Irving House At Harvard - Cambridge

The location is very convenient to Harvard Square, but the facility is average at best. You can do better for the money. Our room was on the third floor, had a private bath, and the room had some sort of "carpet like" squares on the floor. The room was small, and the bathroom was basic. There were soap and shampoo dispensers, not bars and small bottles […] as you would expect at this price. The breakfast was buffet style in the basement, and not much to be excited about. Enjoyed my stay. I knew going in that my room would not have a bathroom and I would have to use the community one. Which wasn't an issue I never had to wait to have access to it, or felt rushed getting out of the shower. Great breakfast spread.

Fantastic bed and breakfast located smack in the middle of Harvard. It's actually just off campus on a public road but literally a 30 second walk and you are on campus. It's about a 10 minute walk to the Harvard Square subway stop. I loved this place! Stayed in their cheapest room --- the single bed/shared bath and it was great for me. I was very disappointed from the very moment I arrived. First off, parking. The hotel or should I say "ROOMING HOUSE" is located at 24 Irving St. and I had to park my car behind 40 Irving and walk 9 houses with baggage in hand. There was no room for parking, not even for a Smart car. Secondly, no elevator. My wife and I had to walk up to the 4th floor […] kind of hard when you have had multiple surgeries on your ankle. I was torn when it came time to leave our room. The entry door was the same type of door that is used for bedroom or bathroom. It was constructed of very cheap material, so cheap someone with a Swiss Army Knife would gain access by carving their way in. I would not recommend this 'ROOMING HOUSE" to nobody. We picked this hotel somewhat randomly as a place to stay for a night near Harvard Square. We were quite delighted to find it to be an absolutely charming and comfortable little inn! The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The inn was well decorated and quaint. The room was small but comfortable enough. We were fortunate enough to find a room […] with a private bath, though there are some that share a bath. We were on the top floor but we didn't have a lot of luggage so this was not a problem. I found it wonderfully charming that the basement dining area had a community fridge where one might store leftovers or snacks for the night. It was fantastic to be able to park for free at the inn, though I can imagine there are situations in which the limited parking fills up. When we arrived at around 8 or 9, there were two spaces left. And it was definitely a tight squeeze. But it's Harvard Square, so what can you expect? Most other hotels charged extra for parking, so this was a welcome change. They even let us park a few hours past checkout so we had a little more time to enjoy Harvard Square! But the most wonderful surprise was the delightful breakfast that awaited us in the morning! There was a wonderful selection of cereals, breads, jams and spreads. There were wonderful little quiches and popovers. And one of the most charming things was a selection of loose teas and tea pots so we could brew our very own pot of tea! We look forward to staying here again next time we visit Harvard Square! We stayed at the Irving House visiting friends in Cambridge. It's a good value with a comprehensive breakfast included in the room price. Room 204 was very clean though small, with private bath. Parking lot is very tiny so only small cars will fit, but at least you don't have to look for an on street spot.

Irving House is more like an overgrown B&B than it is like a hotel. It's an old, sprawling, four-floor house that has been cut up into guest rooms. Consequently, the rooms (or at least the one I stayed in) are small, and the plumbing facilities less than luxurious (in my case just a shower stall that opened into the room and a closet sized lavatory). […] But the location is great, just a couple of blocks from the Harvard Campus. If you are like me who wants to stay around Boston but does not have a car (or decided to not bring it), this is a nifty place to stay. The pros of the place are (1) it is near the Red Line subway and several buses; recommend getting a 1-day or 7-day fun pass if staying longer, (2) they have a lot of accommodations for a small place including breakfast, […] shared bath (which is similar to a house bathroom), computers, books and magazines, and (3) it is on the site of Harvard and near Harvard Square so you are close to some of the main attractions alone. The only two cons about the place are (1) the room is hot but you can ask for a fan, and (2) the bed is a little firm. Other than that, the hotel is an decent place to stay while visiting Boston. The Irving House was a pleasant surprise. No frills but very comfortable. I found my room and bathroom to be nice, neat, and clean. If you are looking for accomodations located conveniently close to the Boston Metro and off the main roads, the Irving House is wonderful. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the inn itself is located in a safe, walkable neighborhood, and has a homey feel. My room was quite small and only had a twin bed, but I was traveling for work and all my free time was spent exploring Boston, so the room served its purpose as a clean and comfortable place to sleep, while maintaining the charm found throughout the inn. The easiest walk between the Metro and the Irving House is directly through Harvard Yard on the Harvard campus, which added to the appeal of this inn. The breakfast is "continental" in the European sense-- ample and healthy. In fact, the entire experience at Irving House tended towards European accomodations. My sole complaint is the lack of noiseproofing within the house (it appears to be quite old-- I didn't stop to read the house history displayed in the lobby); the housekeeping staff and other guests were audible through the room door and at times through the walls adjoining other rooms.
