Oaks Lagoons - Port Douglas

We were in town to visit for the eclipse. When I booked the reservation I completely forgot that the hotel was more of an extended stay type. The rooms are only services once a week and there aren't any amenities like room service, or even ice machines. Since we were outside of Port Douglas our only food options were next door at the Ramada (expensive), […] down the street (a great little cafe and liquor store) or taking the shuttle into Port Douglas. If you take he shuttle, I highly recommend buying a multi trip pass when you first get on. The comfort of the hotel was good and the private entry to the pool was great. Although private is a little misguided. You can see everyone's patio area except your neighbors on either side. The staff at the desk were always very helpful and even went out of their way to make us comfortable since my travel companion had an injury. The hotel is also a short walk to 4 mile beach. The swim up back patio really made this place. Super relaxing and great location if you have a car or bike to ride around the area. I only wish they were more liberal with towels since there is pool and you likely want to shower after a swim, so there is a lot of drying off going on. Highly recommended.

Overall a good hotel, but I didn't realize it was self-catering, meaning that they don't service the room at all unless you're there for more than a week. We really enjoyed our stay at Oaks. Staff were very helpful, granting us an early checkin and late checkout at no extra cost. They were also helpful in recommending places to go in and around pd. The spa on our balcony was bigger than expected, and a great little bonus and the perfect way to end a long day of trekking through the rainforest or swimming on the reef. The pools at Oaks were great too. We swam in them 4 out of 5 days and only had to share with other guests once. Several smaller pools was definitely better, rather than one large pool as some resorts have. The pools also have spa jets, which a lot of guests seemed to not know about. The only complaint I would have is the the cutlery and crockery provided was not evenly spread. In a room that sleeps 2, you would expect 2 spoons, 2 forks, 2 plates etc, however we had more than 2 of some and only one of others. I'm sure had we alerted the staff at reception they would have rectified this, but we were having too much fun to bother. There were a couple of maintenance issues that we reported when we checked out, but they didn't hinder our stay in the slightest. Overall, Oaks is one of very few value for money spots to stay in pd. Our hotel accommodation was very spacious, so big you could live there. It was spotlessly clean. It would have been nice to have internet in the room. Comfortable room in Port Douglas area. Easy to get around with a car. I had a swim out room which was nice, but not necessarily any better than just going to the pool, unless maybe you are a big pool person. The only problem was that some units do not have a real kitchen and I ended up with one of those. The sink was maybe 3 inches wide by 8inches long […] making causing me to give myself an impromptu shower every time I washed a plate if I was not extremely careful and angled the plate at the right degree to get enough water on it to rinse it off but not enough to spray myself. Some rooms apparently have larger kitchen facilities. There is a "kitchen area" by the pool, but it does not have any burners only a flat grill like stove top where you can cook meats, etc. There is also a microwave and a toaster, so eggs and steak are possible, oatmeal and pasta are not. If you have the small kitchen it will limit you. The hotel is very nice and all the staff are pleasant and friendly. Bed was comfortable and there was plenty of space. Read more

My husband and I were impressed with the common areas of the Oaks Lagoon but our apartment was a definate let down. Very tired looking furniture, grubby furnishings and a general state of uncleanliness, general wear and tear you can forgive but this was just grubby, mould in the shower, coffee spills on the bedroom wall and a covering of dust on the […] bedhead. I did complain and was offered another apartment but chose to stay where we were and bought some cleaning products and got to work. Whole apartment needs refurbishing. There is nothing around the hotel. They don't even have a coffee shop or a place for breakfast. The hotel next door, (Ramada) has a shuttle to town wich can be used by Oak lagoons guests. They don't even clean the rooms daily, so you used your towels over and over, and had to pay 3 Australian dollars a day each, to hire a beach towel for the pool. Room not cleaned properly and when mentioned to staff the didn't seem to care. Outdoor area near pool covered in leaves which weren't cleaned up despite the rest of the areas being blower vac. A two bedroom apartment in fact was two separate apartments, which would not have been suitable for small children. There were not two sets of crockery and cutlery […] in the room. Stayed 2 nights at this hotel on a room only basis. Good value. Excellent room and very clean and well maintained. Hotel approx 4km out of town but a shuttle bus operates from the Ramada next door at a small cost. The staff were very helpful and gave us information on where we could eat etc.

We decided to give Oaks Lagoon a try because our usual resort we stay at was fully booked. We got a 1 bedroom deluxe swim out, the room is not bad could do with a clean in the way of washing the curtains and couch pillows. My wife, baby girl and I stayed at this hotel in Sept 2011. We booked a 1 bedroom swim out apartment. Pluses were the room is fully equipped with fridge, dishwasher, cooktop, plates and utensils, 3 minute walk to beach, pools kept in immaculate condition. Negatives were the room was a little tired and not 100% clean (we had ants roaming our bench top, […] stained throw pillows and blocked vanity drain), a little far from town (although not an issue if you have a hire car), and no on site room service, bar or restaurant. But if your looking for a self contained apartment at a decent price, with a swim out pool (perfect for when you want to lounge poolside whilst the bub is asleep), then it’s hard to beat. Top tip – ask for a sunny side room when booking. The architects obviously didn’t take into account sun rise and sun set when designing this place. Read more

After reading a few reviews when booking I was a little hesitant now having stayed for nine nights in a swimout one bedroom on the sunny side I couldn't fault the place. The building it self was fresh and clean, the staff on arrival couldn't have been nicer and were very pleasant throughout our stay. We would walk every day along the four mile beach which took about 40 minutes to walk into town, very pleasant. Shuttle buses ran every half hour from the resort next door another option. The Beach Shack which is within walking distance was a good place to have an evening drink or meal, very relaxed. There was a deli, fish and chip shop and video shop one block away so you could pick up the papers at the deli or milk etc very handy. When I booked Oaks Lagoons at Port Douglas, I was looking for a really relaxing holiday, in apartment accommodation in a resort environment out of the centre of town. And that was exactly what I got. The resort grounds, pools and facilities were clean and well maintained. Oaks Lagoons is a 5 minute walk from 4 Mile Beach and about 3 kms from the centre of Port Douglas so I would often walk into town either along the beach or on a meandering footpath off the main road. You can also hire a bike from reception if you want to and cycle around Port Douglas. The girls at reception were extremely helpful, booking tours and massages for me, as well as dealing with my requests promptly and without any fuss. We arrived at our hotel around 11.00am and was greeted warmly by the receptionist. After giving us the keys, we made our way to our room. We had booked a two bedroom swim out room for our family of 4. The rooms were large and spacious - two units in one. The kitchen a good size and the main bedroom was joined by a spacious study which made it seem all […] the bigger. The room was clean and the kitchen was well fitted out. The air conditioning units were put to good use as the temperatures were HOT outside. Air con units strategically placed in the important parts of the room eg bedroom, living. The hotel is situated a little further out from town, but if you have a car, its not a problem. The beach is around 100 metres walk to the end of the street. The gardens were immaculate. Staff were friendly and able to give tips of places to go for dinner etc. The concept of the swim out pool was well utilised and enjoyed. There are no restaurants within the hotel, but a good bbq area can be enjoyed and there are plenty of other places to eat in town. Overall we found our stay at Oaks Lagoons an extremely enjoyable family holiday adventure and recommend to others. Read more

Oaks Lagoons is a modern complex with 6 lagoon style pools - this is great as the pools are never over crowded. Staff were lovely - very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay at Oaks Lagoons, the only thing we would like to note is that it is a few kilometers from the actual town and probably not a comfortable walk in the heat.
