Well located, on a section of beach that has the best snorkeling on the island with tons of fish. We chose Edgewater because it was the largest hotel, thus good facilities. We rented a car and went all over the island and found none better than our choice. Mom with 2 adult sons, we needed space so we reserved a villa. 3 separate bedrooms and 2 baths, washer and complete kitchen, stove and refrig. It was clean and neat, towel service daily. Room […] was not more than 1/3 block from beach. Generous continental breakfast included. The hotel pool was located in front of the restaurant and there was a cabana that provided free snorkeling equipment. I did not use fins, just water shoes and mask, walked directly out into the water a short distance and ducked down in 4' of water and saw 15 varieties of colorful tropical fish. Best snorkeling ever! The whales were migrating just off the reef and we watched them frolicking daily. One son even got a great photo of a whale jumping. We did 2 boats, one submarine (a boat where you could climb down a ladder and view underwater fish, the other a whale watching ($30 each) I cannot recommend this trip more highly. I am a world traveller and have been in 36 countries and all US states but Alaska. Rorotonga made me think how it must have been in Hawaii in the 40's. Not much tourism, mostly New Zealanders on holiday. Polynesian natives were friendly and accomodating. Makes me think THIS MAKES ME THINK HOW HAWAII MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE 40'S Evening meals may seem expensive, remember NZD vs USD is 75% Tax and tip included. Way to go, Expedia . Read more

The view from the lagoon view room was great and the beachside restaurant and pool area was a pleasant area to relax and socialise in. Snorkling in the lagoon was a highlight, with plenty of tropical fish to see, however several times we had to wait for snorkling equipment to be returned and some equipment was not in good condition. The staff were pleasant, however service was slow, and we experienced a lengthy delay in getting issues or requests dealt with on several occassions. The room was comfortable and spacious but not as clean as we expected for the cost of the room. It was only cleaned once during a five night stay; with only towels changed and bins emptied on the other days. The reason given was that housekeeping services were limited over the New Year holiday period. Overall, the beachfront location, great air conditioner in the room, daily activities avilable and friendly staff made the stay enjoyable. It is a good choice for those with children or a group of friends, however for couples wanting a peaceful environment and to relax in the pool that is not full of noisy kids, another hotel may suit better. One arrived late at night.The distance from airport to hotel was short but expensive.Check in quick.in day light we found we were in the old part of the hotel which had no relationship to pictures shown in all publicity.We were not offered opportunity to book in new section. the rooms were adequate.We were in the 200 block which is next to restaurant […] and over looked pool.Ideal until pub crawl night.Thankfully reception agreed to us shifting the next day.We suspect they are used to dealing with this request.If you want peace particularly at night and you do not need a lesson in NZ swear words (which are few and start high in the alphabet) it is best to avoid this block. From reading the reviews I had mixed emotions about staying at the Edgewater. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and shown to our room. The room itself is pretty tired but all in all neat and tidy. Everything we needed except I had to ask reception for a hair dryer (not a big deal). The only bad thing would be that the aircon sounds like a train […] when you sleep and of course being as hot as it was it was not an option to switch it off. The room was cleaned everyday with fresh towels and sheets - our neighbours said the beds were hard but I guess I'm not too fussy and found them comfy. There were less kids around than what I originally expected and the resort was pretty quiet (which is a good thing#. Nice pool, and stunning coral reefs if you like snorkelling. We were in the water most of the time. The food is average but beware of the cost of drinks #alcohol or not#. I would recommend grocery shopping for snacks throughout the day... Beware of the one lady where you book activities/scooters - she has a bit of an attitude! So I waited for another girl working there to start her shift and she was lovely. If you can, get your scooter licence test done at the resort #much easier than the one in town#. Two things are a must to do - 1. Party bus #great fun with all sorts of different people# 2. We enjoyed our holiday in Raratonga but would not stay at the Edgewater Hotel again as we found it quite run down and overdue for a complete refurbish. We felt that it was over priced and the meals were very average.

