"Was once a first class hotel but not today..."
We were at the hotel for a business meeting for 4 nights. The facilities are large and beautiful but the maintenance and housekeeping in the rooms was not at the same level. Our room was large but the layout was strange (closet in the bathroom). There were maintenance issues which we immediately noticed including a painted over plastic toilet seat (what […] was someone thinking) and air vents full of dust. There were also housekeeping issues such as large stains on the towels and no washcloths. The WiFi was so bad it was unusable (no wonder it was free). The carpet was wet and needed to be vacuumed. To their credit the hotel staff worked to remedy the situation by changing the toilet seat and replacing the towels but the WiFi never got fixed even after speaking with technical support. There also appeared to be an issue with the cleaning of the hallways where we frequently found trash and cigarette butts. We found hotel staff just walking by these items without thinking about cleaning them up. It appears that housekeeping is a problem throughout. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful setting, nice facilities, awesome staff"
This was the perfect place for a long weekend luxury get away. The setting, buildings, landscaping, and pool / outdoor areas are all arranged and kept up with care and an eye for flair without being overly "trendy" or "hip". It is not the W but it is not your grand-dad's Waldorf Astoria either. The staff are all very helpful, outgoing, sweet and knowledgeable. […] The island beach is fun and well kept, although do not expect roaring surf - it is in a protected area and is not same as say a Florida or California beach. Do not fool yourself into thinking it will be a 'budget' vacation just cuz you book at a savings on Expedia - drinks and food are not cheap (although everything in the convenience store / snack bar off the lobby are very reasonably priced) and you must pay a daily 'resort fee', and it's only fair to be generous with the tips for the staff - just accept that and forget about it and you'll be fine. This is not the place to be cheap (I heard some hick in cargo shorts and Reeboks at the poolside complaining about having to tip everyone) or dress cheap or act cheap - this is a nice resort and you need to be in that mode. The resort is well situated on a bluff overlooking the ocean. The rooms and service were excellent. If also features serveral restaurants that offer a variety of cuisine and price options. TOO SHORT OF A STAY! REALLY LOVED OUR WEEKEND AT EL CONQUISTADOR!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I would and have recommended this hotel. I was intially concerned about the garden view room that I had booked, but it turned out to be absolutely beautiful and peaceful. The grounds are breathtaking and exceptionally well maintained. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I especially loved the private island. The resort provides the guests with […] a nice catamaran ride to and from the hotel and private beach on the island every 1/2 hour throughout the day. The beach on the island was very nice and there was plenty to do.. or simply do nothing and relax. They have a nice little water park that give the kids something to do. That was a nice touch. The only complaint I have would be the price of food. VERY expensive (this is common to resorts). 2 small, thin crust, not so good pizza and a beer came out to $50 plus tip. The food was so/so at the quick pool side restauraunts. There are higher end restauraunts throughout the resort that looked very delicious, but we did not eat at any of them. I f I were one to revist the same resort twice, I would definately return. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Vacation at the "El Conquistador""
The entire week was a disappointment. Over priced hotel rooms in need of upgrades, grounds in disrepair, walls, walkways cracking. Over priced restaurants where the food was mediocre at best. Over priced drinks. Daily pricing for self parking which was inconvenient to get to and from. The room was comfortable, with the exception of the bathrooms/showers […] which are in serious need of repair. Rusted metal fixtures, pitted ceramis tubs, grout in need of repair. Balcony outside room in poor condition, paint flaking off rails, floors full of bird droppings. Palomino Island in need of an overall clean up, garbage and bottles by seating areas every day. Unfortunately the resort is starting to show it's age. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice resort stay for first time to Puerto Rico"
I was looking for an easy, relaxing vacation to Puerto Rico. The El Conquistador fit the bill perfectly. You barely have to think to find things to do - several different pools (including a water park), free ferry rides to the hotel's private island, multiple restaurants and a great concierge. The only catch is that all that convenience is costly. The […] high-end restaurants on site are great, but pretty expensive (over $100 for dinner for two people, not including drinks). The other restaurants are pretty mediocre - everything is fried and/or bland. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The resort has awesome views of the sea and nearby islands. We had a great time on Polamino island. The employees were extremely friendly and helpful. Expect to be nickel and dimed as is typical in a resort like this. Good dining options in the resort but not many good options out unless you are adventurous. Disappointed with the room maintenance. The […] phone did not work, and the sink leaked. More attention placed on the outside and lobby than on the rooms. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
My family (4 adults and 3 children) and I spent Thanksgiving weekend at The El Conquistador hotel and was very disappointed. We had Thanksgiving dinner at the hotel and what we were served was barely edible, thank goodness the portions we SMALL (but expensive). Every other restaurant we ate in always over charged us. Once by the pier it was only an […] extra beer. Than at the steak restaurant children ate free before 6 pm, we confirmed this with the waitress, but upon receiving the check the children were still charged (sorry oversite). The last time it was my wife and me at the Italian restaurant and we just has two simple meals. But, when the check came there was additional salads and bottled water on the check. I can understand it happening once by mistake, but when it happened at all the restaurants it does not sit well with me. It is almost as if the hotel staff was told to try and sneak charges past the guests. We as a family have decided that it was happen to often to be a coincidence and will not be vacationing at The El Conquistador ever again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Palomino Island was the only good feature"
I definitely feel like I paid too much for what I got. The outside of the resort is beautiful but then when you get to your room your smile turns into being confused. The shower was nasty. There was black grime all over. Then the bed had blankets and pillows that smelled like someone had wrapped up their sweaty body in it and then it was just left for […] the next person. When we called about it, it took 30 minutes to get new blankets and there was no apology. There were also mosquitos all over and I have bites on my arms and legs. The food was okay and WAY OVERPRICED! The only thing good about this place was being able to escape it and go to Palomino Island which was beautiful. I would never stay here again. Glad we only stayed for a couple of days. Oh and this hotel is an hour away from the airport! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Our stay at El Con Resort"
There was too much walking involved. A handicapped person would have a difficult time getting around. The food at the pool was over priced and arrived cold. Drinks were fine but high price. "HIDDEN FEES! 80.00$/day "tax and resort charge"."
