My husband and I stayed at Marshall Slocum House over the Fourth of July Weekend. The B&B was perfectly situated very close to Newport's mansions and the waterfront. Mark was a wonderful host and we enjoyed the delicious breakfast (lots of choices!) on the outdoor deck each morning. Our room was very comfortable and nicely decorated, and the all-day […] tea and coffee and afternoon cookies available downstairs were a nice added touch. Couldn't be happier! "Nice Newport Inn, fair price"
We enjoyed our stay very much; very nicely kept, clean and comfortable inn, close to everything. Off street parking and good breakfast included, and given the prices for surrounding hotels, fairly priced for what you get. Housekeeping excellent. Nice touch with robes in the room. Would have liked more light in the bathroom itself, plenty of light in […] the rooms, but could have used another lamp or fixture in the bathroom for shaving and makeup. Mark and the staff were very nice and helpful. I am sure we would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice Inn close to town"
This is a terrific Inn in a quiet neighborhood, easy walk to the wharf. Very comfortable, great breakfast, and friendly and helpful hosts. Nice front porch to sip a glass of wine, backyard deck to eat breakfast. Would definitely return!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Our very first B&B experience, and it was lovely."
Lovely home, clean, convenient, easy walk to lots of great shops, the wharf, places to eat. They even provide an IPad with Netflix. Shower in the room is a big plus! The herbed eggs for breakfast were excellent! :)Genuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient Location and Ambiance"
Mark and Dana are excellent on-site innkeepers who make every effort to meet their guests' needs. Their B&B features attractively decorated private rooms, beautifully landscaped grounds, and delicious breakfasts featuring several choices each day. During our most recent stay, our fellow guests ranged in age from their twenties to sixties and came from […] as far away as Uruguay...so this place is quickly becoming a widely-known destination! "Topnotch bed and breakfast"
The Marshall Slocum Inn is quiet oasis located on a street of fine mid-19th century houses only 10 minutes' walk from Newport Harbor. Mark, the owner, is a friendly, low-key host, who cooks a terrific breakfast. Strongly recommended.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A New England Charmer"
Quintessential New England. This period house B&B is perfectly decorated and maintained. Mark, our host, keeps the breakfast menu changing each day, and always has choices for every appetite. We completely enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this charming B&B, within walking distance of most Newport attractions.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice bed and breakfast"
For people who love to walk this bed and breakfast was within walking distance to most Newport, RI attractions. We walked to all of the area mansions, with the farthest being only about two miles away (one way). The downtown and wharf area were only about a half mile (one way) away. We walked everywhere.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Comfy, small and friendly."
There was a lot of extra tourism information and the owner had gone to great lengths to ensue a full and varied program during the stay. Best breakfast of our holiday personally cooked by the owner. Intimate with only 6 rooms which were clean and comfy. Great old world charm in a prestigious area.Genuine Expedia guest review

