"A Pleasant Stay"
My husband and I stayed for two nights and had a very relaxing time. We enjoyed the proximity to the beach (right across the street). It was nice to have the bar/restraunt on site. There was live entertinment each evening in the outside bar until 9:00 and we enjoyed sitting outside our room on the balcony listening to the great music.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location but bad for those with allergies"
Booked this hotel for a wedding we were attending in Cape May. The good: excellent location, right across the from the beach and just down the street from the local sights such as restaurants, recreational activities, and pedestrian mall. The bad: The room, while visibly clean, was musty and drove our allergies crazy. The room was an efficiency unit […] with a living room, small galley kitchenette and separate bedroom, however, the only air conditioner was an old wall mounted unit in the bedroom. As such, the air in the room generally had a clammy humid feel. Our room also lacked some basics, as there was no room phone. You are definitely paying for the location with this place, the but I'm not sure you want to stay here for more than a night. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"nice lounge chairs @ the beach with umbrella"
perfect place for families with kids or groups. They have a wonderful outside space with entertainment, chairs on the sand around a fire pit and an outside restaurant with pick nick tables. Right at the beach and close to the center.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Okay but not Handicapped Accessible"
08/18/14 Teach220 King of Prussia, Pennsylvania
The Beach Shack was just okay. I was told there were no Handicapped parking places and the rooms/grounds are not handicapped accessible. I thought all motels had to have some handicapped parking places. The WiFi only worked in the restaurant or at the pool but not in the rooms. The decor is dated and needs some updating. For the price, it was just okay. The Rusty Nail restaurant was decent but slow service especially at breakfast. The people were very nice and the housekeeping did a great job with clean towels, etc.
"Wonderful entertainment and excellent food"

Spent last weekend in Cape May and just loved it. The beach was beautiful and spending time at the Beach Shack was a very friendly family oriented experience! They even have dog friendly rooms. The staff were all very professional, positive, and helpful. Had several delicious meals at the Rusty Nail as well. The service was excellent and I enjoyed the fish wrap as well as some strawberry wings that were better than I expected. The outdoor entertainment was very enjoyable as well as the fire pit. Sat by the fire with my feet in the sand on a very comfortable adirondack chair. An overall wonderful experience! Can't wait to go back again!!!
"Extremely disappointed. Way overpriced."

If it weren't for the beach chairs/umbrellas and the helpful and courteous staff I would give zero stars. We loved the idea of taking our family vacation in Cape May at a family friendly resort. Unfortunately the Beach Shack was not at all what we had hoped for. We stayed from Saturday 8/9 until Wed 8/13 for around $400 per night which is ridiculous for this motel. First the Cons: Very overpriced. The rooms are very dated to say the least. The carpet was absolutely disgusting. Our 9 month old baby crawled on the floor and it left black marks on her hands, knees and tops of feet. At first we hoped it was just from the beach but we cleaned her and let her crawl again and she was dirty again. The room has a very musty smell. There isn't a phone in the room. Bathroom was moldy and warped. Bathroom door needed repairs as the wood was very beat up. Bedroom clock apparently never gets set. It was about 6 hours ahead. (simple thing, but easy fix for management....who is running this place?) **when you check out there is no itemized bill from the Rusty Nail restaurant. They show multiple charges for each visit but not indication as to what it's for so unless you save all your receipts there is no way to verify the billing is correct . Pros: Location is great. Beach is right there. Rusty Nail restaurant is very fun and has live music. Food is also pretty good. Friendly staff Parking was always available right in front of the motel. Overall we were very unsatisfied with our stay, we felt taken advantage of. Although this motel is affiliated with the Cape Resorts, it is in no way a "resort" and not comparable to their other properties. This is a MOTEL not a resort. We plan to stay elsewhere next visit.
"Will not return"

Other than the location, which is prime, that's where it ended for us. Service at the restaurant was awful!! Slow, slow and slow! No phones in the room to order room service and their wifi wouldn't let us on so there was no cell phone service! They told me to leave the restaurant at 10pm because I had a 3 year old boy. Mind you, we were on the couches and not sitting at the bar. Then I couldn't order a drink at the bar until I threw away the drink I had in my hand from my room. I booked online where I said I had a dog. We had to move rooms the 2nd day because they said we weren't in a dog friendly room. Very inconvenient! The woman at the desk was very professional and nice. Very pricey for what we got. Would not recommend this to anyone. Better hotels for the money elsewhere.
"Underwhelming for the price(Pros and Cons)"

Just returned from an excellent vacation in Cape May but the Beach Shack was very underwhelming for the price they charge.I stayed in Room 320 which was recommended by one of the reviews and I would not recommend this room. The 3rd floor is fantastic as far as the ocean views but my view was obstructed by the roof of the Rusty Nail restaurant. There are no elevators at the hotel so you need to carry everything up 3 flights of stairs.(There is staff to help you if you want)The bathroom is very small but the biggest problem is the lack of storage space. If the bathroom had a vanity included you can at least store your toiletries somewhere .The garbage trucks pick up right below your room and you often hear the empty bottles from the Rusty Nail clanging into the dumpster. The room does have a slight musty odor which was evident again when I had to wash all my clothes when I returned home (even the unworn pieces )because the musty smell permeated throughout. The pool is nothing special. The Pros....The location is awesome and convenient to everywhere. The beach chair & umbrella service is a big plus except they do collect everything around 5 pm.The beds and the pillows are extremely comfortable and the staff is very courteous and helpful.I think the hotel is just average for the price they charge.
"Not a lot a bang for your buck..."

