"Great, but past its peak."
This is still a great hotel, but past its peak. A lot of the hotel stores are now closed and the casino is gone. The room was very comfortable, and had a very large bathroom, but the bathroom door was the kind that doesn't lock. The hotel is huge and you have to take a tram to get to the Las Olas and Marina rooms. On the last day, one of the cars broke […] and we had to take the stairs all the way down (with our bags) to take the express car back up. There is no other way to get to the lobby. The hotel has no beach so they take you by ferry to Palomino island, where they have a nice private beach. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not well managed and rather disappointing."
We were not able to check in way past our 4pm check in time. Rooms were not at the conditions at those prices. There were leaks on the ceilings. The furniture is old. There were sewage smells on the grounds sometimes. After charging all the resort fees they still want to charge you $5 dollars for a 1 minute domestic call. And they expect you to read […] all the small prints around the room to know all these rules as there will not be any warnings for such charges. The worst of all is that the management rather has a very unhappy client than forgive the $10 such phone charges even though you have spent $2500 at that place. I guess they do not care as you do not have a lot of choices in that area. Avoid it if you can! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Bioluminescent Bay near by"
We picked the El Conquistador because we wanted to be in the NE of PR to do the bioluminescent bay tour easily and be closer to the airport... we had spent two nights in the NW area/ Isabella. The hotel was nice, busy, kid friendly, all the positive things you might expect. We upgraded to an ocean view for a modest amount. We did have to have them fix […] our AC and unclog the sink drain, but they did that easily and quickly. Although I had been told we would have to take a boat to the beach, I didn't realize what a "production" it would be. It was fine for one day.. kind of an adventure but I wouldn't be happy if I had to do that for an entire week of vacation. The private island is good if you have a family... there is basketball, volleyball, etc. activities and food, but the beach itself is rocky and not that nice in my opinion. We ate at the hotel twice (breakfast one day, lunch the other). The staff was very friendly but I didn't think the food was anything to repeat. All and all, it was fine and good for what we wanted, but I would try a different place the next time I go. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I just returned from a four night stay at El Conquistador. It is a beautiful resort and I had a great experience overall. I would highly recommend this resort - the place is beautiful, accommodations are great and staff are very friendly.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful property with amazing views."
We visited with 2 kids (6 & 8) and had a great vacation. You won't believe how pretty the property is when you first drive up. Recommendations are: Water slide after 4:00 pm when price drops to $5.00 per person. Visit Palomino Island on free shuttle and enjoy beautiful beach - you can rent rafts, jet skis, etc. Climb trail to top of mountain for great […] view of island. Rent a car if you want to take short drives to El Yunque, Old San Juan and have more dining options. There are lots of fun restaurants within 5 minutes as you leave resort property and turn right. "Beautiful hotel, poor management"
Very nice hotel in a gorgeous location. Nice rooms. Horrible and super expensive food. Outrageous prices i.e. $20 for sunscreen. Horrible concierge services. Info given by concierge seldom matched what was going on. We were told all restaurants were booked every evening we were there. But when we went to the restaurants, they were empty. We called to […] have a leak fixed in our bathroom on Monday. They called at 9 PM Wednesday to see if it was fixed. Small kids sleeping then. With better management this place would be great. Water park not included in rooms. Very expensive and not much to it. Beach on separate island, but ferry to island down one whole day. Refrigerator in rooms but $15 rental per day for microwave. Beautiful grounds. Good beds. Bring your own food and drinks. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful Location, underwhelming experience"
My wife and I stayed here recently with our infant son. We enjoyed ourselves and the hotel grounds and location are incredible. With that being said, we were a little underwhelmed with the experience. We found the staff wasn't particularly friendly or attentive, often loitering around chatting in groups. Housekeeping only made it to our room two of […] the five days of our stay before 4pm when we had returned to our room to rest before dinner. We would recommend not staying down the hillside at Las Olas or La Marina as it was a thirty minute round trip back to the main lobby or restaurants (or for a deactivated room key) via the gondola. The AC in our room was incredibly loud and strangely the phone would ring at all hours of the night. The food was expensive and not much to choose from but what we had was well done. If we return to Puerto Rico we would probably stay somewhere else. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Resort with great private island"