"A Cozy Bed & Breakfast For All To Enjoy"
My wife and I love staying at bed & breakfast establishments, however The Marshall Slocum House has exceeded are expectations. The staff were very professional and courteous above and beyond what we expected. Mark, the owner made it a point to meet with us every morning of our stay just to have a down home conversation. He made a great breakfast each […] morning for my wife and I. He was very knowledgeable about the history and area and made sure we did not spend money that was going to be a waste of time. We were there from Monday to Thursday and each day all his rooms were occupied and each person had nothing but good things to say. I recommend anyone looking to stay at a bed & breakfast in Newport Rhode Island to stay at the Marshall Slocum House, it is well worth the money and it will exceed your expectations as well. "Great Newport B&B"
I found the staff to be immensely helpful and polite. The owner, Mark, was incredibly accomodating to our schedule and flight delay. Mark even allowed us to store our luggage at the house after checkout, giving us time to further explore Newport while waiting for our late afternoon flight. Room was cleaner than the Hyatt on Goat Island we had just […] left. Will definately be staying there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"The Quintessential New England B&B with Elegance"
Such a charming and immaculately kept B&B. Elegant in an understated and most lovely way. It was spotlessly clean, not only our room, but everything. The staff was friendly, but not too much so, so that you could just do your own thing without imposed conversation. The front porch is wonderful, (we were there in July) as my husband and I spent our mornings […] out there after breakfast. And the street it is on is charming as well, with other houses and lots of trees and very quiet, enough away from the busy traffic on Thames, which is about 5 blocks away, but 1 block from Bellevue, which has the mansions to visit, and a more quiet shopping and cafe experience with less of the tourist feeling. Breakfast was served on the back deck each morning and was delicious, with several choices. We were within walking distance of everything. If we were to go back to Newport, we would stay there for sure - the quintessential New England B&B that you don't want to miss. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We loved our stay here. Mark was a great host giving lots of useful tips for dining and activities in the area. Our room was on the top floor and very clean Lots of personal touches in this place - warmed mugs, baked goods each afternoon, iPads in rooms.
Nichtsdestotrotz alles in allem ziemlich teuer. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Gem in Newport"
12/13/14 peterStratfordCt Stratford Ct
We stayed at this fine B&B Dec.5-6 in order to attend the Governor's Ball at Salve Regina University in Newport. We have attended the Ball for several years now and visited Newport many times for other reasons. One of our group of 7 had stayed at the Marshall Slocum the past summer and asked everyone if we'd like to take her recommendation.Well,we were happy we did.The Inn is certainly comparable to many other fine B&B's we have frequented. All the rooms we could peek in on, seemed beautiful and spacious. The beds were very comfortable and the Inn was immaculate. Both evenings we enjoyed some food and wine at the downstairs dining room table where we sat for hours .The breakfast was undoubtedly one of our best B&B breakfasts ever. Never before at a B&B have we ever had a breakfast selection like this. There were about 8 selections prepared by the chef/owner that all enjoyed. In addition the Inn had plenty of on-site, off-street parking which is the exception not the rule in Newport. Our stay exceeded our expectations and our plan is that the whole group will return here next year !
"Ground Floor Front Room is BRILLIANT"

Never before have we needed STEPS to get into the bed, but what a bed! This is a gem of a place. I can only endorse previous comments re: the excellent breakfast spread and chatty and knowledgeable host/chef who serves. We were only there a night and had wondered if it was worth breaking our trip between NYC and Boston but were so glad we took 24 hours and slipped into Newport and The Marshall Slocum; it was actually just sufficient time to wander the village and shops and see where the yachts race on the first evening; then do a Cliff Walk and visit 2 houses ( enough!!) on the 2nd day before a late lunch and headed off on the 4p.m. bus to Boston. This little Inn is well appointed with a good range of toiletries, fluffy towels, and quality linen.. it's a class act. And it's no accident that it's owned and run by someone who appreciates travel ; SO nice to find someone in hospitality who has spent time in NZ and has such fond memories of the place! The attention to detail sets this place a notch above others.
"Great Guest House"

Had a really enjoyable couple of nights here. The house is full of charm and the owner/chef is really accommodating and friendly. No sooner had we explained that us Brits like HP sauce with our breakfasts he'd got on to Amazon and ordered some! Coffee and tea was available most of the time in the dining room along with very tempting treats like cookies and brownies. We weren't actually staying in the house, instead we were next door in a granny flat and our friends were in the converted garage! Having said that the rooms were really nice and beds very comfortable. You can hire bikes for a small fee which is a great way to get around but you're also in easy walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants.
"A great place to stay in Newport"
11/23/14 Robert C Melbourne, Australia
Newport is busy even in late-October so we had to ring a couple of places before getting set at the Marshall Slocum. Even then we had to change rooms for the second night, but this was no problem for our friendly host who organised everything. The first night we stayed in the cottage alongside the parking area and it was delightful being totally private and self-contained and very well equipped. On the second night we stayed in the front room with the 4-poster bed featured on the website and it too was very nice. The breakfasts were fantastic with a range of cooked options, excellent omellettes with fruit accompaniments, and the outdoor deck-area is also pleasant and very popular with guests for the complimentary afternoon tea. We were too late for tea and had a couple of glasses of wine instead in readiness for dinner! This is a nice place to stay and is within walking distance of the waterfront and restaurants.