The hotel is beautiful and safe. I was charged 80.00$/day US dollars for "Tax and resort charge" on top of my 300.00/ day for my most basic room. The water park is also not included, although it doesn't clearly say that on the website. 33.00/ day for me and my two children for 4 hrs. More for an 8 hr. pass. The food is very expensive and not very good. […] I paid 70.00 for 3 cheeseburgers and 3 cokes w/ tip. They have it set up so you have to sit down to eat most of the time, so you have to waste money tipping. After a few days, I found a coffee shop that did take out which was more reasonable..7.00$ for grilled cheese but at least we didn't have to waste money tipping. The "water park" is small, one "body" slide, one slide for tubes and a small lazy river. I wouldn't go back. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Should get what you pay for"
I had stayed at the Elconquistador before and loved it. My first disappointment was that even though I had a confirmation for a ocean view with 2 queen beds. They said they didn't have anymore available. They gave us an obstructed ocean view room closer to the main part of the resort with a king bed and a pull out sofa for my teeneage granddaughter. […] It was noisy. Especially at night. We were overlooking the pool and there was a party at the pool everynight. In general the place shows it's age but the staff was wonderful and always helpful. The concierge was not very helpful. She arranged for taxi for us for a 3am pick up. She never said anything about arranging for prepayment with a credit card which is what I planned. I had to write a check for the driver. Very embarrassing and avoidable. He said the concierge should have gone over payment options with me. "Highly disappointed - You get what you Pay For !"
From the beginning at check in they were hasty and unclear about details of the $100 resort credit, delegated me back to hotels.com Customer Service. It turned out they are supposed to accept the $100 resort promotion coupon. Everyday we were charge wrong for something, especially at the onsite vendors. SO PLEASE keep all receipts and calulate your […] own total. Of all the mistakes we caught and brought to their attention, no one in a customer service sense has the courtesy to apologize. I swear, double charging for the shuttle service and dinners. Also, facility is fine but the beach is a 25 minute ferry away. Great for kids and affordable but the food is terrible or overproced if it is half decent tasting. Never return for us. Best to pay the $400 a night room for real honest service. "Nice hotel with a perfect view"
Loved this hotel and it's location; the staff was friendly and helpful. I recommend booking any excursion trips you would like to do before you arrive at the hotel since many things I had wanted to do were booked solid. I was able to book a kayak trip to the bioluminescent lagoon, but we were the final spots and all trips to the El Yunque rainforest […] were booked as well as snorkeling trips and trips to Culebra. I also found the hotel could be a little pricey so be prepared to pay 9-10 dollars for drinks and double for food. My experience with the food is don't waste money on the expensive dining that require reservations, the Ballhoo bar right next to the Marina had the best food and drinks and so did the Cafe Bella Vista up the stairs from the main pool; for Spanish food go to Cafe Caribe. Also to save money on alcohol, go to the La Marina Cafe and buy bottles of alcohol and mixers, they had the cheapest prices for alcohol and we saved money by mixing our own drinks in water and soda bottles. Also, the Coqui water park is $20 per person a day but entry from 4pm until they close around 5 or 6pm is $5; look out for the iguanas by the lazy river, they do go in the water since it is built in a natural iguana habitat. "Good location, food was mediocre and overpriced"
I had a good time. Pool, private island were very nice. Beach was rocky, snorkeling trip was ok but not the best I've ever been on. If you don't get an all inclusive package, expect to pay minimum of $30 for every meal, and have it be not that good unless you pay $50. They have a market but it too is ridiculous (hello $26 for a 6 pack of coors light). For […] me it was a good trip because I like having a decent sized outdoor lap pool. For most other, unless there's an affordable all inclusive package I'd go somewhere else and save a few hundred getting better food somewhere else. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The hotel/resort has a great golf course, the best in P.R., fitness centers, spa, swimming pools, an island beach reached by the hotel's ferry and views that are world class. "Beautiful and relaxing"
