"Should have been nicer with better front desk staf"
Sorry, but would not stay here again or recommend this hotel to anyone. We wll definately stay elsewhere when we go to South Padre. If I had not already been charged for the room would have never checked in to hotel. Front desk staff less then accomodatiing. Great beach front location (short walk over dunes across a boardwalk), very friendly staff and nice pool area do not make up for the shoddy condition of this facility. From very large issues (elevator alarming our entire stay, rusty tub and refrigerator, mold in bathroom) to minor (no pen and paper, no kleenex, no book listing resort amenities or local attractions) serious work is needed. Would not return.

We stayed at this resort for 7 nights through a timeshare exchange. We stayed in a three bedroom three bath oceanfront villa on the second floor. The location and view was outstanding. Couldn't get much better than that. The villa itself needs to be updated big time! Two of the bedrooms still have the old 'big back' tv's and the master bedroom has a tiny flat screen. The living room had a decent size flat screen. The off-white leather furniture in the living room was awful. It was cracked and didn't look sanitary at all. The villa as a whole just had a sterile feel to it and sometimes had an old basement like smell. We had a washer machine but no dryer. We were told they were waiting on a part for the dryer and it probably would not be available during our stay, which turned out to be true. They did offer to dry our clothes for us, but it really was no big deal. We washed a few things and just let them air dry. Very few people were at the resort due to the low season. The weather was beautiful. Everyday 85 (low humidity) and sunny. The beach was glorious. The balcony was very long, but with cheap furniture. The oceanfront view from the balcony made up for all other small nuances. The service was great. Juan (I think that was his name) checked us in and was very very helpful. We visited the restaurant on one night for dinner and we were the only guests. Our waiter was also the bartender and he was great. The steak wasn't the best, but his drinks were awesome. Overall we had no major complaints and this resort could be so much better with a complete and total renovation. Almost forgot the security situation. Basically there is no security. The entry gates to the resort remained open our entire stay. No one to greet you and check for a parking sign for your car. The lock on our door was laughable. My husband used the do not disturb plastic sign to see if he could jimmy our lock and guess what? The door opened. We went to the front desk with our concerns and they sent a maintenance man to our unit to put in a better lock, which he did. Also there is no safe in the room. With that being said, we didn't feel unsafe at all but we were very cautious. We would definitely visit South Padre Island again, especially during this time of year, but we would probably choose another place to stay.

We booked this quick getaway on Groupon and read reviews so we knew not to expect 5 star quality. Yes there is quite a walk from parking lot to hotel. Neither hot tubs worked and according to staff they've been trying to fix it for weeks. We booked the "king studio" which was actually 2 full size beds. One was pretty comfortable and the other was terrible. On the plus side the staff was friendly, the atmosphere was nice. The restaurant was pretty good and very close to the beach. Overall I would come back, probably better as a family trip.
"Nice Staff, Needs Maintenance"

I don't expect hotels on South Padre Island to be perfect, given the climate (salty air) and number of people who visit. The staff at Peninsula is very nice and helpful. The location is great - on the beach. I reserved a king suite but somehow ended up with a two bedroom/two bathroom suite. The balcony overlooked the pool, and I could see a glimpse of the beach, which was nice. The room itself needed some maintenance (light switch/ceiling fan panel missing, some blinds on windows missing or broken, closet door hardware missing, rust on bathroom mirror, wall art broken, definitely needs fresh paint). The bathroom was clean. The rest of the place felt like it needed to be cleaned with disinfectant wipes. I didn't sit on the couches or chairs because they had marks or stains on them - some of which would probably come off easily. In a couple of places on the walls, there were spots (one of them about 6 inches) that I tried to convince myself were not blood. The bed was not at all soft and felt very cheap. Quite a bit of light came through the windows - wish I had taken my sleeping mask. The pool looked clean. I didn't eat at the restaurant or go to the spa. There are about four handicap parking spots by the buildings. The rest of the parking is a short walk away. The staff is very good about transporting guests back and forth from the parking lot on golf carts. I think this hotel would be much nicer if they did some minor renovation work, were more meticulous about cleaning all parts of the suites and maintained the facility more.
"Average/Very Good with potential for Excellent"

We stayed here for 7 days, had our wedding on the beach in front of Peninsula Island, and had our dinner and reception in the restaurant. Parking is pretty far out but not a huge deal as you can drive right up to the hotel and drop off guests and get your luggage, etc. and you get a ride on the golf cart most of the time. No biggie. Front desk area does leave a little to be desired but it serves it's purpose. Only one person got a massage at the spa and they reported it was great. Pool area is awesome with a great view. Lower pool is heated upper is not. The hot tub unfortunately was not working. We stayed in one of the 3 bedroom suites, most specifically the bottom floor nearest the pool facing the ocean. Although we sacrificed the view that the 2nd floor and above rooms have the convenience and the grass area in front were great. We had the closest room to the beach and rinse off showers with easy access through the huge patio. Highly recommend this room, 102a, or the one next to it, 101a. Suite itself is great, huge living room with 2 couches, chair, dining table for 10, good kitchen, the master suite was great with a nice big private bath and patio, other 2 bedrooms each had a bathroom and 2 beds. Our only issue was our dryer was not working, not great but the front desk did our laundry so just an inconvenience, Our other guests stayed in another 3 bedroom suite and 6 other King and 2 bed suites. All were nice, couple minor issues that maintenance was able to resolve. The cocktail hour, dinner and reception at the restaurant overall was great, again a couple minor issues and one major one but still was a great choice for our wedding. The fact that all our guests stayed here, our wedding was right on the beach in front and the dinner in the restaurant was the key selling point for us and we loved it. The restaurant is good size with a great wait staff, good bar staff and drinks and chef was great. We had the entire restaurant for our dinner and the front patio. Main entrée we served was Asparagus Chicken Roll with Poblano Cream Sauce with mashed potatoes and wedding vegetables. Non-meat eaters had fettuccine alfredo. Both were excellent as well as the salads and dinner rolls. The only issue this particular night was the temperature of the restaurant, AC was not working properly and half the fans also quite working for a time. We ended up opening the extra door to the patio to get some air flow. Happy overall with our choice. We spoke with the manager upon checkout and are confident enough in him and the fact that he is working to improve the property and the service that we will be back again. We toured almost every hotel in Padre when wedding shopping and there is not a better place to have a wedding for a smaller party, ours was 40 people.
"Great Hotel in South Padre Island!"
I travel often for work and have stayed at countless hotels so felt compelled to write this after the Peninsula Hotel exceeded my expectations. My room was immaculate, spacious and had a great view. The service was very attentive, and the restaurant offered a varied menu of good quality food. I would highly recommend this hotel to families or couples looking for a weekend getaway!

