Craiglynne Hotel - Grantown-on-Spey

This hotel is a mixed bag, depending on your luck you may enjoy it or hate it. The public areas are great, the panoramic windows in the beautiful restaurant impressive and the breakfast supreb. But, the room was lousy, a mixture of renovated and run down elements (faded vinyl floor in the bathrooom and a new bathtub; worn out furniture and a flat screen […] TV, etc) as if the hotel did not dare to have a complete renovation. Worst was the ancient heating system by pipes along the wall that could not be regulated. The room was hot like a sauna, and even the freezing wind from the open window did not help the sweat. Just as bad was the fact that the restaurant and the reception both close at 8PM. We arrived at 7:50PM and were turned away from the restaurant, going to bed after eating some crackers that we carried with us. In addition the view from our window consisted of a shaft looking over other windows. At the bottom of the shaft was a filthy plastic roof covered with heaps of bird droppings. To top it off, most of the other guests seems to be over 70, giving the place the appearance of a nursing home. We arrived at the hotel in the late afternoon/early evening after driving and touring The Highlands all day. When we checked in, we asked about restaurants in the area. The front desk clerk said she knew of one restaurant but we could certainly eat at the hotel restaurant. There were 7 in our group. We freshened up and met at the Bar for a drink and […] were told that the restaurant had just closed. At no time did the front desk clerk tell us that the restaurant was closing soon. In addition, the front desk was also closed so there was no one to talk to about other arrangements for dinner. We asked the bartenders and they did not seem to know of any restaurants in the town other than a Chinese restaurant. We got in our car and drove to another hotel and they directed us to a wonderful restaurant where the service was warm and welcoming and the diningroom was packed. We had a wonderful dinner at The Garth Hotel. We also felt the photo of The Craiglynne Hotel on the website was quite deceiving. We expected the hotel to be located on a large piece of property but, instead, the front property was small and, because there was no other parking, all of the cars were lined up in front of the building. Of all the places we had booked to stay in The Highlands, I was most looking forward to staying at The Craiglynne. I was disappointed. Read more

Unsuitable for wheelchair users despite it being listed as so. Standard of refurbishment was suspect, rooms were very small and some had very squeaky floorboards. Breakfast was disappointing: coffee too bitter, porridge too watery and the scrambled egg excessively salty. Couldn't see out of the window due to condensation trapped between the panes. Years ago I think the Craiglynne Hotel was probably a beautiful place. It needs to be redone. Although quite beautiful from the outside, the rooms and the lobby need to be renovated. It might have a certain charm for some people but I was disappointed. Perhaps the older, mostly retired, patrons liked this old charm but I wouldn't recommend the place […] for anyone under 50. My room was probably the most disappointing part - it had a smell that I couldn't at first identify then I discovered that the shower curtain was badly in need of a cleaning. They replaced it on the second day I was there, after I asked once. The staff tried to be helpful but they seemed to try too hard, particularly in the dining room. One of my fellow travelers was disappointed at dinner when two the entrees he asked for were not available. The food, even though a third choice for my friend, was quite good. I understand that the ownership of the hotel has recently changed so it may be that more improvements will be taking place soon. It is an excellent location, in terms of seeing the Highlands and the town, Granton-on-Spey, is quaint and pretty. Read more