We stayed in a garden room which was lovely, however there were outddated dishes and kettle and no sink to wash the dishes in, we had to use the bathroom vanity sink to rinse our dishes which didn't seem right, the bar fridge and decor were also a little outdated. However the sun and snorkelling […] were great and the staff were very pleasant and helpful most of the time, food is expensive but standard for if you were to eat out at a restaurant, the continental breakfast was lovely with fresh juicy fruit every day. We had family and friends in garden rooms, breachfront rooms and a villa. The villas were the most well equipped and would be a better option if you were going with family and wanted to share a room and the cost as they come with 3 bedrooms and cooking facilities etc.... If you want the a resort experience this is the place fror it. The towels were changed daily but I don't think the floors or bathroom were cleaned. The main complaint was the double/queen bed. It was so hard whoever slept in it woke up with aches and pains. That's if they got any sleep at all. Also as there are very late and an early flight, you may […] be disturbed by people arriving/leaving late or early. The section of the lagoon isn't good for swimming but snorkelling. Take or buy reef shoes. To swim you need to go to one of the other beaches which you can do by bus, bike, care or scooter. It's near quite a few other good restaurants within walking distance. Always a good idea to book at some of these other restaurants.The Island Night was a lot of fun. Don't miss out on the happy hours with $10 cocktails between 5-6. Our stay was very good, we did everything we wanted and had a very relaxing time. The hotel management seems to have put a lot of effort into making sure everyone's holiday is the best it could be with the daily activities and news sheet. Booked a Lagoon view room and happy with room location (though it looked like we were in one of the older blocks as it seemed other blocks had been modernised - but the room was fine if a little past its best - though perhaps that was why Expedia was able to offer such a great rate for the stay?). Saw whales passing most days from our room balcony (but […] this depends on the time of year you visit). As others have mentioned, the beach is rocky, especially under the water, but its protected by a reef that stops the breakers reaching the shore. To get the best out of it you need to get the free snorkel and reef shoes/flippers supplied and go looking for the colourful fish that swim around the rocks in the lagoon. The water is not deep so provided you watch out for the rocks and coral its easy enough even if, like me, you are not a confident snorkeler. The island buses come right to the hotel reception so its very easy to get around the island and to the main town (but noone should come to Rarotonga for the shopping opportunities - perhaps black pearls excepted). The onsite restaurants are fine and there are other options within walking distance of the hotel. The pool is small and its probably fair to say that it is not the prettiest of hotels, but provided you have done your research and understand what Rarotonga has to offer (compared with, say, the Caribbean) then the Edgewater is a good option provided you are not looking for "luxury accommodation". Arrived a day early (our mistake), in the busy season but not a problem for these guys. After about 20 mins they found another, more modest, room and then the next day, actually upgraded us to a better room than the one we originally booked. While we were walking on the back road in the rain (slightly lost...), the marketing manager, recognizing the […] hotel umbrellas, stopped and went out of his way to give us a ride into town. The staff were never less than open, very friendly and totally accommodating. It was really heart-warming. The place is clean and tidy and although some of the older blocks are looking a bit tired, we saw nothing significantly wrong. It is apparently the biggest hotel on the island and does cater to families so if you want total peace and privacy, you might want to look elsewhere. We stayed here for ten days in July and it was fantastic! Hotel and facilities were everything we needed. Only disappointment was our cooking facility in our room turned out to be a microwave only, but I think we were just unlucky with the room we got as others had small oven with hot plate on top. The resort was at full capacity because of school holidays […] but this never bothered us at all because the resort is so spread out. Really handy having a scooter hire right there as well as a place to book activities. Snorkeling was excellent straight out from the resort so we took advantage of the resorts free snorkel hire. I took a daughter and a 10-year-old grandson for a week's holiday and we all just loved it. We were lucky to be upgraded to a beachfront room and it was fantastic to be able to look out onto golden sand and the beautiful lagoon all day. The main room was spacious and also the bathroom, which had a shower plus a spa bath. Housekeeping was impeccable. […] Beds could do with an upgrade maybe but we slept well with the sound of the surf anyway. So convenient to have Mal's Brasserie so close and the food was great and well-priced. Loved the free continental breakfasts to start the day. Sorry to miss Island Night but we had pre-booked elsewhere. Next time! My grandson just loved the snorkelling and the pool, also the wonderful Kids Club, where he made some great pals and they had lots of fun together.