"Less than meets the eye"

We were looking forward to this trip this summer, because we spent almost twice what we spent the year before to stay at a "resort" instead of a hotel. Unfortunately we had a very disappointing start to our stay and it lingered the entire 5 nights. Upon arrival the check-in area is a small office with a desk and a couple of chairs, it looks like the entrance to the maintenance area. There isn't a lot of space for parking near the buildings to unload. I can't imagine how chaotic it is during the busy season. The room entrances are outdoors like a motel. There are two buildings and each tower only has one elevator. If you are in a hurry or trying to check in or out while house keeping is using the elevators, plan on waiting or using the stairs as we did our entire stay. The parking lot is over 160 yards from the towers. I am not exaggerating, I shot it with a golf range finder. The room was average with many flaws, like a broken lampshade and exhaust fan in the bathroom, for what we paid per night. Here is where our problem started. We walked into our room and the thermostat read 80 degrees. We couldn't get the unit to come on so we called the front desk. They quickly sent a maintenance man up and he flipped a switch and told us 30 minutes. I asked if it was just a breaker and he nodded. Little did I know he didn't speak any English. We actually left that night to go to a golf tournament and spent the night in another city, thinking everything would be good to go when we got back. When we got back the next day our room was still 80 degrees. We again called the front desk and they sent another young man up that worked in and out of the room for about an hour. The kids were ready to go to the beach so my wife took the three of them to the pool to tide them over thinking we would be able to leave soon. One of us had to be in the room with the workers, who also didn't speak English. After an hour he leaves and tells me "un momento". I sat on the balcony watching my wife and three boys playing in the pool, which is very nice. Half an hour later I see the guy who told me un momento carrying a plate of food over to the other building. My wife walked into the office and they told her the head guy would be back shortly. Thirty minutes later I called and they told me the head maintenance man had to make an hour round trip to get a part. An hour later I see a HVAC van pull up and I am thinking finally. It took him 15 minutes to make it up to the room with the young man who told me "un momento". I started questioning him and he told me that he was an independent AC guy they just called 40 minutes ago. He charged the freon for 5 minutes and he was gone. The "resort" had basically lied to me and not once apologized or tried to compensate me for my half day spent in my hot hotel room. I was stuck there from 12:00 noon til about 4:30 in the afternoon. I canceled my appointment with the sales guy that wanted to try to sell me a time share, which I believe is one of their main goals with guests arriving. He called Thursday morning before we checked out on Friday and asked how our stay went and I explained to him that I felt like I was lied to, which was my first and only impression of their service, and would never stay here again. He then said let me call you back and "I will speak to the manager to see what he could do". He called back a couple of minutes later and said he hoped I would enjoy the rest of my stay. It was what I expected after my first encounter. We booked through Hotwire, so we were pre-paid and they weren't losing any money. We were down there about two weeks after the 4th of July. Just to add a little fuel to the fire, they charged us for two pieces of candy they claimed we ate and didn't, $3 each. I never got over the first day and will find a different place to stay next year. This is our summer destination. I feel sorry for the next guests in that room, as we were packing up that Friday morning the room started getting hot again and we didn't tell the front desk. Enter at your own risk, I guess we were just the lucky one, or unlucky one.
"A nice, clean beach close to home"

In my opinion south Padre Island has the nicest beaches in Texas. My wife and I booked a three-day stay at the Peninsula Island Resort&Spa with Travelocity.com which offered a very attractive package. Our suite included a main bedroom with a balcony overlooking the ocean, a very nice bathroom and another room with a sleeper sofa, a dining table, a microwave oven and a small fridge. The swimming pool is large and there is bar service available where they make a "mean" pina colada. The restaurant offers an excellent menu featuring a wide variety of seafood dishes. I particularly recommend the "ceviche" The beach is well kept and although it is not very long it lends itself to very nice walks. The only downside to our stay was that on the second day we found out that our package did not include the cleaning of our room and that if we wanted it cleaned it would cost an extra $40 a day. "Best Resort HANDS DOWN!"

This is by far the best resort I have had the pleasure of staying in. The scenic views are above any other I have seen personally and the service was BEYOND five stars. In fact, if I could put in 10 I would! I highly recommend Peninsula Island Resort & Spa the next time you are in South Padre Island. You will not regret it!