Overall my husband and I had a very good experience at the hotel. Every one of the staff we dealt with was excellent - very courteous and helpful. The property is beautiful and wonderfully landscaped. We stayed in an ocean view room that was nice but I think could use a few changes. The oddest thing for me is that they have the coffee machine, ice bucket […] and glasses set up on a table in the bathroom, pretty much right next to the toilet. I find this very off-putting to say the least. The room itself was decent but nothing spectacular. As far as meal options go, we ate at several of the restaurants. The smaller bar restaurants are just ok. They could use a little more variety from place to place and PLEASE get fresh buns for your sandwiches and burgers - without exception they were dry. Chop House had excellent food overall but the meal was rather rushed. Stingray, the seafood restaurant was good also but I made the mistake of ordering lamb chops which were horrible. I know - why get lamb chops at a seafood place, but I asked the waiter what was a better choice between the salmon or the lamb and he said definitely the lamb. Apparently they were trying to get rid of them. The Italian restaurant and the Asian/Chinese were alright. Should be better for what they charge. Palomino Island is beautiful and we enjoyed the ferry ride over. I also think the hotel should have some nightly entertainment for adults. Because of the staff, beach, and weather, we would most likely go back. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Family friendly hotel in Puerto Rico"
We went to the El Conquistador hotel in Puerto Rico last week and loved it. The hotel was amazing. It is perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with gorgeous views. They have many pools, a water park and a private island for the guests to enjoy. The private island has snorkeling, wave runners and kayaks available for rent. The hotel caters […] to families with kids games by the pool, events each night in the lobby (magician, parrots that the kids can hold, etc.), arcades and a great scavenger hunt throughout the resort. "Read this before you go - facts vs. opinion"
Just like the Waldorf in NYC, this place is grand but old and prices are closer to NYC than they are to anywhere else in Caribbean. We have been traveling and diving yearly in Caribbean for 15 years and would never go back here. Facts: 1. Breakfast buffet for one person = $25 or closer to $32 including taxes and tips. 2. A bottle of wine in their onsite […] store costs $25 vs. $7.99 in town at Walmart or grocery store 3. Diving visibility was so low we abandoned our dive - and they said it was a nice day. Visibility was ~20 feet at most. We have NEVER abandoned a dive before in 15 years of diving every winter. First thing divemaster said when we got out was "sorry we can't give you a refund." 4. Construction started a 8:00 AM in room next door - jackhammer might as well have been in our room. 5. 30-year old toilet (of the type you would see in airport) stuck on day 3 and flooded entire room. 6. Kids can only use game room during day if it is raining - otherwise it is off limits. 7. If kids want to play a game of air hockey after 6:00 PM when game room opens it is $5.00 if you can get a table. 8. No rolloff beds or mattresses allowed per fire code. Our 15 year old son had to sleep on floor (we also have a 13 year old daughter who took the other bed) 9. In December it rains almost every day on east side. Was also very windy. 10. "The Conqueror at 20."
Other reviews on Expedia are generally accurate. Yes, the place is showing its age. It's a bit tired, especially the rooms (We stayed in the Las Brisas wing). Expectations should be tempered, notwithstanding the Waldorf Astoria branding and associated pricing (We got in on a last minute getaway promotional rate, with a $150 resort credit; if we had […] paid full rate, I might not have been as forgiving). As others have stated, the food/drink is so-so and overpriced, even by resort standards. Also, like many resorts, they hit you for basically everything. The Chop (steakhouse) was on par with a Morton's, Capital Grille or similar chains on the mainland and the service (at two different meals) was good. By comparison, The Stingray Cafe was awful (by far the most disappointing meal we had, especially given the price). The seafood chowder had the taste and texture of Campbell's vegetable soup with chunks of canned tuna thrown in (I wish I was exagerrating). Halibut was overcooked. Service OK, but not good. Avoid the breakfast buffet (not worth the $25 price of admission). On the positive side, the common areas (bar/pool/grounds) are generally clean (although fresh paint is in order in a few places) and there are some cool amenities -- Palamino Island, a water park for the kids, spa and golf course. Oh, yes, they have a Starbucks (Thank God for Starbucks). All-in-all, we had a good time and might return for another visit if the price is right Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice location, mediocre hotel"
This hotel is in need for a major facelift. Another issue is parking. They charge $16/day to park your car which I think should be free for a resort of this size. You have to validate your parking ticket every time you want to leave the hotel, and they do not even bother telling you that you have only 15 minutes to get out. Here is what happened to […] me. I validated my ticket and was about to walk to the car with my wife and two kids when my younger kid wanted to go to the bathroom. He spent about 7-8 minutes there, so by the time we got to the car the ticket was already expired and gate did not open with 3-4 other cars behind blocking my way back. So, I had to step out of the car, ask other people to back up, park the car again, walk all the way to the reception, wait in line, validate the ticket, walk back and then be able to leave the property. Also, be ready for resort charges. They are not included in the Expedia package ($25/day or so). Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
