"Our Expectations Were Exceeded"
This 5 star hotel, conveniently located near the train station in Amsterdam was close to shops, sightseeing, restaurants and tram lines. There was nowhere that was difficult to reach, either by foot, train or tram. The staff was exceptionally helpful and made many wonderful suggestions regarding where we might eat. At the time of our visit there was […] construction going on which caused changes in tram service. There was also a marathon on one of the days which resulted in rerouting of trams. In both cases the staff was well informed about changes and helpful in suggesting alternatives. We always felt most welcome and never felt like we were asking too much or "bothering" anyone. The hotel is beautiful and spacious without being pretentious. I would recommend it to almost anyone who wants to have a wonderful time in this beautiful city. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Perhaps this grand hotel was a five star once, but not today. Room was comfortable, but small. Common areas & hallways worn & in need of updating. Staff however was very attentive.Genuine Expedia guest review
"This hotel helped make our trip special"
We feel like this hotel really made our trip. We stayed 5 nights. Arrived before noon, but they were able to put us in our room right away. Helpful bellman showed us the way and explained all the amenities in the room. Other reviewers mentioned the free minibar and it was one of the attractions of this hotel, and I have to say that just knowing it was […] there was awesome! Mostly used the bottled water but also had wine a few nights. The in-room Nespresso machine was also a wonderful bonus. Room was big by European standards with very high ceilings and remote control drapes. Wonderful Rituals brand toiletries and my husband loved the tall shower with rainshower head. Our bathroom was a bit narrow with toilet just opposite the shower - it made for some interesting ballet moves if we were both in the bathroom at once but was certainly workable. Easy walk from the Central Station and to the rest of the main things to see in Amsterdam. We left Amsterdam for a day and returned and booked a chain hotel for our last night at the same price point. My husband and I both agree - our stay would not have seemed as fun if we were at that hotel for 5 days rather than the Amrath. It made our trip. Happy with the rate we got through Expedia. Hotel from outside well designed, beautiful and very nice location, from inside it looks old except some of the furnitures which are renewed. "5th Stay at Amrath"
This was my fifth stay here this year. I love this hotel! I keep coming through here on business trips and we also spent our Birthdays here in August and it was amazing. The staff, food, rooms, everything is wonderful. We will be back again this year for sure.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great 4 star Hotel!"
We arrived early and the staff checked us in immediately. We had lost a camera on a train in Italy and they were helpful by calling the mislayed property line for the Malpensa Express. Very comfortable bed with lovely linens. Bar refrigerator items in room were free. Auto closing draperies. Excellent breakfast buffet for 25E, not free. Great main floor […] bar with small meals. "Amsterdam Hotel with exceptional service."
Fantastic service from everyone I encountered (except for the loud and abrasive old Canadian guest checking in next to me!). I was fortunate to have been upgraded for my one night, great room. However the service is what set this hotel apart from others hotels. I will stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel was beautiful. Lots of history to surround yourself in. Room was great. A little pricey BUT wifi is free (if you can get a good connection), corteaousy bar is included ( if you can get it filled).Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Don't stay here!"
This overpriced, overrated hotel was the worst ever for me as a seasoned traveler. The most I ever paid for a hotel room, are you kidding me! Our room was like an oven with no A/C. We were offered fans and not a room change. The fans were about the size of my palm, what we often see in a 99 cent store. The gym was full of BROKEN equipment and the pool […] attendant was non-existent! There was no concierge until the day we checked out. The way to the room was a maze, but at least the hallways were cooler! This hotel reminded me of Stephen King's, The Shining!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Close to everything in Amsterdam"
Even with a rainy day, it was great to be in such a nice building. It is close to all public transportation. Breakfast was a nice experience, dinner was fine and the building is so special, that if you are an Art Deco admirer, you have to see this and experience the Dutch style of Art Deco and beautiful craftmenship.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great location. Rooms are huge,"
Located just close enough to Central Station, but not close enough to be bothered by the crowds. The staff was helpful always, and the rooms were cleaned in a timely fashion. The only drawback was the lack of air conditioning but it was it enough to really be an issue. The bathrooms were spacious enough to move around in, and once I located the toilet […] (across front the main bathroom), all was well after that. I would recommend this hotel without a doubt. The neighborhood had everything we needed. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"I love this hotel"
Despite how much I love this hotel, the free minibar, the decor, and the location, I do have two complaints: 1)Checking in can take a while because how they are set up; at most two people or groups can check in at a time, and if there is a group in front of you, good luck. Needless to say, this is not the end of the world. 2)I've stayed here three times, […] each time for multiple days, and every time I stay here, I have to have my room key reset every day. Not sure why, and the staff does not tell you this when you check in. In fact, the hotel staff seems to be as confused about it as me. We walked to everything from this hotel. e.g. the van Gogh museum is far away (by foot), but if you plan your day right, there are plenty of other things to see on your way back, so if the weather cooperates, it's a great walk. Just a little off the beaten path, the Grand Hotel was a wonderful find in Amsterdam. The staff were consistently helpful, the room was large, especially for a European city, and very clean. A free mini bar and swimming pool were an unexpected extra pleasure. We would stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"An excellent hotel, centrally located"
This is a first rate hotel which is centrally located within walking distance of Central Station, Dam Square and the cruise piers. The staff is first rate as are the facilities. "Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam"
We enjoyed our time in the hotel. They do not have air conditioning which normally no problem but we had some hot and humid days, would have been nice to have AC. Staff was pleasant and helpful. We had the French breakfast in the am. Was plenty of food for $13 Euro. The big buffet was $25. We never ate dinner there. "Sixth stay and counting."