Loved this place. Room was fantastic. Food fantastic. Room details, bathroom, coffee, close to town. Definitely would go again. Had breakfast on the deck. Accommodated our dietary restrictions. Plenty to do in town. Ten minute walk to the warf.

Comfortable small guest house with good sized rooms. It is handily placed for walking to the town. Friendly and welcoming staff. Really lovely breakfast, best we had during our trip and we stayed at a number of hotels. I have no hesitation in recommending this guest house, I cannot fault it. Also, an i pad is provided for your free use in the room, a nice touch.
"Wonderful, characterful and peaceful"
11/17/14 Jonathan H Colchester
We spent two days in this lovely old inn at the top of the town and in a room at the very top of the building. A short walk from the town but far enough out to be quiet and restful, this is a lovely guest house. A wonderful friendly young lady checked us in after a long drive from Vermont and the owner was very helpful and a great cook. Lovely, characterful house with a pleasant breakfast terrace, the Marshall Slocum is very close to the bustle and buzz of the waterfront area and a great base for exploring the lovely town of Newport with its historic houses, and you can buy the admission tickets at the Marshall Slocum which is also a bonus. This was the penultimate stop on our New England road trip and it was a very pleasant and comfortable short stay in Newport.

My group of 5 (3 rooms) enjoyed our stay here immensely. We took up the apartment, the snuggery and the library rooms and all were very warm, comfortable, clean, and well-stocked. Netflix on the iPad was a really nice touch, as was the home-baked afternoon tea delights. Breakfast was a total highlight - thanks, Mark! Lauren was very helpful (maps, info) on check in.
"Nice Newport Inn"
11/12/14 Meltp Melbourne, Australia
I stayed here with my niece as part of our recent road trip in Connecticut and Rhode Island and it was lovely. Lauren was super helpful at check in, discussing our plans and providing a map with some restaurant and attraction suggestions marked out. We tried two of Lauren's recommendations for dinner both nights and they were great, spot on. One the Black Pearl and the other Brick Alley. The Inn dining area has tea and coffee all day with a small selection of baked goods provided each afternoon which was nice. Morning breakfast was delicious with a menu of about half a dozen choices, prepared fresh for you by Mark. I had an Omlette one day and French Toast the next, both really yummy. It was a highlight to meet other guests at morning breakfast , we met some great people and had fun talks over breakfast. The rooms are quiet and spotless, and a really good size. My bed was a beautiful four poster and very comfortable. The neighbourhood was very quiet and despite the Inn being full it was pretty peaceful. I will say that as with any old house you can hear people on the floorboards above you etc but all in all not a problem. Downtown and the harbour are only a few blocks down the hill and given the crazy parking rates in Newport you are best to walk or use the free tourist tram to get around. The tram, which goes out to the mansions, is only a block and a half from the inn. Overall a lovely stay and would recommend this inn for a night or two from which to explore RI.
11/10/14 abarber Boston, Massachusetts
My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary, and it was the perfect treat! The owners are friendly and professional, and have put a lot of effort and thought into their B&B. Every room is tastefully and comfortably appointed. As we checked in, Lauren asked us a few questions about our plans while we were in the area, and she marked up a map with some restaurant and attraction suggestions. Her restaurant picks were exactly what we were looking for! After we left our bags in the room, we came downstairs to find an afternoon tea with freshly baked scones -- delicious! The tea and coffee station was fully stocked with flavor shots, a nice touch. The rooms are quiet, immaculately kept, and very thoughtfully appointed. There are cozy bathrobes in the closet and an ipad loaded with netflix in every room (there is also a tv in the sitting area downstairs). We were pleasantly surprised at how large our room was, and the bed was very comfortable. Judging by the cars in the parking lot and the number of people at breakfast, the place must have been close to fully booked, but we didn't hear a peep from any of the other rooms. The neighborhood seems to be a mix of residential and inns, and is fairly quiet as well (although obviously we were there during the off-season). But it's only a few blocks to the downtown area and all the shops and restaurants. The breakfast was fantastic and is made to order by Mark. I had the salted caramel french toast and my husband had one of the omelettes. We enjoyed meeting some of the other guests, although it was still warm enough that we could have sat outside on the back deck and enjoyed the yard. I can't say enough good things about this property, and I hope we'll be back in the Spring!
