first impressions were not brilliant as the hotel was surrounded by many homeless people, and being next to the greyhound station this was a problem throughout our stay and made my fiancee very uncomfortable. Rooms were very small as expected but the standard of housekeeping left an awful lot to be desired. reception staff were helpful and the business centre was excellent. unfortunately the over riding impression was not good

We found ourselves stuck at the airport on a trip back from Texas. With no departure in sight, we opted to spend the night in San Diego. We got onto Hotels.com, found a few options and selected the Sofia for location and price. The guys at check-in were friendly and helpful. The room was small but nicely appointed and comfortable. We were only here for one night but will definitely check out the Sofia on our next visit to San Diego.

So my boyfriend and I decided to get away at the last minute, just us two trying to be spontaneous. We went onto hotels.com to search for places to stay in SD, came across a very gerat deal for this hotel (Black Friday sales, 50% off stay). So we usually stay at bunky places, you know considering we don't really stay in the room anyway, we just "need a place to sleep", but this time I wanted to be in a nice hotel and just have a nice place to stay, period. When we came to the hotel, we were very pleased. The lobby itself looked very inviting and comfortable. The rooms were well maintained, but the only downfall was the size of the rooms, a bit small for 2 adults (we got the deluxe room with 1 queen size bed). The sink and shower were in seperate areas which was great because it allowed one person to do something as the other do something else. The hotel's location was the best part. We were literally walking distance from the Horton Plaza - where all the main shopping area is located. Overall, we enjoyed out stay very much so.

The room I had was very small. You can only see the other rooms from the window. You don't see much else. No sky or the sun. So you need to keep the lights on while you are in the room. It had no tub. However, everything was very well maintained despite the age of the building and it was pretty quiet. So I was satisfied. I'd stay again but maybe request a bigger room.

located in downtown SD, this historical hotel features a boutique style (as you can probably see in big cities, i.e. NYC), with traditional outfit. Personally the concierge service and check-in were satisfactory. The small room was a bit disappointing, even though I usually don't mind the size of room. The shower booth was literally 1 foot from the door, and the width of entrance was about 2 feet. However, bed linens and other utilities were very good in condition. The interior design was also quite up-to-date, like its modern facade. If you're with family, I would recommend to get a bigger room. Mine was the 1 queen size bed one (probably smallest).

The staff was efficient and helpful--they rapdily moved me to another room when the T.V. in the first room didn't work well. In fact, a front desk people actually did the move. But the standard rooms are pretty small. Well located in downtown, across the street from the federal court house. Need to overlook homeless problem downtown(people sleeping on sidewalk --at locations other than near the hotel); it's a city problem and not a problem with hotel. I would stay again if needed to do business at courthouse again. The price was right.

This hotel, built in the 1920s, was upgraded beautifully. The decor in the room was fresh with a comfortable bed. The rest of the hotel was decorated perfectly, with that old-world charm still left in places. It is a beautiful building from the outside, really standing out among all the modern office buildings. The location was perfect: close to the Gaslamp District and close to the water. We walked or rode the bus everywhere! The only complaint I would have is there are quite a few bums in the area. The staff was excellent, with great restaurant suggestions and direction on how to get around the city. We will definitely stay there again if we return to San Diego.

I really like the charm and "boutique" feel of the hotel. Not a big chain-type but more personal and stylish. The room was very comfortable, although definitely on the smaller side (which I did not mind, but is worth noting). Found the fitness gym to be well equipped although a little cramped--a lot of equipment (which is good), but not a lot of room. Only drawback was that is was further from the convention center than I had anticipated. Front desk said a 20 minute walk. There is a convenient trolley you can take, however, which runs fairly frequently.

The hotel itself was very modern, but that was about it. The rooms are very small. The room numbers on the door are very hard to read. TV reception was terrible, and we had a light in our room that didn't work. There is no privacy within your own room, in other words the bathroom doesn't have a lock on the door. Hotel staff was amazingly friendly, however you MUST use Valet parking at ($28/a night). There's really no way around it, the Valet staff was pretty much rude and gave bad vibes everytime we walked by them. I'd rather spend more money on my next trip to San Diego and stay at a better hotel.

The small restaurant and bar were good. Parking in the area is limited and the hotel charges $28/night for valet parking which includes "ins and outs." Surrounded by one-way streets driving around the hotel, including locating the valet parking, is a bit confusing the first time. I'll definitely check on the Sofia if my travels take me back to San Diego.
