The problem with this inn is that there is no one there to receive you or to hear you out if you had a problem with your room. No one answers the phone number listed and you have to leave a message. They leave you the key to your room and you have to pick it up by yourself and go there. If they forget to do that, which they did in my case, you are in hot soup. I had to go around town at midnight looking for another place to stay the first night in an unfamiliar town where everyone goes to sleep early! Another thing: since no one is there, they have no idea what is going on in the rooms. We paid for a room for 3. There was only one bed in there. They expected all 3 of us to sleep in one bed. Also, there were no cups for the self serve coffee and the toilet flush leaked all the time. There is no one there to report these problems to. Also, I did not feel safe there. The doors are open all night and anyone can come in. I had to move the chest and the armchair against the door to feel safe. I will never stay at this inn again.

The Greenleaf Inn is charming and casual. Upon entering the inn, visitors can expect to feel that they've stepped back in time. The original architecture of this Federal building has been preserved remarkably well. The room we stayed in was quiet and intimate, and was furnished with nice antiques. The bed was very comfortable. Our only quibble was that the bathroom had a shower stall rather than a tub. The Inn is a pleasant 10-minute walk into the heart of downtown Newburyport. The trade-off for the great price is that there is no breakfast served (a bowl of assorted packaged snacks is provided in the foyer) and housekeeping is extra if you are staying more than one night. A great place to stay if you're minding your budget and you don't expect a lot of amenities and pampering.
