Htel Berna is in a good location fro exploring Milan and the Lakes, 100m from the metro and 200m from station. The breakfast is as good as all the reviews say, wth a huge choice available from 7am to 11am. The complimentary soft drink mini-bar, which is refilled daily, is great, and apples and biscuits are available throughout the day in reception. We stayed in a standard room, which was quiet and adequate, although smaller than some 4* hotels. I have given it a "3" as the bed was not as comfortable as I would have liked and the shower was more like a tap (no showerhead). The staff put the folowing day's weather forecast in the lift everyday, which was helpful, as was the free A4 sheet of news available in many languages at breakfast. The free internet in reception is also good. I would recommend this hotle as it is good value for money. The area you are in is not good for shops and restaurants, and a fair distance from the centre (ok if you can manage the metro - 10mins on direct line to Duomo). I have stayed in better 4* hotels, but for the price paid (£67/night) it was great.

It was ok. The breakfast was really good and the area was perfect for the central station. We used the metro a lot so that was great. The area at night wasn't great but you can forget about that knowing you are only 10 minutes tube ride from the centre of milan. The service at the hotel was good and they provided a good service where they keep hold of your bags if your outward flight is late in the day. It is free of Charge.

Although most of the reviews we read were positive, we didn't realise the hotel would be as good as it actually was. The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was lovely and as it was from 7 to 11 very convenient too. We decided on an executive room which, although it was on the other side of the street to the main hotel, was very comfortable. We would love to stay there again. Hotel tries to be have a "grand" interior, and is certainly clean and well run, but looking closely, it is clear that they are making the best of an old building and some old fittings. (standard) Rooms not very spacious. However, for a city centre hotel, it is perfectly acceptable - I've stayed in worse in Milan - the differenct between 3* and this, a 4*, is significant.

I upgraded our reservations to a superior room this time, and found the room to be much smaller and a bit more "worn" than our last visit. I understand the hotel has done some renovation and now has a special new section that obviously rate one step above "superior". A bit disappointed since our last visit, although front desk was most helpful and good breakfast buffet included with large selection of items.

On our second stay we were greet with a friendly "Welcome back" when we walked into reception. Our room was spotlessly clean, although the first was a little tired looking, and the bathroom in need of a little "facelift". However these were minor issues in view of the what we felt was a great deal. Breakfast is worth staying for. Contrary to what we have experienced in most European hotels of that standard, we were given a wide choice of foods, buffet style, each morning. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the staff. This hotel came across pretty much like the previous reviews-- nicely kept, good staff, and excellent location, if you're coming in via Milano Cenrale rail station. It's literally a 5 minute walk away, just down the block from the McDonald's (southeast of the stazione). We were basically only there for the evening, in transit from Lake Como, due to fly out of Linate the next day. There was an asian market across the street, and a couple restaurants in the vicinity, one pizza place which seemed popular enough. Our hotel desk clerk, however, suggested we walk 15-20' to the Mediterranea Brassierie for dinner, and this took us through more deserted neighborhoods, which made my wife feel a little uncomfortable. The restaurant itself, however, was very good and also fairly popular with middle-to-upscale clientale. I guess these folks either walked, too, or taxi'ed or drove themselves. We chose to walk more busy main streets on our way back, which made a slightly longer walk, but a little more enjoyable. Hotel Berna's breakfast buffet was very, very good-- the best we had in Italy, considering that we stayed mainly at 3 star hotels. The usual eggs, meat, etc., but also lots of fresh fruit, pastries, and, curiously, desserts like panna cotta and tirumisu?! Because we "were hotels.com" customers, we were given two free 30min passes for WiFi access to the internet, which was all we really needed to check email and do our online check-in's for the airport. Not sure if that meant we would have gotten more-- or fewer-- minutes if we booked another way. We'd probably stay here again.

Travelled as a couple and we found the hotel excellent. Staff were very friendly and organised tickets to the San Siro for us. The rooms are very clean and cool (important in Italian summers) The only shortcoming was that the rooms were smaller than we expected when looking at the sight. Although the location is right beside the main train/metro station, the street outside the hotel is frequented by ladies of the night throughout the day! However, as this hotel is much cheaper than many of its equivalents the staff, clean rooms and tremendous buffet breakfast make up for the small pointers above.

The location of this hotel is prefect, it is about 5 mintues walk away from the Central Station and underground. Also the main street for local shopping is only half a mile away (not the top end shops). Staff are ever so helpful. Breakfast is brilliant, there are so many choices and it serve until 11am so you don't have to spend another 50 euros for lunch! We stayed in the superior room, the Non-alcoholic open bar and coffee bar is ONLY included if you book direct via their website, so we got stung for a bottle of water and 2 cans of soft drinks for 22 euros. The room itself is very dated, it looks like a B&B back in the 70s, it is very clean but the aircon was not working properly. The control will only go down to 27C, outside temp was 30C so I would not say it is fully aircon. My advice is to stay somewhere during the summer, the room gets very hot! I think this hotel is ok after all (if you book it with discount, i.e. stay 3 night and get 1 night free), will not pay full price for it tho.

Good wireless internet connection. The breakfast buffet was wonderful! The best we had at any of our lodgings in Italy. My only complaint was that the taxis at the train station would not take us to the hotel, because it was too close! This would not normally be a problem, but my wife had injured her foot earlier in the trip and a quarter mile pulling luggage along was slow and difficult.
