice to have a bigger screen. It would have been nice to have tea and coffee making facilities, although the cost of a coffee or tea in the hotel were not expensive, and there was room service. I would have liked to make my morning cup of coffee. All floors had sitting areas with beautiful flower arrangements and access to reading material. The indoor swimming pool, although not large was very clean with a ready supply of lovely green towels and rattan sun loungers. It was always lovely and warm with the facility of being able to open the windows for a bit of sun bathing. The restaurant staff were friendly and welcoming. The morning buffet breakfast was my favourite -a selection of cereals, cheeses, fresh or dried fruits, yogurts, rolls and bread, honey cake and best of all Champagne each day to start the day with a kick. You can also have eggs, bacon, sausage and mushrooms cooked in various ways. Do not miss Happy Hour with lovely cocktails at half price. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

What a lovely hotel. Really friendly, helpful staff who made you feel extremely welcome. Hotel atmosphere very relaxing with great facilities. Restaurant food was good quality with staff providing high level of service. Very quiet with nice views of surrounding hills. Walk to main town about 15 minutes. "Lovely hotel with beautiful gardens"
We chose Quitinha Sao Joao after reading a review about it in the Sunday Times. When we looked on Expedia we liked the reviews about it. We are delighted about our choice. It was a really lovely small hotel set in beautiful gardens with a large variety of plants. The room was simple but very comfortable. It was like staying in someone's country house. […] We liked the separate sitting area. It was very clean. The entire staff were excellent, very professional and friendly. The wonderful Rosie was the icing on the cake. This was our first visit to Madeira and would go again. It is very beautiful with friendly people that welcome British visitors. It offers a varied scenery and climate. "Mother in law loved it ... and so did I"
Great hotel, with very friendly staff. Small nature of the hotel (40 rooms) means there is a family atmosphere and you get to know the staff and other guests. Beautiful gardens, although they are smaller than they appear from the photos. The hotel is about 1.3kms from the centre of town, downhill there but uphill back. Taxis are plentiful and good […] value for the trip back up the hill. Happy hour is a nice touch, and a good way to meet other guests. It is a very relaxed atmosphere. Do not expect 4am drinking games or discos. Bed is very firm, you can ask for a topper if you prefer a softer bed. Those rooms facing the town can get some road noise (especially 8-9am and 4-6pm). Positives: - Great gardens - Super staff (with one exception) - Nice outdoor pool and bar area - Close enough to the centre, but away from the horrid hotel strip - Breakfast - good quality and variety (ask for anything even if not on the menu ie omlette) To improve: - Free wifi in rooms should be standard (there is free wifi in the public areas) - Evening meals, easier and better value to go into town. "Great hotel for relaxing"
This was our third trip to this superb modern hotel which feels like an old country house. The staff are excellent and give you lots of attention, the gardens are lovely and afternoon tea and cake around the pool is a real treat. Prices for extras are very reasonable, 1.50 euro for tea, 3 for cake and 4 for brandy. It is a totally relaxing place to […] stay. Breakfast is very good and you get fresh fruit in your room every day. The décor is 100% everywhere and the place is spotless. The thing you need to know is that its about a mile from the town centre and the walk is a little vertically challenging. We don't mind as its good exercise but you can always get a cab back up which is about 5 euro. This is one of the best places we have stayed in. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
There is really not a bad word to say about Quintinha Sao Joao. The staff are tremendous - friendly, personable, helpful and genuinely interested in talking to you. Rooms are lovely, spacious, clean and the gardens and bar area are beautiful. We also really enjoyed the indoor pool, which is up on the second floor. Light & airy, it felt slightly nicer […] than sitting by the outdoor pool which was very quiet. Meals are good - both breakfast (lots of choices including omelettes; salmon & scrambled eggs; fresh juice; toast; cakes; cheese & ham; cereal etc) and evening (nice selection of dishes from Goa plus lots of local delicacies too). It's only a short walk into the town (10-15 mins depending on how fast you walk) or 6 euros in a taxi. A fabulous smallish hotel (43 rooms) with the facilities of a resort - 2 heated pools, 1 indoors. Friendly, efficient staff, lovely antique furniture in public areas. "Superb little gem of a hotel"
Quintihna Sao Joao is a great hotel to choose as your home for your stay in Madeira. The hotel has everything you'd expect from a 5 star, but in an informal setting that allows you to relax and feel at home. By far the best thing about this hotel is the staff - without exception they were welcoming, friendly and gave excellent service, without it ever […] feeling intrusive. The hotel is really well located in Funchal - it's about 10 minutes walk down to the harbour (where the main centre starts), coming back its about 20 minutes as its steeply uphill - but the whole of Funchal is on hills! There are cheap taxis everywhere if you want to avoid the climb. We were very glad we stayed here rather than in the rather soulless hotel zone further out. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
