Peninsula Island Resort & Spa - All Suites - South Padre Island

The staff is great, but the hotel itself is terribly maintained. Rooms were not clean, sheets were not washed, doors were rusted - it is not a luxury hotel from any angle. I would do additional research to find other hotels which fare better than this one.

Booked a King room, gave us a double. Room was not ready for chk in on time. Under construction. Gave us wrong remote for TV. Smelled like old mold. Called promptly at 11 am to chk us out! WILL NEVER STAY OR RECCOMMEND!

The resort wasn't what we expected. It wasn't a resort at all. Although the room was clean the whole facility was a little rundown. The pool rules weren't enforced. There was little kids running around there all hours of the day and night unsupervised. There was no reception area and the gym only had two treadmills in it. The hotel manager & staff had nice/nasty attitudes when I called to make certain that all was well a couple of days before my arrival. Someone made a mistake with the type of room that I requested & the staff insisted that no other room was available except the Presidential Suite, which costs $900+ more than the original amount. I asked to speak with […] the manager & was told that he would call me back & he never did. I called the next morning & was told that the manager would call me back & he never did. I eventually was forced to call Expedia, who then called the hotel & was told very quickly by the manager that they could accommodate me with the room that I originally requested. The manager never spoke to me directly regarding my issues & I was never offered an apology for the stress of the mix up from the Peninsula staff/manager. Because of kitchen issues I eventually upgraded to the Presidential Suite, which was very spacious; however, for the cost, I expected better. We experienced the following during our stay: tattered furniture, worn master bath mirror, rusted base under master bath cabinet, missing stove knob, broken oven, broken master bath air vent, broken patio door lock & no safety deposit box as was indicated upon arrival. Interestingly enough, I went to work out around 7am one morning & found police performing a crime investigation atop & around the building where I was staying; & paramedics retrieving a dead body from the ground (burglary gone bad)! Staff is very good very good. Parking is the only real negative. You have to walk a little bit to get from the lot to the hotel and the walkway is shared with cars. Nobody knew hours of the restaurant. Same w the salon. Would have loved to walked in for a cocktain & pedi. Our toilet clogged, luckily it did not over flow. We called the front desk at 9pm. She said maintenance would be right up. I also asked for late check out the next day but she couldn't tell me how much that would cost and would have a manager call. Nobody showed nor called. The next morning, we used the restroom in the gym and I made a stop to the front desk, immediately asking for the manager. He claimed there was a fire in a building. (Funny, I didn’t hear an alarm.) I also mentioned a late check out, to which he replied “I saw that you called.” My response included, “and you didn’t call?” So, he “kindly” accommodated because of the issue. Oh, and they failed to clean up 3 beer cans floating in the pool after some spring breakers had a good time; Just plain lazy considering a maintenance man walked by 4 or 5 times. We travel a lot and this is the most disappointing place we have ever gone..from the start! We arrived early and were told simply that our room was not ready, no restaurant open, to bar open (this is midday on a Wednesday) and offered nothing in the way of accommodations until 4:00 when it was check in time. There is no lobby, just a desk with one office […] personnel and a small couch. The pool was not heated, only one of the two hot tubs was heated and the "swim up bar" was non functional!! I have pictures! the "restaurant and bar" was nothing more than a restaurant that had a counter in it and was only open part time...never knew. The elevator (outside) was the slowest ever seen. Walking up five flights of stairs was faster. The worst part was that they manager didn't seem to care whether we were satisifed or not. Even upon leaving, he asked how our stay was and my husband replied "very disappointed" and his response was merely "sorry". He didn't even ask what we did/did not like about it. In addition, we had to walk a very long distance from the parking lot to the resort...there were two carts that we were told would take us back and forth,but we were only given a ride twice..they sat parked and on the two very worst weather days (cold, rain, wind) they remained plugged in at the other building..I have also sent my comments to the chamber, hoping they will keep someone else from making our mistake. My experience here at Peninsula Island Resort & Spa was a pretty mixed one, but overall turned out great!! Upon arriving, I really enjoyed that it straight off the causeway, which means great access on and off the island! The service wasn't too hot, though, took about 15 to 20 minutes to get checked in, rooms got mixed, and we wound up finding a random […] family trying to enter our room after there was a little fiasco going on at the front desk. Thankfully, the problem was solved lickety-split! The exterior looks nice, but some trims of the building and surrounding area are rusted from the salty sea air, but that didn't affect the wonderful elements the room itself had to offer. We slept in the presidential suite, (well, most of the 3 bedroom units here are considered "presidential"), and were definitely greeted with the full kitchen and washer/dryer combo!! The beds were super comfy, at least to my liking, and the imported furniture gave the place a really awesome flair!!! The Peninsula Reort and Spa is not a four star resort. This is not even close to a 4 star hotel. First of all, it doesn't even have a real lobby or amenities! There was no concierge or staff to really facilitate sight seeing or excursions. All of the room doors opened directly to the outside. It seems this is really a time-share or condo which rents space when it is available.