We greatly enjoyed our experience at this resort. It is on a cliff with an additional area by a quick tram to the marina area. We stayed in a vaulted ceiling ocean view marina room. I would recommend staying in La Marina. It is close to the ferry and the rooms seem more inviting that then general hotel. Our room was very clean and adequately appointed. […] The bathroom was large and the view amazing. More than enough towels and amenities were provided. The resort pools were clean, never crowded and you could easily find a pool chair at any time. Pool towels were also plentiful. The hotel and bar staff were very pleasant and helpful. We used the main pool, the pool half way to the marina and the water park. All were great. The water park has 3 slides and a small lazy river, the chairs here can be placed to look out over the ocean. The best part of this resort is the private beach island, don't miss it. The food was very good, but very expensive. The Stingray Restaurant was quite good. The pina colada's with coconut rum were excellent. We enjoyed several of our dinners at the local village which is a five minute walk from the resort's marina area. Good quality and much less expensive. The village also has tour excursion stands and local crafts stands. We took the hiking tour to the rain forest trough the hotel, our guide was wonderful, and I would recommend this tour. "I wish I would have read the other reviews"
We decided to stay because we got a good rate, but don't let the Expedia rate fool you as you will pay additional resort charges and the food and drink prices are egregious. Here are my thoughts after being away for only one day: -The room itself met our minimum standard, but the bathrooms need updating and the TVs are small -Even though we booked […] two rooms the hotel did not get us adjoining rooms as requested -The food and drinks are WAY overpriced. Get a rental car and enjoy some of the local restaurants and pick-up your own water, drinks, snacks, etc. Yelp was a great tool for helping us find food. -Palomino Island is beautiful, but it is too shallow for real swimming and the rocks in the water hurt your feet. Bring water shoes. If you are hoping that this island offers snorkeling, boogie boarding, etc. you are out of luck. They will rent these items to you, but don't bother. -The pools are nice - probably the best thing this hotel has going for it besides the views which are spectacular. -Plan ahead as activities get sold out fast. You may be better off with a rental car and doing your own sightseeing. -The hostess at the outdoor casual dining restaurant was rude and said that we asked for things that we did not -We were over charged twice at the restaurants and had to have them fix the bill -The golf course looked great, but we did not play Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful Views from the main level of the Resort."
The views from the main pool/hotel were amazing. The private island beach was a fun day trip. No beach at the actual resort you must take the ferry to the private island. The Rooms down by the marina were not in very good condition. Our hot water at our bathroom sink did not work. Our friends room had a leak in the ceiling so they had to change rooms. […] The walls are paper thin so you can hear everything. Frogs, birds, mopping in the hallway etc. The room felt old and dirty. Beds were really low to the floor and the sheets were not fitted sheets so they slipped around and you end up on the naked mattress. Gross! There was only one small garbage can in the room. It would have been nice to have at least 2. One for the bathroom and one for the main room. I was surprised we weren't given a daily activities calendar. We never knew what was going on in the resort or at what time. It was strange that some fountains were not in working order. In the Blossoms restaurant there was a broken light fixture and it also had burnt out bulbs. Very tacky for such a nice restaurant. Food was good! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not sure if we will return"
I've visited Puerto Rico quite a few times with my family - it is one of our favorite places to Spring Break. This was our first stay at this hotel and it was a mixed experience. The service was no where close to what we expected at a resort of this quality – there were a few staff members that were particularly nice, but everyone else acted like they […] were having a bad day and it was our fault. Some areas seemed to be understaffed. The resort is beautiful (if a little older), the location is very scenic, the pools and waterpark are very nice, the beach is nice (even though we didn’t like having to be ferried back and forth). The kids had a great time. However, by the end of our stay we were very, very, very tired of all of the extra charges and tipping everyone. I expected to be nickel and dimed but it got ridiculous – separate charges for individual pieces of snorkel equipment (mask, vest, fins etc), extra charge for an umbrella at the beach, no outside food and drink allowed anywhere ever. "Fine Resort with Some Reservations"