As usual we were received warmly and within minutes we were given the keys to our room. Anyone who traveled to Amsterdam knows that accommodations are generally rather small or cramped but not when staying at this hotel, rooms are extremely spacious with high ceilings and lots of natural light. As for the bathroom, it is well equipped with both a shower […] and a bathtub. What really makes staying at the Grand Amrath hotel is the comfiest bed i have ever slept on, i can only say that it will be very difficult to get out of in the morning. "Wonderful hotel and staff"
Stayed here for 2 days on vacation. The rooms were large and well-furnished with great views of the skyline. The art deco decor of the public areas was unique and a nice change from the modern anonymous decor of most hotels in the city. The hotel staff was very friendly and welcoming. "Great 5-star hotel in Amsterdam"
We had a great time. The outside of the hotel is beautiful, and it reminds me of a castle straight from the middle ages. The interior hallways could use some updating (carpet, etc.), and the workout facility could use some new/additional equipment. However, the room was perfect, and everything in the mini-bar was included with the nightly rate!!! This […] hotel is steps from the red light district and therefore very convenient for travelers. "Comfortable but the GYM is a joke!"
The hotel is comfortable, the free refill for the minibar is just awesome! But the gym is like a joke. They have 1 or 2 machines there and most of them are not working. They have only one treadmill. No Z-Bar no dumbells heavier than 5KGs. It's simply not a gym, some kind of a gym placeholder.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Can get very hot"
Nice older hotel, excellent architecture. Price was very reasonable for Amsterdam and I think I know why. They have a number of rooms slightly below street level where the windows have been barred shut. I stayed during the last week of July, and my room had to be close to 88F. It was only 75F outside, but with no windows, and no AC in the hotel, my […] room was sweltering. I knew this going in though from previous reviews, and the price was right. Free Wifi worked well. This would have been a great place to stay in the winter, but if you stay in the summer, and can't tolerate extreme heat, make sure you confirm your room has a window that can open. "Nice hotel in Amsterdam. Near the train station"
I wanted to provide you with feedback regarding my stay at your Hotel this last weekend. I booked this hotel through Expedia as a 5 star hotel in Amsterdam. My wife and myself stayed Saturday 7/27 and Sunday 7/28 in room 233. My first impression of the hotel from the outside was that the Hotel was monumental. Once I reached the entrance, and there was […] no porter or anybody to help us with our luggage, and just stairs to the lobby, the disappointment started. I do understand this is a historic hotel aged more than 100 years. Nevertheless, the entrance or Lobby was really poor and uninviting, added to the reception being in a contiguous room. No luxury or here. Then the biggest issue, no AC anywhere, neither in the lobby, the hallways or the rooms. I had never experienced a 5 star hotel without AC. I sweated all the way until I got to my room, and the place felt stuffy. The excuse was that this was a heat wave that will only last a few days (which I heard before as excuse in other places), and that the rest of the year there was no need for AC. I'm sorry, but not acceptable for a 5 star hotel. The whole Hotel should be at a comfortable temperature, not only for what the locals are used to, but for every guest. Then the actual hallways.... It was like going through a maze, while being escorted by a bellboy which was nice and tried hard in being helpful. But these hallways look really outdated and in bad repair, again being historic and all, does not mean that the carpets need Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great hotel, great location."
