"Stay away from the spa services"
We stayed at this hotel for my Fiance's birthday The hotel was nice enough, the rooms were a bit on the small side. But the restaurant has GREAT breakfast, and it was nice and quiet. However don't bother getting any spa services. we scheduled a couples massage and it was possibly the worst service we've ever had. We asked them to focus on our shoulder […] & backs and they avoided these areas. Then over charged us for what they provided Save your time and money Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great place in San Diego"
Great place to stay. I was rhere for three nights and enjoyed it all. Very clean and the price you could not beat with hotels .com.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
A single night stay, room was very small but to be expected in old hotel. Shower was modern, almost too modern with no curtain but clean and good shower pressure. Beds comfey, clean and services was great. Checkin pleasant and efficient... over all no complains really. Had a nice stay, would return!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"a bump in the road"
Everything was great with the exception of checking in. I got my room keys and the room # was written on my room keys cards. When trying to get into my room, the housekeeping service said that room is occupied. The door wouldn't open and the sign on the door said privacy please. I then checked my receipt and the room # differed from what was written […] on the card. I went back to the desk and stated the issue. The desk attendant "Ennzo" was apologetic and resissued new room keys. Then asked if I'd like a bottle of champagne delivered to my room. I said that's fine. Moments later the door knocked. Room service brought me a bottle of cheap chardonnay. I was told champagne. We don't have any sir. I denied the bottle as what was promised was not delivered. Follow through with what you say to keep things in good standing. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
surprisingly cute little gem of a hotel, without the big price. I would stay here anytime I'm in San Diego.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

$34 just to park your car. Got charged a resort fee twice; once when I booked the room and again when I checked out. Place is a cash-grab.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location hsame about the dark rooms"
room was extremely dark and inadequate lighting. Bathroom needed modernizing too.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was a great stay. I went down for the weekend with my girlfriend and I actually got engaged at the hotel restaurant!!! The staff was wonderful and helped with the proposal! The food is also wonderful too. The hotel allowed us to check out bikes. It allowed us to tour downtown and the harbor. It was a lot of fun!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"5 nights at the Sofia"
The condition of the room was nice, the room was small but that was fine for me. The sink did not drain, I messed with it a bit but couldn't figure out how to make the plug come up, some days the maid left it up, some down. The shower sprayed all over the place, kind of a mess, the towels were beautiful and soft, there was not do not disturb sign in […] the room, the walls in the sleeping area were very thin, I could hear everything the people in the room next to me said, luckily they went out at 11pm but sadly they returned to continue to have enthusiastic discussions at about 1am. I didn't get much sleep that night. Good news, they only spend one night. The bed was comfortable and the room temperature was good, not loud noises from the AC. There was a big chair in the room that really didn't fit, I think the space would have been more effective had there been one office chair that would have worked both as an office chair and a lounge instead of two chairs stuffed into the tiny space. This hotel is a perfect location for any activity in the Gaslight District. Well appointed, clean, wonderful bed, and excellent service. Somewhat noisy but expected in the 'city'.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cozy but a little noisy"
It was in downtown so the room is really small but understandable. The valet parking is $34. I have never paid that much for parking in my life... not even in Downtown LA. But the overall stay is pleasant, the staff is nice, room is clean. I do have 2 things to complain about besides the parking, 1) the water in the shower is really small (I usually […] take 15 mins to shower and it took me 30 mins here) and 2) it is near a fire station so you can hear the siren from the room pretty frequent. "Walking distance to Convention Center"
This was a fabulous hotel within walking distance to the convention center and Gaslamp. They charge you a fee like $10 per day and give you 2 water bottles a day, free yoga classes, free bike rentals (which I didn't use, so cannot comment). I took a trolley (blue line) from the Santa Fe Depot Station bc it was dark, but I wouldn't recommend that as […] walking at night felt frightening. To the airport, there's a bus 992 that stops very close to the hotel and takes you to the terminal for $2.25. In summary, nice boutique hotel in a nice area as long as you are walking during daylight. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Sofia Hotel - 10/19/2014"