Pleasant, accommodating staff. Wi-Fi needs upgrading. Blossoms restaurant had very poor service. Concierge staff needs better training - had incorrect and/or incomplete driving directions to several island locations. Failed to have taxi available at prescribed time. Maid failed to empty ice bucket each morning. Dead bolt on door did not work. Very […] nice beach. Breakfast buffet was good. Italian, seafood and Ballyhoo restaurants were excellent. Water park was worth the $5 cost per person after 4. Families with small kids might find the$20 full cost per person (less for small children) for a full day worth the cost. "Not what we expected"
Was shell shocked by the price gouging we experienced. There is an understanding things will be more expensive at a resort, but this was excessive. Further after 5pm you can no longer get to the beach and most everything closes at 6pm on the resort. We also paid extra for a full ocean view which was lacking and was more of a view of a road and a parking […] lot. Nice hotel. Rooms were a bit dated but clean and comfortable. Staff was outstanding. Grounds are fantastic. Palomino Island is very nice. Bring water shoes. Lots of coral in the surf. Stingray restaurant was great. All the others were mediocre at best. Chops steakhouse was very expensive. You can get the same at home for much less. The hotel will discourage […] you from leaving the grounds, but go. Explore the local restaurants. Pasion and YiDukas are $20 cab rides away and well worth the trip. Eat REAL Puerto Rican food. "Was once a first class hotel but not today..."
We were at the hotel for a business meeting for 4 nights. The facilities are large and beautiful but the maintenance and housekeeping in the rooms was not at the same level. Our room was large but the layout was strange (closet in the bathroom). There were maintenance issues which we immediately noticed including a painted over plastic toilet seat (what […] was someone thinking) and air vents full of dust. There were also housekeeping issues such as large stains on the towels and no washcloths. The WiFi was so bad it was unusable (no wonder it was free). The carpet was wet and needed to be vacuumed. To their credit the hotel staff worked to remedy the situation by changing the toilet seat and replacing the towels but the WiFi never got fixed even after speaking with technical support. There also appeared to be an issue with the cleaning of the hallways where we frequently found trash and cigarette butts. We found hotel staff just walking by these items without thinking about cleaning them up. It appears that housekeeping is a problem throughout. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful setting, nice facilities, awesome staff"
This was the perfect place for a long weekend luxury get away. The setting, buildings, landscaping, and pool / outdoor areas are all arranged and kept up with care and an eye for flair without being overly "trendy" or "hip". It is not the W but it is not your grand-dad's Waldorf Astoria either. The staff are all very helpful, outgoing, sweet and knowledgeable. […] The island beach is fun and well kept, although do not expect roaring surf - it is in a protected area and is not same as say a Florida or California beach. Do not fool yourself into thinking it will be a 'budget' vacation just cuz you book at a savings on Expedia - drinks and food are not cheap (although everything in the convenience store / snack bar off the lobby are very reasonably priced) and you must pay a daily 'resort fee', and it's only fair to be generous with the tips for the staff - just accept that and forget about it and you'll be fine. This is not the place to be cheap (I heard some hick in cargo shorts and Reeboks at the poolside complaining about having to tip everyone) or dress cheap or act cheap - this is a nice resort and you need to be in that mode. TOO SHORT OF A STAY! REALLY LOVED OUR WEEKEND AT EL CONQUISTADOR!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I would and have recommended this hotel. I was intially concerned about the garden view room that I had booked, but it turned out to be absolutely beautiful and peaceful. The grounds are breathtaking and exceptionally well maintained. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I especially loved the private island. The resort provides the guests with […] a nice catamaran ride to and from the hotel and private beach on the island every 1/2 hour throughout the day. The beach on the island was very nice and there was plenty to do.. or simply do nothing and relax. They have a nice little water park that give the kids something to do. That was a nice touch. The only complaint I have would be the price of food. VERY expensive (this is common to resorts). 2 small, thin crust, not so good pizza and a beer came out to $50 plus tip. The food was so/so at the quick pool side restauraunts. There are higher end restauraunts throughout the resort that looked very delicious, but we did not eat at any of them. The entire week was a disappointment. Over priced hotel rooms in need of upgrades, grounds in disrepair, walls, walkways cracking. Over priced restaurants where the food was mediocre at best. "Nice resort stay for first time to Puerto Rico"