My wife and I had a great experience at the Grand Hotel Amrath for a 4 night stay. We were weary from a very long flight and were warmly welcomed as soon as we neared the front door. The exterior is magnificent, very neat building. The interior is old, it is an old building, but very well kept. The room's amenities were as described. The mini-bar was […] a very nice touch, and it was refilled every day as promised. The room was spacious by European standards. The only negative was the absurd prices for their restaurant, but that isn't a big deal as there are tons of cafes and other eateries within a 5 minute walk. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
If this is a five star hotel then I would be afraid to stay at a four star. It was a disgrace and a huge disappointment. The photos are quite deceiving. It might be a step up from a prison.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient but loud place to stay in Amsterdam"
The hotel is in a very convenient location being located very close to the Central Train station and the room (which we upgraded to a superior city view which I assumed would mean we would be on the canal but we were on the street side) was a very, very good size and nice BUT there was no air conditioning and it did get hot and if you opened the one […] window that would open, the traffic noise kept us awake. I would never have given the hotel five stars which is what they claim to be. Upon check-in we were told they would call a bellman but one never showed which is fine, we could carry our own bags but that would never happen in most five stars. The breakfast buffet was decent but definitely not worth the 25 Euros that they charged. One thing that did stand out was the free mini bar which they did keep stocked with drinks and the Nespresso machine in the room was a great bonus. The hotel is rather gothic and a little dreary but it is very clean as I said, a great location if you stay on the canal side. The concierge was helpful and all of the staff speak English. "Got hotel definitely not a 5*"
The hotel overall is ok. Good location great staff. Other than that no way this is a 5 star hotel. If anyone has been to a 5 star hotel know that this hotel cannot be called 5 stars. It's 100 year old building which is nice but other than that its not rooms are small, not clean (under coffee area was never cleaned, dirty spoons not watched properly […] after used), no AC only climate control which can be quite annoying in the summer room is too hot (hotel helped with a fan), room service menu is a joke 1 page for night menu 1 page for day menu with very limited options. So net net ok hotel good location don't expect 5 star except for the staff. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Beautiful hotel with views, spa and more!"
We enjoyed our stay very much. The check-in was easy, the staff were nice and pointed us to very cool breakfast place upon arrival. Even though hotel was pretty full, when in our room, we never heard anything or anyone. The architecture is amazing, the spa was awesome after walking all day, the views from our 4th floor room were beautiful. Definitely […] stay on upper floor w canal view. It's on a main road with lots of stuff, but I suggest you start your walks behind the hotel and wander from there. Its lovely, much quieter and you will find gems not seen on main road. "Convenient location, but rooms are a mixed bag"
Upon arrival, our "superior" rooms were extremely small, on the first floor, and directly at the level of a very busy street. The rooms were very warm and we were advised to open a window to cool things down. That was the issue - not only do the windows not have screens, but opening a window at street level of a busy street is way too noisy for sleeping. […] We had booked rooms with a "city view," but these rooms did not overlook the city - just the busy street. When we complained to the hotel staff, they were not able to move us to rooms on the canal side of the hotel, which is much quieter. These rooms were much larger and had a much better view, but we decided to spring for the extra 30 Euro/night because these were the only rooms available and the view and the much larger size was totally worth it. The staff generously offered to only charge us the extra fee for one of the three rooms we had booked and all three rooms were moved so we ended up enjoying the rooms very much. The location of the Amrath is just east of the seedy red light district and very near the train station. While convenient to get basically anywhere in Amsterdam using the incredible tram and bus system, the location may not be for everyone. The immediate surroundings of the hotel are beautiful and we never felt unsafe, even walking around at night. It just is what it is.There are other hotels in much lovelier neighborhoods, especially those near Museumplein, but we felt we got a good value. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Grand: luxurious, central, comfortable, spa"
En route to a family wedding in Antwerp we added a few days vacation in Amsterdam, and the Grand Amrath was the perfect choice. It REALLY is 'grand,' a beautiful example of Dutch art nouveau and a really pleasing conversion of an old shipping building into a unique and gorgeous luxury hotel. It is a short walk from the Central Station and very convenient […] to everything in Amsterdam by foot or by tram; it's right on a canal and offers amazing views of some incredible landmarks (the Nemo, for example, and the Tower of Tears) and the sight of it, flags waving from its beautiful roof, made us feel like we were coming home. Our room was a high-ceilinged haven of comfort with an absolutely PERFECT, comfy bed and a free minibar that was really perfect when it came to having a nightcap. AND...best of all...the spa in the basement (warm, inviting pool, hot tub, sauna, steamroom) was incredible after a day of cycling, sightseeing, museum-ing in Amsterdam. We adored this hotel and recommend it most highly! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