"Super soft towels"
the hotel is in a nice part of downtown and within walking distance of a number of restaurants and attractions. The room was small and difficult for two people to move around in. However, it was very clean. The sheets and pillows were not the most comfortable, but the towels were thick and soft!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Although it is clear that the hotel had gone through a complete refurbishment, the ventilation system must had been forgotten in the process. The air-condition noise in the room was so loud, I had to switch it off in order to be able to sleep. The front desk staff, with few exceptions, looked lost and almost surprised when addressed and confronted with […] a question. The amenities left in my room had been used before (the little bottles were half full). In an area where most hotels are evenly priced, it is very unlikely I will return to the Sofia. "Nice restored hotel in convenient location"
Our group of five was in San Diego for a conference. Because of a previous positive experience at the Sofia, we booked it again. The hotel is well maintained and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Like many boutique hotels, the guest rooms are on the small side but adequate room for two people. If you prefer a large, expansive guest room you should […] consider another hotel. The location on Broadway is within convenient walking distance to the Santa Fe Depot, Little Italy, Horton Plaza, and the Gaslamp Quarter. The overnight parking charges at the hotel are absurd, but no different than what other SD hotels charge. If we didn't have to haul displays and other materials to the conference, I would have preferred to take the train. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"More than a 4 less than 5"
Great hotel and staff. Will recommend this place to anyone except for those with children and who travel heavy. Their standard rooms are a bit small but packed with amenities. Upgrade to the suite is nominal increase in charges. Worry free stay with complimentary everything including bikes, gym, bottled water, and Wi-Fi. Comfortable beds, good showers, […] but could use better separation from commode. Nice restaurant downstairs. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
It was truly lovely. It is one of the most comfortable and well-appointed hotels in which I have stayed in the past 10 years. After leaving, I traveled immediately to Washington, DC, where I stayed at a Hilton. The Hilton was totally boring and generic by comparison with the Sofia Hotel, despite the fact that the Hilton was twice the cost.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best birthday in years"
I enjoyed my stay. They weren't willing to change to a 2 bed room. Bed was super comfy. Free water nice! The plant by sink was very dusty and dirty. Decor great. Checkout desk guy was super friendly. Love the on site restaurantGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Euro-style elegance at a bargain price!"
The Sofia is a beautifully appointed, well-kept property in the heart of downtown San Diego. Steps away from Horton Plaza, the Gaslamp district, theatre district, and a 10 minute walk from the convention center, this hotel is ideally situated for any trip to this fine, clean city. The rooms are tastefully decorated in a very modern but restful style. […] All the rooms run to smallish in size, but have all the amenities: mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, large flat-screen TV, lovely feather-beds & duvets. The staff is marvelously friendly and helpful. The in-house restaurant (Currant) is exceptional! You must give the Sofia a try the next time you visit SD. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Everything was great. We were just disappointed that they charged more for parking then the other hotels downtown. $37! That's way too much for one night. I would not return because of this.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cute historic botique hotel"
This hotel is located in walking distance to many wonderful downtown area attractions. We actually never used our car. If we come down again next time we may use the Metrolink train,as that train depot is a few short blocks down the street, and would have saved on the $34 a day parking fee. When we checked in they upgraded us to suite for our 3rd wedding […] anniversary, which was awesome. Our room was very space with a living room and 2 tv's. They provide complimentary water bottles in the room too. We saw the other rooms as we walked buy during maid service, and yes they were smallish, but they were all nicely furnished. Remember this is an old historic hotel. They just didn't create big hotel rooms back in the day. The restaurant below is great, and offered a good breakfast, as well as wonderful cocktails and appetizers. My one complaint is on the second day we were out of our room by 9 am, and we're out until 4 pm and no one had cleaned the room. One of the house keepers was cleaning the room across the hall from us, when we got back, and when we asked if she was going to clean our room next she said "she doesn't do that side of the hall." Ok?? But there was no other house keeper in sight...it was strange. At any rate we went in and decided to not linger in the lobby for the Phantom maid to show up, and took a nap. The hotel did arrange for house keeping to come in and clean while we were at dinner, so the room was cleaned. Just wish it was done earlier while we were out originally. All in all we would come and stay again, they staff were nice, and the rooms were comfortable. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Expensive hotel with motel level service"
The room was like a pigeon hole. Hardly any place to move around. The view from room was terrible. Towels were dirty. Sheets had stains.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Nice property, lovely staff, reasonable price, good location. Non-Functioning air conditioning. It would run for a little bit, then I would wake up covered in sweat. The staff claimed the A/C was working as well as it ever works, probably true. On the last night I found that if I every hour or so, and opened and closed the room door, the A/C would turn […] on for a bit. Interrupted, but better sleep than the other nights where I finally would pass out for fatigue around 5am.. My suggestion is stay here in the winter, November through April. Other months, go somewhere else. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"It was alright"
The hotel was ok. The room was small. I think the parking would have been complimentary. $34.00 a day was a bit much.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I stayed by myself in a full or double room. It was comfortable for me, but would have been way too tight with 2 people. Clearly, a designer was at work, making the most of a small space. Really enjoyed it. Great location- I walked down to the harbor and lots of restaurants within easy walk. There are a few homeless people around, and I ended up taking […] one to dinner. We had a fascinating conversation. They didn't hassle me, they were very kind. Would love to go back. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice Hotel Downtown"
Room is small, but that is something to be expected downtown. Walking distance to everything situated in the downtown/gaslamp/seaport area. Take use of the amenities they have (bike, water in room, guided tour, yoga), because you are paying for it upon leaving (resort fee).Genuine Hotels.com guest review

This is a really lovely small hotel, right in the middle of the action. I walked to meetings at the Hyatt and Convention Center, to the Gaslamp District, and to the waterfront and USS Midway.