We stayed at this hotel because of the location and because of the reputation of the Cape Resort properties. My husband and I have stayed at Congress Hall before and thought this would be a good option because this was a family vacation (6 adults, 3 kids). We stayed 4 nights (Saturday - Wednesday). First the good things: Check-in was smooth and the staff was nice; the pool is clean and they provide towels; plenty of parking for guests; mini-fridge in the room was big enough to hold a decent amount of food and drinks; chairs, umbrellas and towels all set up for you on the beach. Now for the not so good things... The hotel itself is completely outdated. Old decor, carpets, etc. The locks don't work for some of the rooms. My sister had alot of trouble getting in and out of her room due to the locks. The bathroom is really small; not the worst thing in the world but still. Housekeeping took forever to come to your room even if you put the sign on the door. My sister didn't have a sign so I gave her mine because they wouldn't clean her room till 3pm and that is when my niece takes a nap. Also, you would think they would vacuum the room every day since its a beach hotel but no luck. I couldn't let my 9 month old baby on the floor because of this. The free wifi is spotty at best. I couldn't connect from my room and was told it had to do with Apple products. When I finally was able to get a connection it would work half the time which means I used alot of my data plan. For the amount of money they charge the hotel should also provide beach passes. When I asked the check-in desk staff they said the manager doesn't even though they know other hotels do. Its not that expensive (3 day pass for $12) but considering we spent on average $350/night plus taxes and fees this would have been a nice gesture for guests. Also The Rusty Nail restaurant is part of the hotel and they have pool servers that come by but later in the day it took 30 minutes to get someone to come to the pool even after asking the staff at the restaurant to come over. Good food though... The bathroom lights went out and it took a full day to get power in the bathroom so I had to use my phone flashlight at night. My husband told the front desk twice about the power but it didn't matter. The AC unit in our room also needed a new filter but I don't think they planned on changing it until after we checked out. Overall, the hotel is in a good location but for what they charge there are a lot of other good hotels that are far better value.
"Won't Be Back"

We did not have a great stay at the Beach Shack. While this property is part of the Cape Resorts properties (Congress Hall, Star Inn, etc.), it has had a slipshod renovation at best and was not worth the $500+ per night price. We started by checking into our "family suite" which turned out to be merely a hotel room with an open doorway to the "bedroom," not offering us any privacy at all from the two teens we were traveling with. We wound up taping up a bed sheet in the doorway to get at least a little privacy. The air conditioning unit in the room was extremely noisy and inefficient. Having it on sounded like someone was vacuuming right in the room which was particularly difficult when trying to sleep at night. And even without the sheet between the "rooms," the unit, placed in the back of the room, did not adequately reach the front room to cool it. The bathroom renovation was very chintzy--the toilet paper holder was on a crooked piece of wood and the original beige tub and floor tiles from the 1960s remained. And there was some weird neon green touch up paint on the walls in the bath. The towel situation at the pool was not ideal. Clean towels were put out on every chair in the morning, but later in the day it was difficult to tell which had really been used/were "dirty," versus which were not and getting clean towels for our chairs when we returned from the beach took awhile. Washing all this laundry is expensive and perhaps if they used a better system for the towels where you got your own and turned them in when you were finished it would be more efficient and would result in less costly laundry and a more affordable room price. On the plus side, the bed was relatively comfortable and it was nice having a kitchen area, refrigerator and microwave. And the ocean views from our second floor room were incomparable. However, overall, this place was MUCH too expensive at $500+ a night. There are a lot of other lovely properties in Cape May for less which we will explore on our next trip.
"In need of TLC"

We typically stay at the Virginia Hotel, which is also owned by Cape Resorts and since we like it so much we decided to book a couple of rooms for a mini family reunion at the Beach Shack. While the location is good, we were all disappointed with the condition of the rooms and grounds of the building. It seems as though they did not spend any money renovating this old Howard Johnson Motel. If I was the owner, I would undertake a renovation of the rooms as well as rejuvenate the tennis courts behind the building. If you are concerned with any music, there is the Rusty Nail which is a bar that plays live music most days until 9:00PM. This did not bother me as much as the kids playing shuffle board in front of my room at 6:00AM. We will not be back until we see some positive changes to the condition of the property.
"Nice room, and affordable views of the ocean - but beware under powered AC unit."

We did an extended weekend at the beach shack... we opted for the family suite with a bedroom for the my wife and I and a pull out sofa for our 8 year old. The room had a decent mini fridge, microwave and TV. Loved walking across the street to the beach concierge service where for a smile and a small tip the beach boys set up your umbrellas and chairs. We splurged for a cabana, but in the end you get more breeze and closer to the ocean with the umbrella and chair. Food service on the beach is expensive but its the same food as you get from the Rusty Nail and tasty. Also note - no booze on the Jersey beach - some folks around us we're cheating but we choose to wait until happy hour. The drawbacks - air conditioning was a simple wall unit and it huffed and it puffed and barely cooled the room. Also my wife and I wanted to close the door to the family room (wink - it was vacation), but then the AC flow to the family room was shut off, drawing complaints from the 8 year old. Overall I liked the relaxed, laid back vibe - but this is much more casual and rough than Congress Hall up the street. Service was up to snuff for a place owned by the Congress Hall folks.
"Great holiday place"

This is the second time our family has been to Cape May, and the Beach Shack remains an enjoyable experience. It's not the most sophisticated of places, and the rooms could be improved (noisy air conditioning, tiny bathrooms), but that is outweighed by the prime location facing the beach, and the great atmosphere of the bar and restaurant. We appreciated the policy of stopping the live outside entertainment at 9pm, which is helpful for families with young children needing their sleep! Staff is friendly, and the food is good value for money - the children raved about the ribs and burger at the Rusty Nail.