I was looking for an easy, relaxing vacation to Puerto Rico. The El Conquistador fit the bill perfectly. My family (4 adults and 3 children) and I spent Thanksgiving weekend at The El Conquistador hotel and was very disappointed. We had Thanksgiving dinner at the hotel and what we were served was barely edible, thank goodness the portions we SMALL (but expensive). Every other restaurant we ate in always over charged us. Once by the pier it was only an […] extra beer. Than at the steak restaurant children ate free before 6 pm, we confirmed this with the waitress, but upon receiving the check the children were still charged (sorry oversite). The last time it was my wife and me at the Italian restaurant and we just has two simple meals. But, when the check came there was additional salads and bottled water on the check. I can understand it happening once by mistake, but when it happened at all the restaurants it does not sit well with me. I definitely feel like I paid too much for what I got. The outside of the resort is beautiful but then when you get to your room your smile turns into being confused. The shower was nasty. There was black grime all over. Then the bed had blankets and pillows that smelled like someone had wrapped up their sweaty body in it and then it was just left for […] the next person. When we called about it, it took 30 minutes to get new blankets and there was no apology. There were also mosquitos all over and I have bites on my arms and legs. "Nice hotel with a perfect view"
Loved this hotel and it's location; the staff was friendly and helpful. I recommend booking any excursion trips you would like to do before you arrive at the hotel since many things I had wanted to do were booked solid. I was able to book a kayak trip to the bioluminescent lagoon, but we were the final spots and all trips to the El Yunque rainforest […] were booked as well as snorkeling trips and trips to Culebra. I also found the hotel could be a little pricey so be prepared to pay 9-10 dollars for drinks and double for food. My experience with the food is don't waste money on the expensive dining that require reservations, the Ballhoo bar right next to the Marina had the best food and drinks and so did the Cafe Bella Vista up the stairs from the main pool; for Spanish food go to Cafe Caribe. Also to save money on alcohol, go to the La Marina Cafe and buy bottles of alcohol and mixers, they had the cheapest prices for alcohol and we saved money by mixing our own drinks in water and soda bottles. Also, the Coqui water park is $20 per person a day but entry from 4pm until they close around 5 or 6pm is $5; look out for the iguanas by the lazy river, they do go in the water since it is built in a natural iguana habitat. "Beautiful and relaxing"
Overall my husband and I had a very good experience at the hotel. Every one of the staff we dealt with was excellent - very courteous and helpful. The property is beautiful and wonderfully landscaped. We stayed in an ocean view room that was nice but I think could use a few changes. The oddest thing for me is that they have the coffee machine, ice bucket […] and glasses set up on a table in the bathroom, pretty much right next to the toilet. I find this very off-putting to say the least. The room itself was decent but nothing spectacular. As far as meal options go, we ate at several of the restaurants. The smaller bar restaurants are just ok. They could use a little more variety from place to place and PLEASE get fresh buns for your sandwiches and burgers - without exception they were dry. Chop House had excellent food overall but the meal was rather rushed. Stingray, the seafood restaurant was good also but I made the mistake of ordering lamb chops which were horrible. I know - why get lamb chops at a seafood place, but I asked the waiter what was a better choice between the salmon or the lamb and he said definitely the lamb. Apparently they were trying to get rid of them. The Italian restaurant and the Asian/Chinese were alright. Should be better for what they charge. Palomino Island is beautiful and we enjoyed the ferry ride over. I also think the hotel should have some nightly entertainment for adults. Because of the staff, beach, and weather, we would most likely go back. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
